[Feigen] If a more coveted player is available because he is heading into a contract season, such as Boston’s Jaylen Brown (who could sign an extension, anyway), Stone might prefer to wait one season and to sign him as a free agent, rather than give up the assets necessary to make a deal

I agree with Stone here. I am not a fan of blowing it up for a star player and would rather let our guys develop under Udoka. Rushing a rebuild is the best way to ruin it and end up as a poverty franchise for the next decade

To be clear this is just what Feigen thinks Stone would want to do. He goes on to say Stone insisting he isn’t afraid to trade picks for the right deal

I hope so. We aren’t contending for a while no matter who joins

The other side of that coin is that trading for a player would mean acquiring their Bird Rights. I’ll admit I’m not savvy enough to understand the limits of that exception (and I can’t seem to get any answers from Google as to whether or not we are limited to only using that on one player per team or if we can use them ad nauseum if desired) but, say, trading for OG instead of waiting for him to decline his PO next year would mean we could offer him whatever he wants without it affecting our cap whereas otherwise we are not only competing with every other team for his services, driving up the price, but the money would count against our cap whereas the Bird Rights deal would not.

What team is letting a star walk for nothing? They’ll trade him before that happens…

I agree with the thought process. We don’t *have* to sign a max guy this summer. None of our young guys are due money for 2 years so we’ve got time to wait for the right player to commit to while also seeing how our young guys develop.
