BRobb: What Brad Stevens is still looking to add to Celtics roster this offseason

  1. Notable Excerpts:

    >“I think we’ll try to add obviously a little bit,” Stevens said. “I’d like to get a little more depth, maybe on the wing, and then also maybe with a 4/3 type. I feel pretty good about our bigs. We’ve got a couple two ways, so we’ve got some things we’re still very much looking at.”

    >“Tatum brings the ball up as much as anybody on our team,” Stevens said of the guard rotation. “So we kind of look at it as a positionless team. But Malcolm, Payton, Derrick, Tatum—those will be the guys that get us into offense. You saw tonight, JD is on the court but Banton got us into our offense most of the game. So we’re not really going to have that always designated like you would say, ‘that is a point guard, that is a 2 guard, that is a 3.’ But they’re all really capable. Jaylen as well. Those guys all bring the ball up the court.”

I came here to share this and saw the thread. OP forgot to put the excerpts i belive, so here they are:

This playmaker question: “Tatum brings the ball up as much as anybody on our team,” Stevens said of the guard rotation. **“So we kind of look at it as a positionless team. But Malcolm, Payton, Derrick, Tatum—those will be the guys that get us into offense.** You saw tonight, JD is on the court but Banton got us into our offense most of the game. So we’re not really going to have that always designated like you would say, ‘that is a point guard, that is a 2 guard, that is a 3.’ But they’re all really capable. Jaylen as well. Those guys all bring the ball up the court.”

So, do not expect for a “seismic trade” or something like that, at least for the short term: “**I’d like to get a little more depth, maybe on the wing, and then also maybe with a four/three type**. I feel pretty good about our bigs. We’ve got a couple two-ways, so we’ve got some things we’re still very much looking at.”

  3. My prediction: couple mins to fill out the roster. Then add someone at the deadline with the TPE and picks. Offseason is one of the worst times to trade for role players as most teams are confident in their squad doing well. Once the deadline comes around those seconds or the gsw pick will turn into a valuable wing off the bench

    Takeaways:

    1. Brad is pretty confident in the guard position/offensive initiator role. Lists White, Brogdon, PP, Tatum, and Brown as those that can fill that role.
    2. Brad is looking for a wing and maybe a 4/3 to round out the depth.

    Worth noting:

    – Grant TPE is worth 6.25mil
    – Celtics are 5.24mil below the 2nd apron
    – Celtics have 1 more roster spot to fill

For some reason, Spotrac says we are 3,388,443 below the 2nd apron, but my math comes out differently and I’m not sure where the discrepancy is.

Some thoughts on how to use this:

    1. Get someone now that fills the position of need OR to use as salary filler at the deadline. TPE’s can’t be aggregating with players, but you could aggregate salaries with the player you receive using the TPE
    2. Wait until the trade deadline and give our back-up wings “try-outs”, so to speak, to see if they are able to step-up. Maybe we find we have to pivot due to injuries or maybe one of our wings proves worthy of a playoff rotation spot
    3. Fuck the 2nd apron and make some big swings right now

Though I’m always keen on, and a proponent of, option 3, I think option 1 might make the most sense: acquire the player now using the TPE, probably someone on an expiring contract that we think can help us. If we need a better player at the trade deadline or need to pivot, we have more flexibility to do so. I could see getting someone with the TPE now being a precursor to another move later.

Guys like Javonte Green, Kelly Oubre, Terence Davis and Christian Wood generally fit the description of the players Brad is reportedly looking for. If we could sign one or two of those guys for the vet min, I would be quite happy with the offseason.

Is Azubuike possible for a 2 way? Is this too many centers at this point

  7. DrownedInBeans

When the Porzingis trade happened, so much of this sub said that it’s a great move and that we shouldn’t judge it yet because Stevens clearly has more moves to make and a longterm plan. He wasn’t done yet – of course trading away their best playmaker for a guy who does nothing to help in that area isn’t the only move he’ll make. “Just be patient” so many people said, “the other shoe will drop.”

What other moves could he make at this point? I know trades can come out of thin air, but I’m starting to struggle to see how this team could improve at all this offseason. I don’t think adding some minimum guys is really going to move the needle any further on this team. Does everyone feel good about just waiting to the trade deadline? Is this thin rotation gonna stay healthy enough until then to even be buyers?

Plus KP and minus G and Smart right now. We’re not a better team now than we were a month ago. There absolutely has to be something coming down the pipe.
