[Ryan Ward]D’Angelo Russell on his inspiration defensively: “My inspiration has been Derrick White. I want to be Derrick White. He doesn’t get a lot of credit for what he does. Makes all the winning plays. That’s what I want to be.”

Outside of the fact that it’s pretty cool that D.White is a player type that is worth emulating, I have to give Russell a lot of credit for being open to the fact that as a human he is not perfect and being willing to look at his game in a critical light and being willing to accept constructive criticism in a positive way. Not everyone can do that. I further am impressed that he acknowledges there were legitimate reasons his coaches kept him off the court last season, mainly his defense, and then actively going about improving in those areas. It sounds like a little thing all players do, but it just isn’t. Good on D. Russell for openly working on improving at the expense of his ego.

imagine telling Derrick this in 2015 when he was plating D2 lol
“see that guy who just went #2 overall? he’s gonna want to be like you in 8 years”

DLo’s lying. His inspiration is definitely Cuttino Mobley. They’re both instant offense, on both ends of the court.
