[Mussatto] Thunder ownership will commit $50 million (5.5%) toward a downtown OKC arena that will cost a minimum of $900 million. Here’s how that compares to what ownership groups in Milwaukee, Detroit and Sacramento contributed to their new arenas: Milwaukee 33% | Detroit 63% | Sacramento 51%

Detroit is surprising high, but I guess the city is pretty broke isn’t it?

    – Australian asking.

  2. If I lived in OKC, I would be more insulted by this than if it were handed to the owners for free tbh

  3. Raptors887

The owners are the ones who are going to benefit the most from it too.

  4. LightsInThaSky

There’s a lot of context missing here. It comes with a 25 year commitment from the team to remain in OKC and the arena will be publicly owned, like the current arena. The fact the ownership group is putting anything into it is a sweet deal.

  5. As a taxpayer you should be able to opt out of paying for this type of shit.

  6. Jesmer8490

The rich using the taxpayer dollars to build their arena and then increase their net worth, while using a disproportionately small portion of their money. This is absolutely disgusting.

  7. DubsFanAccount

I have a crazy plan that just might work: Move the team back to Seattle.

  8. Excellent-Cod-3430

Yea cause the single mothers living off minimum wage should be paying for the arena instead of the billionare owners

  9. rumblegod

Nah I’m cool with it. Oklahoma sucks and needs to start paying for nice stuff. Glad it’s on the tax payers. Might just change this shirt state around when they pay for good things.

  10. Punjabiveer30

I wonder if the city will get 94.5% of the revenue as well once it’s build

  11. Low_Wall_7828

The mayor lauds the team for their contribution, a whole 5.5%. That’s on the initial cost of $900 million which everyone knows it will go over. It’s such a f’ing scam.

  12. Margravos

How much does the city own of the new stadium?

  13. Gristle__McThornbody

Nothingburger but this will get negative attention for obvious reasons. This is business as usual. And believe it or not but the city benefits from this.

  14. nightchurn

We are a corrupt nation. As corrupt as any third world country.

We need to stop pretending otherwise.

  15. Socialism for the rich.

Capitalism for the rest of the plebs.

  16. whatdoinamemyself

Tax/corruption aside… why a new arena? Chesapeake is already pretty nice. One of the nicest looking NBA arenas I’ve been to, if not the best. And they got upgrades/renovations not THAT long ago.

  17. This is like the entire /r/NBA “investing” $100,000 to buy a new NBA team.

It’s an insult to the real investors.

In this case, it is an insult to the taxpayers.

  18. Tangentkoala

Well yeah thunders are desperate they know there’s a real threat of them going back to Seattle

  19. YoungNissan

Where’s the rest of the noney coming from? If it’s the tax payers that’s just cruel. Why does the Thunder pay the least and get all the profits of the new stadium afterwards?

  20. Wild-Apricot-9161

They’ve got to increase minimum wage in that state man.

  21. Are they trying to lay the ground work to move the team? I’ve seen this one before.

  22. Zealousideal_Ad1734

Not a shocker a bunch of thieves don’t want to use their own money.

  23. domdomburg

That’s what you get for stealing a franchise.

  24. antipistonsandsixers

I hate this franchise with every day more

  25. StarryScans

Cheapskates, that’s why they lost Harden and never win NBA chip.

  26. clingbat

Cities/states should stop paying anything for these stadiums. They often don’t make nearly that much back in tax revenue and they don’t get a penny out of the significant increased value of the team itself unless their contribution is quite high. It only works if they all stop doing it though.

It’s arguably even worse when they do what Philly did for Citizens Bank Park way back when, instituting an additional tax on rental cars in perpetuity to reclaim their contribution and then some.

Mandatory Bring Back the Sonics comment

All the comments here are hilarious. Literally nobody took even a second to understand the context behind this deal. People are always just looking for something to be offended by lmao.

  29. MilouuuuMaltz

The owners are the ones who are going to benefit the most from it too.

  30. IgnantWisdom

Good riddance, fuck OKC’s ownership. I guess this what yall signed up for when you stole our team though.
