I’ve always said fans are over reacting when being scared the Spurs are moving to Austin, and living in Austin I feel it’s not a Spurs city at all BUT I didn’t like this quote at all, especially with new ownership. Austin is booming like crazy and is financially advantageous for businesses compared to San Antonio. Austin will eventually pass San Antonio in population as also could charge more for tickets. If the Spurs don’t get any winning seasons in the next half decade I think it really may happen sooner rather than later. If the Spurs get Wemby or whoever and we start making the playoffs again then I don’t see the Spurs rushing to move to Austin.
The only reason they would move the Spurs to Austin is the same reason they moved Golden State out of Oakland; to appeal to the wealthy.
Na doy. They ain’t going anywhere. If they move a bit further up I35 with any future stadium, it will still be in SA. Packers will never leave Green Bay, Yankees will never leave New York, Spurs will always be in SA.
I’m let’s say about older 40s, born and raised in SA, in Austin for a good bit… my Dad and I watched the Duncan lottery when it was a live ping-pong ball thing. Spurs had the third-worst record, Celtics the worst, and after the Len Bias catastrophe the Celtics were just awaiting Duncan as their savior.
And it used to be a real live thing.
Not this new shit of making four-digit random codes or whatever and they just tell you what happened after.
Naw, this was like a literal live lottery with ping-pong balls, live on TV.
A little more history if you don’t know – if Tim Duncan had entered the draft as a junior out of Wake Forest he would have been the consensus #1 pick like Wemby is now. But his mom was dying suddenly, and on her deathbed she made Tim promise he would finish and get his degree at Wake Forest.
So when Tim Duncan came out of Wake Forest as a senior, he was the #1 pick to end all #1 picks.
And suddenly that day there was an actual ping-pong ball with a Spurs logo on it.
Y’all youngins have to realize the Spurs have always usually been pretty fucking good. Throughout the 80s and 90s we were a team that by far made and excelled in the playoffs, just never could make it over that hump to get to a Championship series.
We lucked into Tim Duncan, and history and five Championships were suddenly written into stone.
No matter how this draft lottery goes, and it really is a shame it’s not a live bingo-style thing anymore, not just our Big Three but PATFO and just Pop have given this city 5 Championships when we were starving for just one for so long.
I have lived it and have full faith in Pop and his office and court decisions forever. I can question specific changes, but anybody thinking they’re better at 4D chess than Pop is clearly full of it. Anybody saying otherwise don’t know shit. How many times did that reddit user’s hot takes bring your city multiple Championships?
It would be sweet if they could play a few games in Austin during the Rodeo. I’d rather have a few Austin games to break up that crazy stretch of road games.
Businesses wise, this is a smart play to get the city to pay for a new arena. Preferably in SA but if the offer is good, I wouldn’t be to surprised if they moved North.
How about we play the annual Rodeo games in Austin? Instead of that many road games in a row our home games would only be a couple hours away.
Michael Dell is a new Spurs investor if I’m not mistaken- it makes sense to play some games in Austin
If Austin and SA collaborated we could probably get an NFL team too. There’s plenty of space east or west of 35 along the route to build something like the cowboys did on the road to Ft worth
Would a new arena just south of New Braunfels really be worse than driving to the East Side?
🤮🤮🤮
Bexar County should get 100% of profits of any of this Austin game business. It’s gross the county is getting hosed while the Spurs get a free market experiment that could justify relocation.
