Good pickups
What if they're developing Dariq Whitehead to be a PG? Just a thought
It was a steal to draft Jalen Wilson with the 51st pick.
By not making any trades before or during last night's draft suggest stability and continuity are some of the goals going into next season. Clowney and Whitehead are teenagers and will definitely spent some time with the Long Island Nets. Jalen Wilson will, probably, be a "day one" contributor.
So far so good. JV's coaching staff are in place. It's to early to give a grade to our draft prospects. I like their potential. They'll be coming into a stable environment which will make their transition to NBA smoother.
If we "ran it back," the starting lineup will be Dinwiddie, Bridges, Claxton, DFS, and Cam J. Players under contract, coming off the bench, are Ben, DDJ, O'Neale, Thomas, Mills, Sharpe, and Harris. Harris and Mills will, probably, be moved early next season. Our two way players are RaiQuan Gray and Dru Smith. Our draft picks are Noah Clowney, Dariq Whitehead, and Jalen Wilson. I hope we don't trade DFS and/or Royce O'Neale. They're reliable blue collar players that's important to building the Nets culture. Hopefully, RaiQuan Gray is given a standard contract next season. He's put in the work and he could back up DFS. Since we didn't trade for or draft a backup point guard suggest that we have confidence that Ben will return and be a significant contributor. What's worthy of notice is that JV have confidence in Dinwiddie and regardless of noise made by his detractors, he'll be running JV's offense next season.
After sleeping on this draft for a moment, I have to say I’m not disappointed in this draft completely, but it was definitely underwhelming to say the least because I think Mark’s missed opportunities to make this an amazing draft due to what I consider miscalculations.
The rumors were clear that the nets were trying to move up, but where Mark’s miscalculated was he overvalued home much Royce and DFS were worth for moving up in this draft. And honestly, that’s kind a classic marks he seems to come up late on taking advantage of the full value of a player which would’ve been trading those guys last deadline for more picks in this draft meaning he could’ve flipped Royce and DFS at the deadline and be in a better position in this draft to take many of the players that just fell out of their range.
So that’s the main point, but then Marks had an opportunity to make up for all of that by making sure that he got a lottery talent in cam Whitmore, and all they had to do was trade up one or two spots, and was unable to accomplish even that task, so he overvalued The value of a player like DFS, and then missed an opportunity to have a lottery talent fall into his lap. So just for that I give marks an F not the players, but definitely Marks an F for being out maneuvered.
Now to the players, Noah Clowney might have potential to play next to Claxton, and if that is their plan, I like it, but if their plan is to simply develop him as another center prospect to replace Claxton, I don’t like it and I think it’s a terrible use of a pick.
However, short term, I don’t think Clowney fixes their rebounding size issues in the paint and I could see them having a lot of the same problems unless their plan again is to play both Claxton and Clowney together that’s the key for me. If they see Clowney, as just a back up center to Claxton to eventually replace I hate it but if they see him as a stretch 4who is switchable in the front court with Clax defensibly, I’m all game.
As for Dariq, if he’s actually healthy it’s a great selection if he’s healthy however, I kinda look at him as a poor man’s cam, Whitmore and when cam Whitmores taken one selection before for me, I’m kinda always going to connect those two players in my head. Also, if they see him as a future big point guard that they’re going to develop, then that ups the value in my book, but if they just see him as another three and D wing again it lowers my expectation for this pick.
