Jake Fischer on Pascal Siakam not wanting to sign an extension anywhere else outside of Toronto : “From what I heard, I think that will change if we get to the regular season and Toronto is a team that doesn’t want to sign him to an extension or hasn’t done it” (Via @Balldontlie )

On the raptors republic pod, Samson said they tried to trade him for the third pick in 2021 draft. They tried to trade him this summer but deals fell apart, when Pascals camp said he wouldn’t re sign anywhere. I think it will eventually happen
I wonder if Pascal is maintaining his extension refusal simply to kill his value and internally has already decided to enter free agency ASAP. I’m not a mind reader nor am I going to project on to him. I’m just wondering.
PAY HIM
I know I recall reading somewhere last year that there was some hesitancy – since Siakam was extension eligible last year as well but likely declined doing so since it seemed likely he was going to get another All-NBA nod in 22/23 before the season went to hell – on MLSE’s part and that they’d prefer a deal of 3 years vs. 4 but good lawd I cannot recall a scenario in Raptors history as obtuse as this one where:
-We have a star player who is in the 20-25 range and occasionally knocks on doors 15-19
-Loves being a Raptor
-Wants to re-sign with us(!!)
-And MLSE isn’t seemingly even interested in negotiations
Maybe i’m showing my age – I remember when we lost McGrady in free agency and i’ve seen every Raptors great from Carter to even Lowry never be a lifer i.e. all of them got traded in some manner (though in DeMar’s case it wasn’t their choice) – I get they haven’t done this because they want to keep the option of trading him open for the midseason but this is just **so stupid**
Beyond Pascal having more value on a 4-5 year contract if they truly do decide to trade arguably the 3rd best player in franchise history, the possibility of him getting another All-NBA nod and thus opening up an above max-to-supermax deal is just going to complicate what is already shaping up to be a very costly and difficult offseason
Put another way, you cannot go in to 2024 with Precious, Pascal, Trent and O.G. all RFAs/UFAs respectively
Bullshit ESPN ranks him 25. You try to trade 25 up to 8-12 ala 2k. If nobody overvalues him, you really hesitate to pay 25 that big contract. I bet his first choice is to make all NBA and re-sign at home for the biggest payday. If I’m Toronto I want that too. Money aside, Pascal playing at all NBA level for the duration of the season would be Christmas wishlist #1, 2, and 3.
It doesn’t even make sense for him to extend tbh. He’s already locked in top dollar no matter what happens, he has a free shot to try and make the big big money. He has leverage on management, because under no circumstances will they be able to let another guy walk, that would be suicide. Pascal has them by the nuts.
We need to offer that extension ASAP in my opinion. Losing him for nothing or trading him for fuck all at the deadline are both catastrophic errors
Masai driving a bus to the cliff on this like it’s Thelma and Louise.

“Pascal wants to sign in Toronto unless he isn’t offered a contract from Toronto”
Riveting stuff, Jake Fischer. The sports insider game is officially oversaturated
This is ‘The Last Dance’
Both OG and Siakam want their big contracts, this is the last big hoo-rah for this core.
This is not complicated.
We had a shitty season last year. We replaced the coaching staff. We made some personnel changes. We want to see if that makes us a less shitty team. Management seems to believe it will. And so far so good.
If it doesn’t make us a less shitty team, we trade Pascal and OG and rebuild.
If it does, we sign Pascal and OG and try to compete.
Okay there’s enough reports to solidly say that Pascal would sign an extension now if offered. He’s not waiting in hopes of a supermax. But the front office is being stupid as fuck and won’t offer it. Jesus fuck
Trade him for shooters and be done with it
