that’s chump change for a guy like me but i’m sure nba players could use the money
I mean, it’s more basketball for us. Who could have an issue with that besides this sub?
Damn. Players on the losing team of the quarterfinals could each get a fully loaded minivan.
No, the money for the players was the never the problem with me as a fan. This tournament *still* doesn’t mean shit, that’s the problem.
It really doesn’t. All I can see this is as is some regular season games, but rebranded to try and look cooler. Like whatever Sierra Mist is called now.
Instead of the prize money just give them the fine equivalent.
Winner gets 3 homophobic slurs and gets to hold a gun
Loser gets to curse out his organization
how much do the fans get?
The NBA was so close to actually making this something intriguing. If this was something a lot closer to what the FA Cup is for England, this would be great. The problem is these games still count for the regular season. It’s just putting lipstick on the pig for a month or so. This should have been it’s own separate event with no regular season implications. That in practice makes the regular season shorter and therefore more important while still fulfilling the NBA’s TV contracts and gives us potentially high leverage games in November and December. Going full European and inviting in G League teams with a knockout format would make it even better
I think people are underestimating the competitive drive of the best players in the world.
we’ve literally already known this for months
Why would I care if they make more money? They already make a ton for playing basketball. I don’t watch the sport because they make money. FFS
It would be great if at least part of that winning can go to charity. Like each player can choose their own charity. That would be more meaningful
Down the line, will people rank a player higher if they win this in-season tourney more than people who haven’t won it?
I think you’ll see certain teams that are loaded with vet mins (Looking at you, Phoenix) go harder to win this than other teams.
This is amazing for bench riders or people converted from two way contracts. Great money if they get signed to any team that’s in the tournament
why would the players getting paid more make me care?
Of all the things I could not possibly give less of a shit about this in-season tournament is right at the top of the list.
Why would (mostly all) millionaire athletes getting more money *move the needle for fans*? Unless we get a cut…
Why would this move the needle for us? We ain’t getting nothin lol
Who’s going to pay attention to this contrived horseshit? Another pointless cash-grab just like the play-in tournament.
Forget money. Give out lottery balls.
Expand the lottery to 15 teams (if necessary) and put the winner in the lottery, even if they make the playoffs.
Top tier teams will do anything in their power to win as it would generally mean going from a late 20s to low teens pick. Teams that would already be in the lottery would get more balls increasing the likelihood of getting the #1 pick. This would need to apply to the team’s next first round pick that they own, so a team that has already traded their upcoming pick has incentive.
Since it’s one and done more teams would have a legit shot at this tourney than the 3 or 4 that actually have a chance in the playoffs. You’d have about 15 teams with a chance of winning and you would see actual lottery teams winning some years. Every team would treat this more seriously than the first 2 rounds of the actual playoffs.
It’s not about fan incentives lol. If the games are good, people will watch. You need the players to be incentivized. That’s all that matters.
The answer to your question in Parenthesis is no
500k is a drop in the bucket for the superstars. If I’m Steph or LeBron, I’m not going to exert myself too much during this tournament in order to save myself for the playoffs.
One of the worst things I’ve ever heard of in sports. Absolutely laughable
Move the needle for fans….???!
My dude. Professional male athletes are vastly overpaid. Like. It’s sickening. It isn’t their fault. It’s the system. Still, overpaid soooo much.
And it’s supposed to move the needle for me to see them get paid…more?!
Lmao sure it moves the needle. Closer and closer to not following professional sports anymore.
Players are getting 60 million a year. So no, this isn’t moving the needle for me
I feel like the NBA really missed an opportunity and could have easily made this an inter-league tournament with the G-League. There’s probably a ton of better variations but I’d have something like the 14 teams that missed the playoffs face off against the top 14 teams in the G-League in a March madness style tournament. Not only does it give G-League teams (players) an opportunity to play against NBA teams, it also creates a bit more competition down in the G-League itself opening the door for expansion.
I can assure you, nobody cares.
Why would i givr a fuck about that
Does it move the needle for me? Do I care about people making 7-8 figures may get to make 6 more figures for doing the thing they already make 7-8 figures for? No.
I don’t understand why we have to bribe millionaires to care about the GAMES that they are already being paid handsomely for.
Nothing says out of touch like throwing rich people more money…
Regional sports broadcasting fees go up $4/mo for this. Not worth it.
Great for the players–as a fan, doesn’t make me care about this any more than before.
Lol. No. How does that move the needle for fans? We don’t get any money.
Why the hell would prize money for players make fans excited lol
I guess ESPN is going to scream at me until I care about this (I don’t)
Yes! It means so much to me if an average player already making 18 million for being an average player gets 500k more.
Why would you ask the fans if we care if some multi millionaire’s have a chance to make more?
How much do the fans get tho?
No because I don’t care if the players make more money for a weird tourney. I care that stay healthy.
Not at all.
How about this: fans get paid, otherwise it’s lame
I cannot state strongly how little i give a fuck about financial incentives to millionaires.
Sure. I’m certainly excited to see people who make 30 to 40 million dollars a year scrape up another half a million.
why would i care about a bunch of men playing for money.
a mid season tournament is stupid. There are already too many games as it is. Give them a longer all star break and cut the season by 20 games.
I sense an uptick in injuries.
Dudes out there making 50m+ a year. 500K is less than they make per game anyway.
Why would the fans care about multi-millionares making a few hundred grand more? Maybe if that prize money went to buying free tickets, parking, and beer for fans they would care?
I read an article explaining this in season tournament. I gotta say, I don’t see the purpose of it. Like…it has no effect on the championship at the end of the season. It doesn’t impact regular season standings. So what’s the point?
The bigger question of whether this moves the needle for players.
