I don’t know if it changed but the economics of NBA stadiums basically used to be that if you had your luxury boxes mostly sold you were already making a profit for the night even if you didn’t sell a single other ticket. Those boxes also come with 4 figure minimums that must be spent every game on food and booze at like bottle service pricing. It’s part of why teams can afford to be awful and have super low attendance for a decade plus while still having their business grow in value at like 3-4x the rate of most other businesses.
After the Nationals stadium was built Abe bitched about how he never got public money for the arena(different economy/political environment at the time he built the arena made it a non-starter). So the city gave him $50M which he used to upgrade the scoreboard and to renovate the luxury boxes, which were doubled in price accordingly.
