so now everyone who is a good basketball player deserves a max? i’d say he’s more in the range of a tyler herro type of contract. $40 million per year would be an overpay.
I love Tyrese but he’s not a max money player unless the Sixers really believe he can take another step, especially on the defensive end. Very conflicting.
Don’t know how I feel about this but young talented players don’t grow on trees. It certainly can’t be worse than the Tobias deal

Always was. Tobias’ money is moving out after next season, and Maxey is the only thing long term about this current version of the team. He’s shown growth year over year. Next step is finding ways to hold up defensively and finding ways to get more consistent offensive utilization around Joel and (maybe) Harden.

Wow yeah he isn’t worth that at all. He has tunnel vision and is an awful defender. I think the league just doesn’t like the sixers and are trying to force our hand to overpay.

Doc gave him free reign for months with the bench squad and without Harden to show his chops as the primary guy, but that went pretty poorly. He’s amazing with Harden and Embiid, but his flaws (ie: lack of shot creation, playmaking, defense especially) is going to look a LOT worse when he’s on a max and not way outplaying his rookie deal

This could end up biting us like the Tobias deal in terms of hamstringing the team, unless he takes a significant leap with his flaws (which he obviously could, but he hasn’t shown it yet). Deal would prolong for the post-Harden era too, so he has to be THAT guy

I hope he is ready to deal with the pressure of playing on a Max contract. If he is then I’m fine with it but if he shrinks under the pressure this will be a huge mistake

I’d do it. I think it would be foolish not to invest on such a talented player who’s willing to improve. He has a good attitude and approach to the game so I am confident he will only become better.

He has time. If he takes more leaps and can prove to be a Star in the league, he can have that max. If not, then a Jaylen Brown type contract (inflation adjusted) would be more suited imo. But anyways, IMWT

I love Maxey and all, but let’s be honest here: Is he really worth that kind of money (that could be debated). I’m not saying he’s a horrible player, I’m just saying he could use some improvements to his game before there’s any talks about a max contract extension.

He’s in a unique spot where he probably won’t up his ppg or his efficiency too much until Tobi is replaced since Joel is a ball dominant, hyper efficient scorer, but if he can make more strides in just being a consistent pest defensively and put up more threes (he’s turned himself into a legit borderline excellent shooter). If Maxey were on a mediocre team he’d be scoring 26-27 a game. He also just needs to get over deferring to James and Joel bc he’s so nice lol, even Embiid tells him to put threes up when he gets a chance. Gotta lock him down, home run draft pick at 21.
Absolute worst case a guy his age with his shooting prowess and transition skills is going to be extremely tradable even on a contract like that in a few yrs if you have to. This is nothing like giving Tobias 38-40 mil

Im sorry, I love maxey but he is nowhere close to a max player. A max should be a superstar man, hes one of the worst defensive players in basketball.
Need to trade him for a better fitting piece if we flame out again this year. He’s the only asset we have left to improve the team. That’s a literal fact.
Maxey is good but he’s a fringe 20 ppg player that isn’t good on defense or necessarily a great playmaker.
He should NOT be making more then 25 mil a year on a contending team.
I don’t get this thread, he’s 22 and amazing offensively. He has already gotten better on defense this year and has taken big leaps every year. Plus the cap is going up so $40 million is what a lot of top young players will be getting anyway.
