The organization clearly believes in D-White and what can provide to the team. But will he be ready to fully embrace that role?
I was listening to the dunker spot podcast and they brought up a good point in the difference between white and smart offensively. Smart might have not been as great of a shooter as white but he was never afraid to take any shots there given to him (maybe to a fault lol). It forced defenses to at least respect him. We know Derrick white has had issues with being hesitant with taking shots at times. But I think he is ready to take a bigger slice of the pie.

Pretty clear that he is ready this past season and post season.
He is not hesitating at all shooting or driving. He is the reason why the Smart move makes sense, he is really damn good.
Derrick White started 70 games, played 82, and was on the floor for 2319 minutes this season. He attempted a career high number of 3 point shots and made .381 percent of them for a career high 1017 points. I am not saying that will continue, obviously, but how much more ready can you get?
I think one of the (probably?) unintended benefits of this trade is that Smart was always willing to have the ball in a big moment, for better and for worse. Even Tatum and Brown would, not exactly defer to him, but when they got tight would lean on him perhaps a bit more than his skill set called for.
How many games this postseason did the ball end up in Marcus’ hands in the waning seconds of the game? While that’s not the worst option, I don’t think it’s the best either.
Derrick had a tendency to defer to Smart, again for better or worse. When he’s aggressive we are a much better team. Hopefully with his bigger role we’ll see that aggressiveness more often.
Man I remember some Cs fan were not a fan of his the first season he was with the Celtics. Dudes made a huge difference and I believe he’s built for this
Ready for what? He’s already better than Smart.
#Let him roam and he will roam.
I think he is. Derrick White has been improving each season he has been with us.
Look at how far he’s come: he was very timid to drive when we first got him in the trade, now he’s aggressively driving to the basket. He roamed at the end of Game 6 against the Heat and carried us for 10 or 11 consecutive points in that third quarter in Game 7 when no one else could do a thing. He’s got what it takes.
After this season, I have no doubt in my mind that he’s ready.
You don’t have a forehead like that if you aren’t ready for primetime
Pretty surprising how people are deeming this postseason a success for White. He had a pretty big stretch in the middle of lousy basketball. If it weren’t for Smart bailing the whole team out, everyone’s heads would be rolling from the Philly series.
the buffalo is ready to roam
