Joe Mazzulla Admits he SHOULD Have Called Timeout at End of Celtics vs Sixers Game 4



Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla spoke to the media on Monday about the timeout in Boston’s Game 4 OT loss to the Sixers.

“We’re more organized than the defense because we know the matchups and we’re attacking them.”

Mazzulla said “Hindsight is 20/20, I should have called (a timeout at end of OT) to help us get a 2-for-1 or get a couple more possessions. Obviously, 14 seconds left, down 1, you want as many chances as you can. So, definitely learn from that.”

The series is now tied as it shifts back to Boston on Tuesday.

    We all are human so when we make a honest mistake we can say so and own it. It’s what leaders do. I love my Celtics win or lose they conduct themselves like professionals. Coach Joe is a leader of men

    He's too young. You call a time out, stop the clock with 15 seconds. You set up a play that only takes 7 seconds, if you miss, you still have time to foul. They hit both and go up 3. You then have another chance to tie the game. If they miss one free throw and you are down by 2, you go for 2. Tatum or Brown from 15 to 17 feet turn around jumper (55%) chance. Go for 3 and you only have a 39% chance. Or just play Pritchard and the game won't even be close. His speed and shooting % will dominate the game.

    This is very odd. Joe must have been called into the principle’s office for his defiant attitude after blowing another late game lead.

    I feel like the Celtics legit loose every close game they r in and have been like that all year. They are great when they r up 10 but never win when it’s close

    Celtics not winning any championship with this coach. Even in the early season when cs were on long win streaks they always look shaky. That playing the clock to the last sec mostly leads to TO or a tough shot but they nevee adjust. It's either smart or tatum just pounding the ball until the last sec. They play not to lose instead of staying aggressive. The no timeouts. Brad stevens tried that and it did not work. Why even have a coach if you won't use timeouts. The defense is lacking too. Mazulla took over and they played at a much faster pace but there defense is not elite anymore. They use to be number 1

    Wow it’s actually surprising when he’s accountable because it happens so rarely… Unfortunately he’s still attempting to escape responsibility by AGAIN repeating “hindsight is 20/20”

    Dude it’s not that hard to admit you’ve made a mistake. I’ve seen toddlers do a better job of holding themselves accountable than Mazzulla..

    So why did he say "No, It was Great Execution" when Washburn ask him about regrets at the end of the game at yesterdays postgame? Joe needs an ego check, he's too stubborn for his own good. Yes he's young, but when you're given the keys to a championship roster, there's no excuses. He can't be the weak link that prevents this team from getting banner 18.

    Its one thing to make mistakes, he's a rookie it happens. But to keep making the same mistake all year and keep losing games that way and not learning is crazy

    As a first year head coach he’s doing a great job. Series ain’t over yet and it took Harden to go off for 2 games. Honestly if JB doesn’t get into foul trouble off iffy calls in the first, I believe we be up 3-1

    Not only did he not call the time out at the end, he always saves he had 2 left at the end of the game before the OT. Unless you think they will come up with better def than you can come up with on offence I don't see the point of not letting them get set. 76er def is going to be the same timeout or not. Also you get chance to put in Rob or shooter. This is the second loss where the end is Tatum driving and trying to get ball to Smart happened in the first game. After Brogden toss got picked off and they score, the next possession Tatum is driving trys to pass to Smart and it goes out of bounds. Unless Rob is down under hoop or Horford I dont see a set 76ers letting Tatum get anywhere near the hoop. When he can its in transition and he has speed.

    Mazulla did not call time out bcoz he trust his players its 50/50 call even if he call time out and lose then what he got the blame and if boston won that game 4 they would praise him as coach of the year thats f….k up

    It's like having a Lamborghini being driven by someone who just passed their road test! The only way the Celtics don't get back to the finals is if this rookie coach, who nobody ever heard of screws up this team! The Celtics have the talent to win it all right now!

    Admitting the problem is step one. Next time call the damn time out. This is not the first or second time this season. Oh and when your up two on the second to last possession remind your guys to not to foul or give up a 3. Totally could have walked away with a win last night and shortened their path to the finals. But they failed to execute simple things.

    That decision has cost a game or forced overtime.

    You can trust players to make a decision without you and still coach. At least give them the opportunity to huddle and strategize amongst eachother on best approach.

    You can't watch your team burn all of 18 seconds in a playoff game and not call a timeout at any point.

    You cant put all the pressure on Marcus to hit game winners. You pay the superstars to close. Let them learn to close tight games.
