Losing Gigi was a horrible tragedy, but incorporating her in the statue is weird. The statues are there to commemorate the sports-related achievements of those in the Lakers organization, and suddenly making one about tragedy has a performative and disrespectful ring to it.
Other people died in that crash, many others die in similar tragedies all the time, this is strange to bring her in on.
Has that Dear Evan Hansen “well the kid is still dead but at least we have an opportunity to use them to make ourselves feel better about it” energy.
