The ‘New Look’ Wembanyama Is EXACTLY What The NBA Feared
As Gordon Gund famously said twenty years ago, “You know, we don’t know who we’re gonna pick yet.” But for the San Antonio Spurs, they struck gold with the first pick, and they’re going to be selecting none other than the highly-touted Victor Wembanyama. This pick has the potential to completely alter the trajectory of their franchise. So, let’s dive into the details and what it means for the Spurs and the rest of the league.
But before we dive into all the details, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane. Remember back in 2003 when the draft lottery didn’t go exactly as planned? Oh boy, the reactions were priceless. Caron Butler couldn’t hide his disappointment when the Miami Heat landed the fifth pick instead of a higher one.

I'm so glad Victor Wembanyama went to the Spurs, with him being the most hyped draft prospect ever it's so perfect that he went to the one team that doesn't care about outside noise and he can just focus on basketball. Super underrated franchise.
Devin Vassell put up nearly 20 ppg on elite shooting percentages.. i think with Wemby hell make the all star leap. Just needs to get to the stripe more and he'll do some damage. A burdgeoning 2 way player.
You forgot David Robinson too he was the first pick and won with the spurs as well
We always hear talk about the Spurs culture and how Tim Duncan shaped it. That's not 100% correct. It started with David Robinson and Pop. His demeanor and attitude fit perfectly, not only with the Spurs, but the city of San Antonio. Same with Pop.
Tim coming in, defined the culture as it was set by Pop and Robinson.
I dont think Victor would fit, personally. But I hope time proves me wrong. It's one thing to be a fan of something, it's an entirely different thing to be a part of it. I hope Wemby is prepared to be yelled at, like TD and DR before him.
All in all, Go Spurs Go. I'm excited for this next chapter, however it goes, because I just want to witness the honking downtown again. Ive missed it.
aint this hoop reports?
Lost all credibility for this video at 4:17. How in thee hell is San Antonio a basketball MECCA???? In what parallel universe? 🤣
You forgot Hakeem Olajuwon dude. He was drafted on the 1st overall pick in 1984.
As a Spurs fan, I literally can’t wait to see him.
People keep talking about us hitting the jackpot. Bro, we weren’t even in the lottery FOR 22 YEARS
Forgot about David Robinson
Spurs know how developed guys into stars now they have this kid bruh. This is just beyond
Trey, Keldon, Vassell, Jeremy yea spurs will be a young dangerous team as time goes
I think the spurs stated that they are going to wait and see how this season goes before them acquiring talent with their future picks
i think Wemby is Wilt Chamberlain reborn.
Thank you so much for giving credit to Pop 💯 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 everyone wants him to retire… idc how old he is… he’s a phenomenal coach and an even better man on and off the court. Results speak for themselves. Were where we’re at largely due to his efforts and methods. If he leaves, we’re no longer the same.
Besides… look at what’s been happening with other coaches in organizations all around the league within the last few years… they’re all flaking, getting canned, or just given up on. Championships take time and.. to some extent… marginal luck.
They don’t happen every year. If you keep changing things up, you won’t get there consistently. But keep the faith while things grow… you’ll see dividends. Thank God the Spurs organization truly understand and value Pop and his longevity. Very smart people. We’re very blessed with that man.
The Spurs did things about as smart as possible after the Demar/Aldridge/Dejounte flop seasons. They did great in recent drafts despite the Samanic (who I am still a fan of) and Primo (who I am not a fan of) whiffs/unpredictable freak behavior.
Devin Vassell – sharpshooter who learned a lot from Demar and it’s so evident in the way he plays. Easily a 20ppg scorer (if not 25ppg) when healthy. Good defender.
Keldon Johnson – Best as a 2nd or 3rd option where his 3pt efficiency is at its best, and his constant attacking opens things up for his shooter teammates. An exhausted defense having to deal with Vassell, Wemby and Sochan constantly attacking the hoop is gonna HATE when Keldon shows that he has the best motor of them all lol
Jeremy Sochan – He is Ben Simmons that loves basketball. Draymond Green-ish. Kind of a mystery what his actual ceiling is, but his offense was remarkably multi-faceted for a limited-ranged rookie – he has the muscle memory and the fundamentals to really become the perfect Robin to Wemby’s GOD
Then Malaki Branham comes in with his random games where he doesn’t miss, and more consistency that we can expect from his 2nd season. He’s another young guy that just seems perfect around Wemby. Lightning quick jumpshot and the type of player where his teammates know to give him his heat checks. Such a fun player.
Long story longer, Zach Collins has returned to form and kinda picked up where Poeltl left off in some ways, despite being more offense to Poeltl’s more defensive style. And he can hit freethrow and 3s! Julian Champpagnie was an absolute monster to end the season. I get that it was the final 15 games on a tanking team, but he hit over 40% from 3 and was scoring more and more as his confidence grew game by game. Sandro Mamukaleshvili had a LOT of great moments as a modernized Boris Diaw-type player. High passing IQ and quick decision maker, Quick on his feet.
So much to like about this Spurs team, and anyone who watched their rare healthy teams knew all they needed was, well, a Wemby!
You can also add David Robinson to the list of #1 picks as he won the title with the Spurs in '99 and' 03 with Timmy.
Spurs fans are so damn lucky with this. Lakers fan here. Victor is going to BALL OUT. I wish him the best with his health and am excited to see him and then eventually see him as a TD / DR type rival. I bet Victor is gonna spend a bunch of time training with Timmy. I'm excited to see this team now.
The celebration around Wembanyama is way too early.
Just saying.
