DPOY 2: Electric Buckaloo
When Giannis was asked where he was when Horst/Griffin called him about the trade, he said:
1. I was at the gym and heard an “Oh, shit!” along with some whispers. Then someone showed him the phone saying Dame was traded and got super excited, and then came the 2nd tweet saying it was for Jrue, and his “my heart sank to my butt” (probably meant “my heart sank to my stomach”)
2. He continued with his workout because when he starts something, he has to finish it.
3. He called Jrue to talk to him and hear where he was at, and then they reminisced about all their battles and their finals run (The Valley Oop, game winning block, etc.). And then he called Allen, too. Thereafter, the next couple of days at home were quiet for him as he reflected on what happened.
3. He wished them the best, and now we all have to move forward.
K_J – just wanted to say, super appreciate you posting all of the interviews just like you always do for us!!
Seeing this makes me believe the firing of coach bud will have more of an impact than actually getting Dame. I feel like bud was our Mark Jackson.
Even though we won with him our offensive and defensive game plan was not good at all and was constantly abused in the playoffs. Stagnant stationary offense mixed with defense that refuses to adapt to any situation. In simplicity our offense revolves around 1-2 guys. Everyone else is simply a role player whose role is to stand at the 3 point line and wait. With opponents defense KNOWING where 3-4 players are at all times they can easily shift their focus to the problem (Giannis). Sure Giannis can pass when they crash but it sure is a lot easier to recover when you know the guy is in the same spot you left him. With more offensively minded coaches on the team I expect a lot more movement from our “role players” offball and to make them more than glorified 3 pt shooters. But honestly offensively we weren’t terrible because Giannis is actually amazing at everything (besides shooting).
Defense is what ruined us. In my opinion Defense relies on outmatching and outsmarting opponents. Sure, our defense could outmatch a lot of teams, but NEVER outsmart them. We just stuck with the same base defense for 4+ years, only switching a tiny bit when buds job was on the line championship year. Our defense this year is going to easily be best in the league. I’m thinking possibly historic. Giving opponents different looks constantly forces mistakes AKA turnovers which then lead to fastbreak. Expect Giannis to have a career year just off of fastbreak alone.
And literally all of this is without factoring dame in. Now we have the best pick and roll player next to Giannis and honestly barring injury I believe this might be the next dynasty 🤷♂️ thank you for listening to my Ted talk
