Kawhi just fell to his knees.

Will be reevaluated in 3-6 weeks.

    Thats good.

I do wonder whether it should be a minutes-based rule or games played though. I can see sides for both

  3. JoshGordonHypeTrain

Is this really an issue now? Feel like the votes take this into account anyway.

reporters already did this but it’ll be good to have a standard value. I’m assuming something like 70+ to get an award (would equate to playing in ~ 1 in 6 games)

People still won’t try in the regular season. Someone undeserving to win will get an award and tank the value of the trophy even more.

League needs to be upset with the media for the rings culture instead. Can’t tell everyone for years the regular season doesn’t matter, then regret it when players start believing it too

I think atleast 80% should be the new threshold. So players would have to play atleast 65 games to be awarded.

The Kevon Looney MVP year will be generational

  8. underscoreftw

make it 82 games, so Mikal Bridges can truly become the only player in the NBA

  9. not_new_to_this

How many MVPs have played less than 70 games in a non-shortened season?

Great idea, but not sure this has any real impact, voters already consider games played

What’s the number of games where this would make a difference? Nobody is winning significant awards with 25 missed games anyway.

Edit: I’m kind of wrong here. Kawhi made all-NBA with 30 missed games. So I guess that could be a thing, esp because it effects contracts.

r/nba complaining about the Embiid-Jokic MVP talks finally paying off. Next year’s Bridges-Looney MVP talks gonna be less toxic with only 9 people discussing it.

  12. CarBallAlex

Sounds like a W but the minimum number of games for the scoring title is 58 games. If you prorate the shortened seasons to 82 games, Embiid will have played at least 58 games in the last 6 seasons.

If he’s eligible for awards under the same requirement, this changes nothing except guys who suffer long term injuries or go to the extreme like what Kawhi has done.

Voting for things like MVP or All-NBA already factor in games missed (why guys like Durant or Steph have fallen out of the discussion) so really this changes nothing except drawing a line in the sand that you can’t waste votes on guys who don’t hit the threshold.

This is more of a nothingburger than anything as far as MVP goes, but incentives tied to awards (like making All-NBA) will be interesting on the contractual side of things if there are large non-guaranteed incentives with a raise in the salary cap and how teams will circumvent it to stack teams for an upcoming contender.

It feels like the NBPA would like there to be a maximum of games played not a minimum

Incoming Mikal Bridges MVP, DPOY, 6MOTY, MIP, COTY, EOTY, Sportsmanship Award

  15. Boomhauer_007

Not getting excited until I see the number, wouldn’t be surprised if it’s 60 which is actually above stat leader requirements and still almost a fourth of the season

  16. BillyBean11111

better be a minutes per game stipulation too

  17. waconaty4eva

Means testing to curb behavior never results in the intended consequences. The regular season is broken because of league wide financial decisions that are preventing real improvement.

hmm which players got major awards while missing many games? especially mvp. i can’t think of any right now

and all nba teams already have a set number of games needed to qualify soooo idk. if two players are very elite mvp caliber, the deciding factor shouldn’t be one player 69 games & one player 72 idk idk. we’ll see how it goes but it’s not the iron man award & it’s always been factored in without it being super official

edit- would this also affect the top 10 mvp list or the finalists? like can you only make the list if you play a certain number of games.

  19. i dont think this will change much, like i feel like guys like Kawhi could not give a shit less about player awards and are more focused on saving their bodies for playoffs and more so the title.

what would change things imo if they tie this with player contracts, not sure how they would do that and i know the players would reject it. Cuz guys like Ben Simmons who has a monster contract barely has played

  20. Imnotsmallimfunsized

Sounds great. But I’m sure in classic nba fashion it’ll be a minimum of like 50 games and make no difference. Kinda like fining the players for complaining to the refs. Not only did they not enforce it the fine was hilariously low

  21. gregmango2323

Would’ve expected something like this to be in place already
