[Popper] Knicks will not exercise option on Derrick Rose’s contract. Rose was beloved by Thibs and the organization, had a diminished role on the court but was a pro throughout his benching, a voice in the locker room, and this will give him a chance to explore available opportunities.

Knicks columnist Steve Popper [tweets](https://twitter.com/StevePopper/status/1672645427559112704?t=hsLpklqzGuyPY2f_VMdhvw&s=19) that Derrick Rose has been let go by the New York Knicks.

Rose, the veteran guard, is now a free agent and can pursue available opportunities next week in free agency. (He can also technically re-sign with the Knicks on a veteran’s minimum deal, if the Knicks would offer it).

DRose was the reason I started watching basketball. That 2009 Celtics Bulls series is still the greatest series i’ve ever seen. Hope he joins a contender and wins a ring before he calls it quits

That’s kind of interesting to me.

I had thought that this would have been a good year for the Knicks to package expirings + draft assets for a star level player. DRose + Fournier + Obi Toppin, all expiring contracts, could match for pretty much anyone in the NBA. Add that to their collection of draft assets, idk, just felt like something could have been done.

Guess no one was really available for them to do that though. They aren’t bringing Porzingis back, Beal was in control of his trade, sounds like maybe they tried with PG13, Dame + Brunson don’t quite make sense, Siakam is apparently only going to re-sign with the Raps, and the Bulls sound like they are wanting someone to overpay for Lavine.

  3. Is he getting another contract? And if he does, is he even going to be a regular rotation player?

Unfortunately he seems completely cooked at this point, and he’s 35 in October.

15 years for rose is an accomplishment in itself. The fact he was still a solid player before this year is wild considering the injuries

  5. Maybe Memphis would be a great fit? Start the first 25 games whilst Ja is suspended, then backup and mentor Ja for the rest of the season?

  6. DRose taking his talents to Atletico Madrid to link up with his BFF Antoine

Definitely worth a punt for a contender. He may not actually be washed, we’re just very deep at the guard position and don’t really need him

  8. action_nick

He legit was a really great presence for the Knicks. I think is the perfect vet to add to a young team if he still wants to be in the league.

  9. SnooMarzipans5767

I forgot he was still in the league

  10. Batmans-penis

Would love him as the Vet in the Pistons locker room.

Our success the last few years has directly correlated with the addition of Derrick Rose.

I love that man.. that man is nice!

I’d love to see him in Denver. If he still has any juice left getting to the rim he could replace *that one aspect* of Bruce’s game

  13. While I do think he’s washed up, there are plenty of contenders who might want a body for the veteran minimum: Miami, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, or Phoenix

Should sign a vet minimum with the Mavericks as a third ball handler, ball out for like 2 games, and then retire comfortably

The Kemba Walker special (though I don’t think Kemba officially retired yet lol)

I think he would have played more on another team, once thibs finds something he just sticks to it. Rose plays with so much control now too, I think the value could be really good on a min

  16. Kaizaman

He should see a chance with a team like the Sun’s. They need depth and he’s not completely cooked, the Knicks just have too many guards already

  17. Hawks need some vet presence, I hope we go after him.

  18. ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

He should go back to Chicago.

He deserves to retire in the place where he cemented his legacy.

I don’t understand people talking about which team he help on the court next season. Rose is washed, when Tom Thibodeau stopped rolling him out there you knew he was really done. He could be a great presence on the bench but he definitely looks like he’s done being impactful on the court

  20. ChancyPants95

I would love another veteran voice in the locker room down here but we can’t get fucking anyone in free agency to come down.

  21. nxhmabin

This seems to be a running joke at this point but he should try his hand with the Clippers depending on if they keep Russ

  22. ObviousAnswerGuy

People sleep on Rose. He didnt play this year, but that’s really cuz Thibs doesnt give a ton of bench minutes and he was redundant with Quickley.

Rose was one of the reasons we made the 4th seed 2 years ago. He can easily still contribute off the bench to a competitive team, and he’s a great veteran presence.

  23. Vivid-Age-3174

Rose deserves an injury-free retirement party with all the champagne he missed out on.

Dude’s earned the right to determine his own destiny but if we’re not re-signing him as a vet mentor I would’ve at LEAST like to have used his contract to facilitate a trade and then have whichever team he ends up on waive him or buy him out

  25. I’m fairly sure he can have Pippen’s vacated job with the Bulls (team ambassador and senior advisor to Michael Reinsdorf) any time he officially retires. It’s an easy gig if he wants it.
