Is Spencer Dinwiddie A Key Starter Or Trade Asset For the Brooklyn Nets?

Spencer Dinwiddie much like Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson, found himself in new waters following the trade deadline this past season.
While his surroundings in Brooklyn were all too familiar, the role that Spencer Dinwiddie was asked to fill had a much different look to it than years prior.
The guys discuss how Dinwiddie in fact re-invented himself rather successfully, being among the top assist leaders in the NBA over the last 27 games. The problem lies in what will be asked of the 30 year old this year.
If Ben Simmons returns to form in a Point-Forward role, Spencer Dinwiddie will be asked to help supply consistent perimeter shooting and off-ball value to the offense. Doug and Adam highlight where the statistics and eye test meet to form a concerning outlook.
If the Nets are to find value at the deadline in moving Dinwiddie, it will also require the likes of Cam Thomas or Dennis Smith Jr to show they are ready for a much longer work load, affording Brooklyn to continue thee theme of getting younger through their rebuild process.

  1. Good afternoon everyone… Spencer Dinwiddie's future in Brooklyn or somewhere else has been a brewing topic of discussion lately and a lot of factors could go into deciding his future:

First- Ben Simmons is reportedly 100 percent finished with his rehab and is going into training camp to earn the starting point guard role. Obviously given the fact Ben Simmons is a max player whose main strength on offense is to be a great playmaker and assist passer could really help Brooklyn offense improve and unlock his teammates offensive numbers. That would shift Spencer dinwiddie to playing off ball scorer if he's in the starting lineup but realistically could be used as an effective sixth man backup playmaker to help lead the second unit which would be a more natural role for him.

Second- Spencer Dinwiddie is a free agent at the end of the season and is up for a possible four year final big contract extension. Unfortunately Nic Claxton is a free agent as well and Brooklyn will greatly prioritize keeping their main defensive anchor and that could unfortunately lead to Dinwiddie going somewhere else or being traded at this years deadline.

Third- Before during or near the trade deadline Spencer Dinwiddie and the Suns 2025 first round draft pick could be used to complete the Damian Lillard to Miami three team trade and acquire Tyler Herro. Tyler Herro is one of the most exciting versatile clutch scorers in the game who isn't afraid to hit game winning shots and already has a sixth man title to his belt and he's only 23 🔥. Not many scoring guards like that could come at a bargain price and since Brooklyn is focused on a small rebuild adding Tyler to an exciting young core of Mikal Bridges Cam Johnson Nic Claxton and Ben Simmons could really unlock this team's full potential together. Losing Dinwiddie could hurt Brooklyn chemistry to a degree given he would be a good sixth man player when Brooklyn is ready to contend again but acquiring Tyler Herro is a necessity for a Brooklyn team looking to find that full gear on offense….

  2. Looking at potentially trading Spencer dinwiddie at the deadline Brooklyn could choose to pair him with another expiring contract in Royce o Neale to get significant draft picks back and a possible young prospect player to add to the future of their core….

Realistically Dorian Finney Smith Royce o Neale and Spencer Dinwiddie could get Brooklyn up to two to three more first round draft picks and a potential young prospect player to add to the future of the core…

The key for Brooklyn this season is to find that balance between staying competitive and making moves towards building for the future to get back to contention….

  3. Also a bit surprised Miami and Portland haven't gotten the three team deal done yet. Brooklyn is the best third team given they have the loophole 2025 first round draft pick which would help Miami unlock more first round draft picks to send out to Portland and Spencer Dinwiddie contract is more than enough outgoing salary to acquire Tyler Herro. Brooklyn doesn't or shouldn't have to do more than that to make this blockbuster deal work. If more is required the unnecessary standoff will continue……

  4. he is best point guard for now, a stop gap bridge until we find a future point guard.

  5. The late great Kobe Bryant said, several years ago, that Ben Simmons need a jump shot. He also must improve his free throw percentage, driving hard to the basket, and having confidence in himself. Without those things, JV will never start him over Dinwiddie.
