[NY Times] Giannis Antetokounmpo on his next contract: “I would not be the best version of myself if I don’t know that everybody’s on the same page, everybody’s going for a championship, everybody’s going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do. And if I don’t feel that, I’m not signing.”

> But over the past three years, he has brought them along for what he hopes can be a more lasting endeavor: taking ownership of their money and his future. A few months ago, Antetokounmpo launched Ante, Inc. to house the brothers’ projects and investments. It’s about Giannis’s life beyond basketball, though basketball still matters to him — a lot. In a few weeks, he will be eligible for a three-year extension worth about $173 million, but he doesn’t plan to sign one just yet.

> “The real question’s not going to be this year — numbers-wise it doesn’t make sense,” Antetokounmpo said. “But next year, next summer it would make more sense for both parties. Even then, I don’t know.”

> He added: “I would not be the best version of myself if I don’t know that everybody’s on the same page, everybody’s going for a championship, everybody’s going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do. And if I don’t feel that, I’m not signing.”

This sounds exactly like what he’s said before. He’s all about winning championships and if the franchise ain’t about that, he will leave

We knew a lot of this, but this is not a fun read. We’ve got 2 years of guys locked in to figure this shit out. Giannis isn’t going to stay here just to stay here. We gotta fucking win

It’s going to be a bloodbath on r/NBA

  4. Nothing surprising here. This team has a well established timeline, Horst has a year or so to start working on the next plan.

If there is no plan to reestablish the roster, I won’t have hard feelings about the years GA has given us.

Not surprising at all. And honestly the right thing to say. He wants to win. If he doesnt feel like the team wants to spend the money to build a championship roster anymore, hell go somewhere where they will. But thats why the Middleton and Lopez contracts end in 2 years. Gives them the ability to bring in younger talent at top dollar to show they want to win for as long as they have him

No issue with that. If you’re a generational talent you don’t have to stay with a team that’s not competing just because of loyalty. If a team can’t build a contender around you they don’t deserve to keep you, there’s no shame in taking the KG route
