This youtuber produces very high-quality video essays on random NBA content (typically current events) with a lot of data and stats. This video is on our boy Victor, with a lot of random praises for Spurs and Tim. What are your thoughts on his message?

Main takeaways:
1. #1 picks don’t usually pan out as generational talents unless they are LeBron or Tim.
2. Most rookies don’t elevate their teams that much.
It took 13 minutes to get there, but he got there.
We should really temper our expectations, and also stop rubbing it in other teams’ faces. It’s unbecoming of Spurs fans to act as entitled as I’ve seen in some recent threads. Just support the kid and hope for the best.
Excellent video, however I feel like talking about all the hype surrounding Victor is just low hanging fruit at this point for content creators.
I wish somebody would focus instead of actual predictions of how well Wemby will do his rookie season, free agent targets, future trades, team strategy etc. Instead all I hear mostly is, “you guys, this is too much hype to put on this 19 yr old kid!” Which is undoubtedly true, but how many times do we have to hear it?
The way the media is hyping him up, you’d think the kid is going to start winning championship in his rookie season.
I’d say I wonder if these guys even watch the kid play, but we all know that most of these journalists and analysts have only ever watched Lakers games. lol
Anyway, I’m glad the kid has Pop to keep him grounded. He’s going to need to. Wemby isn’t NBA ready. It’s going to take a few years for him to figure things out, especially on offense. If the media isn’t going to give him that time, his head coach has to.
Wemby came to the best possible place to realize his potential (barring catastrophic injury). And it will take some time. 3 – 4 years.
The video title is a touch on the click-baity side. Could be more accurately titled, “The Harsh Truth About #1 Overall Picks” as it’s a sobering retrospective on the history of those picks and how rarely they pan out.
Wemby is basically Ralph Sampson, so I’m just hoping he is going to last a heck of a lot longer than his predecessor.
As long as Wemby stays healthy, his floor is amazing, and he seems to be taking the KD route, but with more defense. If it all comes together, that’s a potential recipe for a GOAT baller. Fingers crossed, its all in the hands of the Spurs (thankfully).
I used to like his videos, particularly when he went into the archives to put the spotlight on the less well known parts of basketball history. However as he’s gotten popular, it’s become more about clickbait and increasingly using the most basic and superficial stats to support his arguments. They often read like a 13yo’s essay.
It’s cool that he’s framed the context of how many number 1 picks have been unsuccessful. And I know the point is to temper expectations.
I don’t think he really says this, but it felt implied that the pressure of expectations either can cause the players to crumble. Or in some cases to just leave to and get a ring. I’d like to think the Spurs would be good at managing this side of it.
But most of those franchises were poverty franchises. I’m not saying Wemby is going to pan out. But everything that I’ve seen of him says that he wants to be the best and is very competitive and wants to get better. Match that with the Spurs organization and you have a winning formula. I really only see injuries being an issue.
