[Dwyane Wade] So the excuse they pulled out for me is “Oh, he shot a lot of free throws [in the 06 Finals].” Well, why? Because of my attack. I attacked with that much force, and I attacked in angles. Did I get a couple “superstar calls?” You’re damn right. All superstars get ‘em.

>I think that’s lazy for people to say “he shot a lot of free throws.” That’s lazy. It’s a way to discredit you…Everyone wants to make excuses for something. Facts. Most of the fouls were legit. Mavs guards couldn’t keep Flash in front of them. The world really fell for Mark Cubum propaganda

  2. Nice_Ass_Lawn

They had Dirk Nowitzki helping defend the rim against prime Wade. What they expect lmao

Notice there’s no video breaking down all the “bad calls” Wade got despite every game being on Youtube in its entirety and Mavs fans being totally obsessed with that narrative lol

  3. Diggity_Dave

Year 3 Wade was an absolute terror going to the basket. He sought out contact, was consistently crashing to the floor on drives, and most importantly, he had ice-cold water in his veins.

  4. mrwhite2323

Remember when you complain about Wade

Jordan shot 78 fts in the 98 finals in 6 games

Giannia shot 86 fts vs the Suns

Shaq averaged the most fts in a final series with 17 fts per game

Players who attacked the rim get more calls

Edit: Jordan 70 fts in 98

Wade shot 63 times in the paint in 6 games. Jordan only 42.

  5. Eric_T_Meraki

The Mavs game plan was to stop Shaq mainly which gave Wade a lot of opportunities on offense. He was hitting tough shots as well which wasn’t like the refs were helping him there lol.

  6. D.Wade most free throws attempted in a playoff series:

    1. 2006 Finals: 97 free throws attempted
    2. 2011 Second Round: 58 free throws attempted
    3. 2009 First Round: 58 free throws attempted

    Fishy.

  7. What caught fans by surprise in 2006 was the way the rules had changed in 2004. In 2004, after the low scoring Detroit Pistons won a championship with defense, the NBA opened up the perimeter game by making it illegal to touch the ball handler, making blocking penetration illegal, and strictly enforcing the defensive three second rule.

It took a couple of years for perimeter players to take full advantage of the new rules. When Wade did so in the 2006 Finals, fans complained about foul calls that simply would not have been called in 2003-04.

Furthermore, even today, many years after the rules were changed, fans complain about plays designed purely to draw fouls. During his prime seasons James Harden was extremely clever at drawing fouls, and many fans hated that style of play.

In addition, the players like Wade and Harden who draw fouls also tend to exaggerate contact. It’s not pure flopping, because there is contact, but it is an exaggerated response that borders on flopping. Yet it’s very effective.

    >Did I get a couple “superstar calls?” You’re damn right. All superstars get ‘em.

    *sad Stephen Curry noises*

  9. hitmantb

There is a difference between superstar calls and 20 free throws a game.

This was more like Kings Lakers game 6 in 2002.

  10. stilloriginal

I re-watched the series in 2020 when the world shut down

Those calls were legit. Wade figured out at some point in game 2 how to “split the defense”. From there on out nobody could guard him.

I suggest you kids re-watch, if this series were played today he would have shot even more.

  11. misterbisster

The fact that “superstar calls” are a totally understood and accepted part of the NBA show how terribly officiated this garbage style of pretend basketball is.

It’s why people would rather watch the fucking Houston Texans play the Arizona Cardinals on a random Sunday afternoon than half the playoff games in the NBA.

  12. Fit-Minimum-5507

    >Did I get **a couple** “superstar calls?”

A couple? He averaged 16 FT attempts per game that series. He didn’t get a couple of calls. He got all of them.

  13. TechnicianWeird7593

90% of this sub didn’t watch the NBA in 2006. They just see the FT attempts and say it was rigged.

75% of this Sub never saw prime Wade play and can’t fathom a 6’4” guard attacking the rim like Wade does. Wade’s playstyle was closer to Giannis than it is to Harden’s.

  14. Sad_Income_959

Him and Rose are great for running full speed and jumping towards the basket then hitting the floor and getting injured

  15. HeAintSh1t

Rings removed, Wade/Lebron is like the Tmac/Kobe talk. Unless you were there you can’t imagine this was a debate over a course of a few years.

  16. TonkatsuRamenFan

League put in the call. They needed to build up another all star athletic guard as insurance after Kobe rape case and Wade was seen as the next man up.

  17. Reinmeika

If you weren’t around for the ‘06 Wade, just say that. This argument might be better suited for the Heatles run, but this version of Wade was a monster. It was foul him or let him score at will.

  18. Boomhauer_007

Why do NBA players crave validation so much more than other athletes? In no other sports are players constantly talking things like how much credit they deserve for something that was 20 years ago

  19. CursedAttempt

Superstar calls shouldn’t even be a thing. But the NBA’s officiating is absolute garbage and is probably the worst of all major sports.

  20. Answer70

There are superstar calls, and then there’s whatever the hell Dwyane Wade got in those finals. His phantom calls per minute was off the charts.

  21. browndude10

A certain fanbase would tell Wade that the refs rigged the finals for them

  22. WhoopingKing

Also, remember when Kobe outscored the entire Mavs team by himself after 3Q?

That was the same team. To say the 06 mavs was pitiful at defending opposing guards, might be an understatement

  23. CalmResearch3132

Yeah, Wade spinning out of control, taking 4 steps and lunging his shots to draw a foul.

I remember like what the hell?

  24. [Wade threw an elbow at Dirk with 26 seconds to go of Game 6 and got free throws out of it lol](https://youtu.be/Rm143yczm84)

It was the worst officiated Finals of all time, and Wade trying to claim it was just “superstar calls” is incorrect.

  25. ComeAtMeYo

Nah rigged af finals, fuck that dismissive comment.

  26. betweenthebars34

“I got foul calls when dudes didn’t even touch me, but it’s all good” – sure …

Donaghy’s more correct than people give him credit for. And this little wade retrospective, doesn’t exactly include any of that.

  27. Fuck this bitch trying to justify those absolutely ridiculous calls. Just a complete shit job by the NBA for the Finals.

  28. Smellmyhand

Dirk: “We just decided to let the past be the past”

    DWade: “Actually, fuck that”

  29. mmmmmsandwiches

“A couple” really doing some heavy lifting here. He attempted 97 free throws in the 06 finals and in games 3-6 he averaged 18 free throws per game.

  30. Aggressive-Ad-756

If he believed that he wouldn’t be talking about it

  31. loco_mixer

lol it bothers him. that just confirms its true. and he did get a couple of hundred superstar calls.

  32. financial_goth

D Wade shot more free throws than the entire Mavericks team combined over a 6 game series.

    That’s way beyond “superstar calls”.

Hey if you believe the bullshit from Wade I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell ya.

  33. soxyboy71

He took 25 free throws himself to the mavs 24 in one game. Let’s call that sheer will.

Now, anybody here please show me in a six game stretch someone taking 98 free throws, cause he had 97.

There at times was nobody within arms length of the over rated fuck and he would get the call. And before u start…

Jordan Kobe Mcgrady Vince Klay. Maybe even Ray.

That incorrect spelling name having fuck in a weak east at the time, had his team miss the playoff. Then came Bosh. Then came LBJ. Then came Bennet Salvatore.

  34. VerbiageBarrage

Man acts like he didn’t get excessive foul calls in 06. It was JARRING how much he went to the line.

Over the course of his career, I’ve got no beef with his fouls, he was a hard-driving talented guard who got the normal amount of calls. But 06 Finals definitely made me wonder if Pat Riley had some dirt on Stern.

  35. financial_goth

    Wade’s 97 free throw attempts broke Shaq’s 2001 record of 93.

This is extremely glaring because it means Wade got more free throws over a series than a player who was fouled on purpose almost every other play.
