Grant williams rejected an extension for pretty much same money

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10082265

Can someone explain to me how the Celtics offered almost the same deal to Grant that the one he signed and then decided it was too rich and instead got 2 second rounders??

Or why Grant went from rejecting 50 to accepting 54 from the Mavs who are light years away from competing like the celtics??

Because they offered him that contract under the old CBA, with a different roster construction.

Grant’s extension was offered last year, I think the rumor was he wanted $15-$20m and he bet he would have a good season. A combo of an average-ish year with a lot of DNP’s and the new cap structure hurt his market value

  3. mf_science

$4 million dollars is a lot of money and the mavericks aren’t light years away

  4. yourlilpissboi

Why aren’t apples and oranges the same?

  5. nibbinoo8

he’ll play more on the mavs in addition to what others are saying

  6. InAingeWeTrust

Mavs aren’t light years away from competing lol

    Luka – Hardy

    Kyrie – Seth

    Green – THJ

    Grant – Kleber – OMax

    Holmes – Lively – Powell

That’s a pretty good team and I think their biggest need is a POA defender and probably an upgrade at center because Lively might be a year or two away. Don’t forget they made the WCF a season ago.

When you’re a star in their 30s, you’re chasing that ring to cement your legacy. When you’re a role player in your 20s, you’re trying to show you belong and are worth an even bigger contract next time. Grant got more money as well as likely a bigger role. Being on a competing team would be nice but is likely farther down his list for now

Grant will probably have a larger role on the Mavs which may have been more important than money to him.

He has a chance to start for the Mavs. A little buried here.

    1. Old cba, and betting on himself mostly.

    2. Already having KP, and 40 million reasons because of the new cba (as the media says) that grant helped drafted.

  11. aceking555

Grant also mentioned in an interview that it’s a bigger difference because Texas has no state income tax.

Grant’s betting on him self so he’s going to try and show he’s worth big money next contract. To do that he needs minutes to show he’s worth it, he wasn’t going to get that time here. Good luck to him.

  13. He was rumored to be asking for as much as 20M a year prior to the season under the old CBA, that’s why he rejected our 50M/4 year offer.

New CBA was signed adding significant penalties for high spenders, so 54M was probably the best offer he could get in free agency.

The Celtics decided not to keep him because they don’t want to spend that much (and end up in the high spender penalty) on a role player who the coach has decided doesn’t fit in with whatever the scheme is. So because he was an RFA, and Dallas couldn’t outright sign him, we worked a sign and trade and got the picks.

I also think he felt a little disrespected (I hate the term but best I can come up with) when he fell out of the rotation without much by way of explanation.

  15. Significant-Rip-9776

They offered 4/48 but I don’t think that was all guaranteed. I think it had a lot to do with the structure of the contract. But good for him waiting, now he gets away from Joe

  16. kpopvapefiend

He will get more minutes in Dallas and he fits in there better. Playing with Luka and Kyrie will be perfect for him. All he will have to do is spot up for 3 and play defense.

I am just glad someone of the players I disliked are moved. Grant, Smart. Good guys but frustrating at times and couldn’t elevate when needed. Smart is obviously the better one but we needed to move on from him. Cs need a pass first PG and who can shoot. Let’s see.

  18. samsun387

So that he doesn’t have to be in mazzulas doghouse

  19. wilkinsk

54M from the Mavs is worth way more than 50 from the Cs.

Texas taxes (funny lil anagram) is zero versus MA income taxes being in the top tier in the country.

So he pays no taxes for games played in Dallas, SA, Houston (all four game series) as well as the two in Florida. Then they have to pay locality taxes to all other 14 teams they play away.

I MA, unless they can twist the residency status somehow, you have to pay taxes for every job in state and out.

That and I don’t think he REJECTED anything, he was an RFA. The market decides what he’s worth and the Celtics match it. If the Celtics match an offer he can’t walk unless another team sends him a bigger offer sheet.

But at the end of the day the Celtics have the last word. They hold the rights to match any offer and force him to stay in Boston.

  20. Materadactyl

I also think that he wanted a bigger role and more playing time

  21. EvenTurnip9738

That was a Kristaps Porzingis extension ago

  22. daft_dunkwwwolfey

He didn’t reject a deal. Him and the Cs were just a bit apart. He wanted a higher number so he bet on himself and he got a little extra than the celtics offered in the end, so good for him. He’s ok as a 4th big but he might get big minutes for Dallas and Mazzulla had him on the bench a lot so it’s probably for the best

  23. tuxedokamen_sama

The deal was offered in 2022 offseason. Then Grant spent all of 2022-23 being the exactly same shit player instead of improving.

I look forward to watching the THJ-Grant Williams-Dwight Powell front court helping cover up for Kyrie and Luka back court. They might give up 200 points.

  24. At least Danny didn’t troll us with a RFA poison pill offer lol

“Grant gets guaranteed two season extension if JB doesn’t turnover the ball more than 3 times in a ECF game trying to go to his left”

It’s a good deal that worked out for both sides

Grant got more than what the Cs offered, it’s a small bump in paper yes but Dallas being where it is means his personal income gains after tax is much higher

Cs initially saw him as the Horford successor, and it was clear Grant was going to fit into whatever cap space Horford gave up

KP coming in meant Cs couldn’t retain Grant at his current role (8th man) with the new CBA looming

  25. bagpiper123456

He wanted an expanded role. We may not have been willing to give it to him.

For some people it’s not about trophies or money. It’s about playing regularly and getting to be a starter.

  26. wellbreastfed

Dallas Texas women and Dallas Texas business

  27. hoopahDrivesThaBoat

He mentioned the millionaire tax in MA meaning it’s not that close to the same offer.

  28. Abject-Television550

Dude wasn’t getting meaningful time in Mazzula’s rotation until coach had no choice but to go to him. If he’s betting on himself, he gets a bigger role in Dallas.

  29. WayWayBackinthe1980s

Taxes are a part of it. 54 in Texas vs 50 in Boston is probably $10M difference.

  30. Uraposey41

Dallas is a great fit for grant he’s probably going to excel there

  31. Grant is an old friend of mine, had the chance to talk with him after he signed his new deal and he said the main reason he chose Dallas over us is he saw the way the Boston “fans” were treating Jaylen Brown recently and he wanted to get far away from those “losers.”

  32. Easton1234

There’s a lot of reasons but it’s mainly that about 95% of the guys in the nba don’t care about winning a championship… it’s a job for them…if you work in a cubicle at Coca Cola you probably don’t give a shit if you’re the number 1 ranked cola company..if Pepsi comes and says they’ll pay you more and give you a better job you’re not going to stick around at coke because they’re #1
