Some Quentin Grimes Playoffs Stats

I believe Grimes has superstar potential. He is already one of the best perimeter defenders in the league. If not THE best perimeter defender in the league.

In 8 games playing against Donovan Mitchell and Jimmy Butler when matched up in the playoffs (roughly 205 possessions) he held them to:

11/37 shooting from the field

1/9 from 3

32 TOTAL POINTS (This counts times he fouled them and they went to the line, not sure if it counts fouls by a help defender)

These are just surface level stats. I’m sure someone more knowledgeable can extrapolate more from this data than I can.
If you didn’t know you can look up individual matchup stats here: https://www.nba.com/player/1629656/quentin-grimes/

You can do this for any player and any match-up. I’d love to see Grimes stats against the top X amount of players in iso or something over the course of the entire season but I’m on my break right now.
All that being said, PLEASE KEEP DEVELOPING GRIMES HE WILL BE A TOP SG IN THE LEAGUE ONE DAY.
I trust whatever this front office does in the offseason and I want Thibs to stick around for another half decade.

  1. He passes the eye test. All I really need to know

  2. Chr1s78987x

He’s really good. He did shit the bed on offense but looked way more promising toward the end of that series. I think next season he’ll look way better in the playoffs because he’ll know what to expect.

Same goes for IQ and all the young guys.

  3. TreSeven

I’m 99% sure his shoulder injury was affecting his shot, we desperately needed his spacing throughout the playoffs. If he can keep up this defense and get his three ball back, he’s gonna be a super valuable piece to have

  4. tconner87

I’m gonna be so sad if him or quickley got dealt for some mid level star

  5. TheoryOfSilence_

Him hurting his leg and still playing defense made me a huge fan of him. Look forward to his career.

    Q gon be aight

Had some jitters he was working through + the shoulder injury. He’s gonna be a big part of our future, IMO he just needs to focus on slowing the game down for him.

IMO Grimes has the most potential to break out and be a really solid piece of a championship team. He needs to be more aggressive with his offense. He literally touches the ball for a second and immediately looks to move the ball. He needs to be a little more ball hoggish if he’s going to help this team. Him hitting shots will open the floor for everyone else

“superstar potential” might be a bit much.

“star” or “all-star potential” is still pretty great and way more realistic.

i don’t love when we overhype our guys, because it might end up in disappointment even when someone is having a solid career.

Based on [matchup stats](https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1629656/head-to-head) Jimmy Butler shot 30.8% when guarded by Grimes and Mitchell shot 27.3% when guarded by Grimes.

Boy is going to be a all-defensive player in a couple of years. Hopefully Thibs trusts him on an island next season, he can hold his own.

I love Grimes, but you’re being a homer and kidding yourself saying he has “superstar” potential. Maybe we have different definitions of superstars, but when I think of that word I think of guys like Luka, Steph, Lillard, Booker, etc. He’s nowhere near any of that.

  11. nofapbbby

I also think Grimes has superstar potential glad to see other Grimes fans in here.

He absolutely dominated the rising stars game and looks like a superstar around average players his own age. If his team won, he would’ve gotten MVP easily that night.

Him and Randle are low key a great duo.

  12. slickrickiii

He has a real chance to be the next Klay Thompson. They have the same frame and play style. A guy like that changes a whole team

  13. AutisticFingerBang

Superstar potential. Dude. If the kid was on his way to super stardom you’d know by now. That’s not a shot at him and I absolutely believe he’s a solid as player and can be a really really good player. He does not have superstar potential. SUPERSTAR, like top 10 in the league. Absolutely wild take.

  14. A lot of folks say he shit the bed offensively – it could also stand to reason he was putting so much effort and energy into defending the opponents best player his offense suffered for it. He had a lot of open looks from 3 and missed or passed out of a make-able drive quite a few times.

With time and work in the off-season he should be able to learn when and how to get his offense from and maintain his energy.

Super excited to see his progress man, this young team giving me a lot of hope

  15. knick4life

QDot’s the closest to untouchable among the young guys imo because he fits with any roster you construct, has a hard to find skill set of pure shooting form with elite athleticism, and you probably wouldn’t get equivalent value back. His effort and unselfishness make him an ideal complementary player.

I’m expecting a leap as the game slows down for him. He has the potential to be a bigger part of our offense than just a floor spacer. Hopefully he can get featured more next year.

  16. MJisthrgoat

He was there for defense and I think he did well against Jimmy to the point thibs calling to double jimmy literally every time is what opened the three for the heat.

  17. Green__Bananas

“Superstar” is a bit much lol, but hopefully these playoffs accelerated his development.

  18. Odysseus_Lannister

I legitimately don’t get the hype for QG over Quickley. They’re both about the same % from 3 but quick has the ability to run an offense and get his own shot. Quick is also a better perimeter defender although he’s undersized when compared to QG so he often can’t stick with the Butler’s/Tatums/etc.

I like them both, but I don’t think QG is a guaranteed star in this league like some of y’all are anticipating where I’m seeing klay Thompson comparisons lol.

  19. Rj barrett has shown the most potential out of all the young guys and it’s surface level star potential at best. I think grimes can be a more skilled Danny Green based on what he’s shown so far. He’ll be very valuable on a winning team.

  20. Zealousideal-Cod2089

I stopped reading at superstar potential

  21. 00pegasus5g

He’s the high-level 3-and-D player that EVERY playoff needs. The Knicks have all the ancillary pieces to be good for a while — we just need our star players to not be terrible in must-win games.

  22. ObscurelyTalented

Superstar potential doesnt need playoff experience to show up. They just do it on the first game of the playoffs.

  23. Type_suspect

Im afraid he might just be another 3 and D Courtney lee. Has all the offensive abilities but too scared to use them. he passed up way too many shots against the heat and missed but 2nd year player first playoffs so not the end of the world.

  24. The Knicks have killed the optimist inside me but I do love his quick thinking with the ball. We’ve had too many guys with ball hogging tendencies that smooth passers like Grimes and Obi feel refreshing. Obi could use a little slowing down though, he gets too caught up in relinquishing the basketball sometimes.
