[Larry Nance Jr.] So the @OrlandoMagic who have a majority black roster, a black head coach, and a black GM decided it was a good idea to support a man that claims that slavery had personal benefits for the enslaved?

I thought DeSantis was beefing with Mickey Mouse too

  2. Well, I mean… The Devos family never denied being a bunch of Devos’.

  3. Xekshek33

The DeVos are atrocious people so this is the least surprising thing i’ve seen recently

Now that Nance Jr has said something he’ll end up in Orlando somehow.

Wait till this guy hears about nearly every other owner’s preferences lmao

  6. Makes perfect sense. All those black people have a white “owner.” /s

Seems like the consensus is that bringing up a few isolated examples of slaves learning useful skills, runs against the general educational goal. As in, the fact that such examples are so rare ought to be part of the discussion on why slavery was so bad, instead of being part of a discussion on potential “benefits” the slaves received.

Like…it’s a true fact that some slaves learned some skills, but the way the standards are contextualizing it is the real problem.

I am just shocked that the guy who’s the son of the guy that founded the most famous pyramid scheme in the world might have low ethical standards.

Of course, the owner of my team tortured endangered tigers for years at one of his restaurants, so yeah…

  9. NJ_Citizen

Yeah they should support the guy who said if you don’t vote for him, you ain’t black

A potential Larry Nance / Jonathan Isaac twitter beef wasn’t on my wishlist this off-season, but now I’m excited.

Brain rot. Don’t let corporate media do your thinking for you.

  12. ReeferRefugee

the alternative to Ron DeSantis was Andrew Gillum, who was found in a hotel methed out with a dying rent boy

  13. yoheadabovewater

Wait until he hears what Jonathan Isaac has been up to.

I remember when off-season posts were shitposts. Now it’s just politics

I like Nance and all, but was he paying attention to Gilbert’s political donations when he was with Cleveland?

bro I’m so fuckin over this nonsense that “Florida teaches that slavery was beneficial to the slaves”

nobody can read past a headline, it says one time out of the hundreds of mentions of how bad slavery was that some slaves, after they were freed, used skills they learned to make a living for themselves

at no point do they say that people benefitted from slavery it’s literally insane how people just see a headline and run with it and go crazy over a literal nothing story

This will be fun to see all the people who don’t know what they’re talking about here.

this is why it never made sense to me to come out as an org donating to anybody really. how is the potential blow back worth it?

To be clear, no one claimed that slavery was a net benefit for African Americans. Moreover Desantis did not personally write the curriculum. Finally, what the controversial part actually says is that those who endured the horrors of slavery had to develop resilience and resourcefulness because slavery is very bad and worse for those who aren’t otherwise very resilient. This was also written by an African American (for whatever that is worth).

Basically, the controversial passage is being interpreted in the least charitable way as a political tactic. No one would argue against the idea that those that endure the horrors of slavery were capable and resilient people. They had to be, because again, slavery is really horrendous.

I just want to add this: They didn’t HAVE to do this. Not at all. They’re billionaires and could have used various shell companies to make this donation. They’re publicly flexing their muscles by stating that THE ORLANDO MAGIC are making this contribution.

There’s lines you don’t cross in life. The workers (players, staff, countless folks behind the scenes you don’t know the names of) now are tied to such an announcement that may not align with their views. This is why corporations SHOULD NOT be involved in political affairs.

This is gross for no reason. Could have easily just been “The Devos family support the Gov” and let folks figure out the rest from there.

I find it really odd for any team to donate to any politician. It’s literally inviting the political world into the doorstep of the league for no benefit whatsoever.
