[Heavy] Hawks ‘Want to Bring in’ Nets Starter, Could Offer Beleaguered Star

>There will be some changes made to the Brooklyn Nets roster.
>
>Just how many remains anyone’s guess but several veterans figure to be dangled on the trade block this summer, and one, Dorian Finney-Smith could have a ready-made suitor in the Atlanta Hawks, a rival general manager tells Heavy Sports NBA insider Sean Deveney.
>
>“There is still a lot of speculation that Atlanta could bring back a John Collins offer for the Nets,” the GM told Heavy Sports. “And DFS is a guy they want to bring in.”
>
>**Nets get:**
>
>– John Collins
>
>**Hawks get:**
>
>– Dorian Finney-Smith
>
>– Royce O’Neale
>
>– 2027 1st Rd Pick (Top-8 protected, via PHI)
>
>Finney-Smith, 30, came over from the Dallas Mavericks in the Kyrie Irving trade along with starting point guard Spencer Dinwiddie and a 2029 first-round pick
>
>The veteran averaged 7.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists across 26 appearances – all starts – for the Nets. His three-point efficiency abandoned him (30.6%) but he is a career 35.7% shooter from deep and knocked down 41.2% of his threes in the Nets’ sweep at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs.
>
>More than anything, though, he continued to provide two-way versatility.
>
>**Dorian Finney-Smith Is ‘One of the Better 3-and-D Guys’**
>
>“You could see in Dallas, when they were without Finney-Smith, that defense collapsed,” the GM said. “He is one of the better 3-and-D guys out there. There is a market for him, more than for everyone else they might think about trading.”
>
>According to the general manager, the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers are two other teams who could show interest in Finney-Smith as he heads into the second year of a four-year, $55.6 million contract. He has acknowledged that he could very well be one of the players who gets moved this offseason.
>
>Brooklyn will likely be looking to avoid the luxury tax next season.
>
>Brooklyn rejected several offers for Finney-Smith — including some with multiple first-rounders — at the deadline.
>
>O’Neale, 29, averaged 8.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists and shot 38.9% from three. He is heading into the final year of a four-year, $36 million deal. The deal above would have to wait until July 10 when O’Neale’s contract becomes fully guaranteed for the $9.5 million he is owed instead of the $2.5 million it would currently count for in a trade.
>
>“The Nets are looking for plug-and-play players here,” the exec said, “Not…picks or cap relief.”
>
>This is an important distinction because the Nets effectively can not tank since they do not have control of their first-round draft picks. That means they must retool this roster while ensuring they remain competitive until their debts are paid off.
>
>For Atlanta, this trade helps them surround Trae Young with more perimeter defenders and space the floor for Dejounte Murray drives.
>
>**Nets ‘Still Curious’ About John Collins, Says Exec**
>
>“The Nets like Collins, they had interest there even before they blew up the team,” another executive told Deveney in a previous report from early May. “They’re still curious.”
>
>Collins, 25, may seem like damaged goods after he averaged 13.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists during the regular season, all of which were his lowest marks since his rookie year. But The Nets would be getting a player who is not quite in his prime and has a 20-point, 10-rebound season under his belt.
>
>If his three-point efficiency (29.2% 3P in 2022-23) gets back to where it was then (40.1%), the Nets would be ecstatic.
>
>Hawks general manager Landry Fields still speaks highly of Collins.
>
>But the Hawks let Collins test free agency before signing him to that contract and his name has been floated around in every transaction cycle since.
>
>The high-flying big man is heading into the third year of a five-year, $125 million pact with a $26.5 million player option for the 2025-26 season, a deal that has complicated his long-rumored departure from Atlanta.
>
>Losing Finney-Smith – whom Mikal Bridges is fond of – and O’Neale would hurt the Nets’ defense but both players were brought in as appeasements for Kevin Durant who asked for and got a trade to the Phoenix Suns anyway. The Nets would be wise to extract as much value from the plethora of wings as they can while accounting for Cameron Johnson financially.

After the season John Collins has had, Nets still have to give up the first rounder? I get it if it was based on 2020-21 season where he was coming off two seasons of shooting 40% from three, but this past season he really cratered down to under 30%. That plus shoddy defense and I’m not sure what the appeal is for the Nets to make that trade.

Stupid deal imo. Clax should be our 4 Collins is a little small to play 5. We need to focus on actual centers and a PG. I’m fine drafting and developing.

This would be awful from Marks. Royce and a first is closer to a deal for Collins than DFS (two years at a good number), Royce and a first. I’d be calling for Marks to get fired if he deals all that for Collins who hasn’t shown he can be a winning player. Trade two good defenders who can shoot for a guy in Collins that might not be good at defense or shooting? Also a first. Makes sense.

    Rumor after rumor after rumor

Bad trade but at least there’s a lot of activity. Marks better close the GOOD deals

  5. tragedy_of_97

Collins isn’t worth a first, especially considering DFS probably yields a late first himself

  6. Historical-Mud-1218

That seems like a huge overpay for Collins, who is coming off a horrible season.

I get the salary match as Collins is 20 mil plus but us adding the pick is too much. The pair of starting caliber Nets and the Hawks adding a 1st seems much more equitable.

Not sure I like Collins anyway. Royce, DFS and a pick for KAT

  7. 2 good wing defenders and a first round pick for John Collins outrageous contract, putting up 13 points a game. Why don’t we give them Simmons straight up instead, since we are talking about “has been”.

  8. Swaggyjg

I’ll always collins for joe Harris and a second round pick lo, royce DFS and a first? GTFO

  9. TheMoorNextDoor

If Marks did this I would personally call for him to be fired

  10. pm_me_arse_pix

I’d rather just try and flip those two for some late firsts/ protected picks rather than take on bum ass Collins contract and give up a first

    This article is insanely awful

  11. GiantTacoSalad

This ain’t happening. Collins (with his bum hand) is not worth one of those guys plus the pick, let alone both. I could understand trading one of them straight up if there was literally nothing else available.

  12. wrongshape

that has to be a hawks leak. DFS warrants collins + draft stock. not the other way around.

  13. Grendel_82

With all the wings on our team, we going to be in so many trade rumors this off season. It will get a bit annoying, but it is understandable. Nets litteraly have more wings than they can find time on the court for in a game. And there are playoff teams out there that can’t even get five playoff level guys on the court, like their roster only really goes four deep.

  14. twindarkness

kinda want off season to start already so these terrible trade reports stop.

  15. KingofthisShit

LMAO, two 3&D wings locked on good deals and a valuable first for a third non-shooter who has been getting worst year by year playing next to two great playmakers. Anything more than Harris + Royce for Collins straight up is an overpay.

  16. blackmetronome

John Collins was ass this season. Whoever wrote this is trolling

  17. grahamzj

You could add a 1st round pick from Atlanta and remove it from BK to make this more fair and still not sure we should do that

  18. just_so_irrelevant

MASSIVE L PLEASE DON’T DO THIS. COLLINS IS A BUM

  19. LemTen13

I’d only want Collins if I know he’d be coming in working hard as shit on his 3 point shot. He’s unplayable with Simmons and Claxton otherwise.

  20. tredub727

LMAOOO which hawks fan started this “rumor”

  21. Nets need to somehow steal Mitchell Robinson from the Knicks. John Collins is not the front court solution.

  22. gside876

I feel like ppl have made it their jobs as of late to keep making up crappy potential trades for the Nets that would make our team worse. This trade is awful

  23. IcebergSlim47

What need does Collins fill for us? He is not a player that’s elite at any skill besides maybe catching lobs

  24. LinuxUbuntuOS

Yeah I’m not giving up two good wings for a shitty contract
