[Pompey] Matisse Thybulle: “For me, specifically, I feel like there was a lot more fear-based play in Philadelphia as opposed to what I’m doing here in Portland.”

I mean he had less room for error here bc we aren’t gonna be in the lottery or play-in at best so I guess it makes sense

  2. Thegrandmistressofoz

This feels like the pressure of playing in a team with title hopes vs playing on the 13th seed

I can’t read the full article so I’m not sure what else he goes on to say there, but that makes sense. The Sixers as a team have much more pressure on them than the Blazers, and Matisse would’ve had far more pressure on him here as a player than he would in Portland. There was some expectations for him to take the next step here, whereas in Portland i’m sure they’re just happy for who he is as of now.

  4. >“It’s hard when you are on such a talented team and a team that has so much demand to win now,” Thybulle said. “And for whatever reason, I fell out of favor in the lineup or whatever you want to call it. And I didn’t really feel like there was an opportunity to really showcase it.

    >“Now, it feels like I have all the opportunity in the world. The opportunity is there, and it’s going to continue to be there. I’m only receiving encouragement to take advantage of it.”

It means that because nothing is expected of Portland, he’s free to brick as many 3s as he does, without worry of losing the game

  6. TheAntiCircleJerk

Well yeah, the Sixers are contenders and want to win. Portland seems happy with the play-in because they know Dame is never going to leave.

  7. Specific-Economy-926

I don’t miss him fouling 3 pt shooters and struggling to see how that is fear-based.

  8. This is one of the softest things I’ve ever heard, can’t believe he publicly said this 😂 you’re an adult millionaire in the NBA on a team trying to win a ring.

  9. faithfamilyfootball

I have been saying this about the 6ers for months. They look afraid to fail sometimes and it effects them negatively

You guys underestimate the stats people can put up on crap teams. Doesnt make the player not garbage like Matisse is. See how the Pacers played us the other night.

  11. ProcessTrust856

Yes that’s what happens when your team has expectations.

  12. MumenriderPaulReed69

Cause Portland is content with shit play from their team year after year! We get pissed! Also it hasn’t helped him much

  13. eagles1990

A lot of fear based decision making when it comes to shots for Matisse

  14. BabaBrody

Makes sense. The post-vaccine games and playoffs last year, he looked he was being passed a live grenade on offense. He came out of it and looked less stressed up until the trade deadline his season, maybe because he saw that the expectations had diminished on him and he felt freed up a bit. Hope he thrives with Portland but we need more psychopaths who fire away regardless of the situation.

I like Matisse and hope he does well in Portland, but he seems to lack self-awareness in these comments. While Glenn has his issues, he has given Thybulle opportunities over the years to seize a spot in the rotation, but Matisse hit a plateau and didn’t really earn that everyday run. His shot has always been suspect and his handles/dribble drive didn’t improve one iota after draft day.

  16. SamHinkieKnew

That’s a lot of words to basically say “I now play for a team that doesn’t care if I don’t develop a 3 point shot and I like that.”

  17. Dougary96

Oh come on Matisse we loved you here man. Don’t do this on the way out

I heard this the other day and think it’s great quote. Roughly, “there are two NBAs. One has teams with pressure to win it all (Philly) and one NBA has teams with no pressure (Portland). Think of the process era and how many of those dudes balled out. No pressure. It’s not all about Docs coaching. In certain cities, the lights are always bright. Tisse just wasn’t built for it. Not a bad thing. But don’t knock Philly dude. We were in your corner the entire time.

“As opposed to what in doing here in Portland” man what are you doing in Portland? He had 20 mins/2 pts vs Boston and before that 37 mins/3 pts vs Detroit. Clearly he’s enjoying the lack of pressure. He just wants to jog around the court and make money.

  20. samob679

It’s not mentioned that Thybulle consciously chose not to remain a starter going into the playoffs last year. He had a starting spot, literally walked away from it. He has to accept some responsibility for that, right?

  21. brokenoreo

people gonna take this and run with it. he was obviously fighting for playing time before he left (for good reason) if he didn’t perform then he’s left on the bench. being in pdx is obviously a much better situation for him.

  22. beerrabbit124

Yes Matisse this is what happens when your 4 years in & haven’t shown any development on offense, you will be out the rotation

  23. EnoughUnkownSources1

This sub is going to be insufferable tonight when Matisse ultimately goes 2-4 from 3 and has 2 steals in a -10 effort

  24. RealPrinceJay

He’s probably right. We have higher hopes than Portland, and our fans are more engaged and invested.

  25. von_d_von

I like Matisse but I always feared he had the wrong mindset to play on a team with championship aspirations.

It’s the difference between him and someone like Maxey. Maxey embraces the pressure; he loves it and that allows him to thrive in it.

  26. jappixslackbot

Kind of insulting a little. People that will lose their homes and not be able to take care of their families if they lose their jobs feel “fear” during their performance. Not losing minutes on a basketball court

  27. CHRIRSTIANGREY

true that we have higher playoff hopes than portland…. but its also important to look in the mirror. Us philly fans are one of the more hasher fans out there

  28. justabill71

“I still suck, but I’m not *scared* to suck, now.”

  29. swalsh21

I get what he’s saying… but also he played 19.8, 20.0 and 25.5 mpg in his 3 years. Had plenty of opportunity to improve and didn’t.

  30. MaxeytoEmbiid

Friendship with Tisse has long been over, Jalen McDaniels is our new best friend.

  31. PrettyInPInkDame

I’m glad he’s not afraid anymore to play so mid. Truly an inspiration

  32. cactusmask

I’m a big matisse fan, just thought he was super fun to watch. Next year seems kinda make or break for him. His contract is up, and if he keeps the portland 40% 3 pace, he’ll get a nice contract. If he doesn’t, he’s like almost unplayable and will be trending out of the league.

  33. grilledcheesy11

This fanbase loves doing backflips for non shooting weirdos with unruly egos.

    Have fun in Portland!
