The biggest issue for the Toronto Raptors last season was their lack of depth and that was especially apparent in the point guard position. After losing Fred VanVleet in free agency to the Houston Rockets that already slim depth for the position got even worse. The Raptors are facing extreme difficulties in the offseason to recoup some assets given their cap situation but have made their intentions very clear on how they want to solve this problem.
For the better part of a decade, the Raptors were known for finding the hidden gem talents that take on a much bigger role than expected and consistently contribute to their team and they are looking to get back into this category after having their developmental talent pool dry up in recent years. To achieve this they are keeping their opinions as open as possible with a number of point guard candidates vying for roster positions this summer including Malachi Flynn and the returning Jeff Dowtin but also intriguing new acquisitions like Markquis Nowell and summer league standout Javon Freeman-Liberty.
What else can Raptors fans really learn about Masai Ujiri’s summer plans with these signings? Jacob Gramegna breaks it all down today on Amateur Hour Sports.

What do you think Javon Freeman-Liberty's role will be next season?
This Season We Have To Play Malachi Flynn
Much to do about nothing !
I like what I have seen from Javon's highlights. He might suprise us and earn some mins just Jeff Dowtin did last season.
You're wrong about shitting on Malachi Flynn so much…. he's going to surprise you this season now that Nurse is gone. He's got game. Pure point guard who can D up 94 feet…lots of speed to stay in front of quicker guards…also good at running the offense, good ball handler who can get them in to offensive sets without turning the ball over
I like Jeff and JFL. Good luck on rehab
Masai doesn’t seem to have a plan. Letting Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, and now Fred Vanvleet walk for nothing. Trade a 1st round pick for Thaddeus Young. What are we doing? The team has continued to get worse since the 2019 championship. We truly are ‘all in on nothing.’ We are talking about Liberty Freeman and Maquis Nowell. That does not bode well for this upcoming season. At best, I think we make another play in. I would love to be proven wrong. Masai what are you doing?
The best signing is the Sixers signing Nick the cancer Nurse. This team is way better than they performed last year. The starters will be deep. They need a pass first point guard to get the ball to their best talent up front. The bench will hopefully get used properly and we will see there is actual talent there. I still think Barnes needs to come off the bench for at least a year so he can watch other starters play to become more consistent. It won't hurt to be the number 6 for a year.
No plan has been revealed. What are you talking about? If you don't have contact, don't just dream things up it sounds foolish.
Another summer where Masai and management have done nothing BIG. Small, cheaper additions and very questionable signings.
