Immanuel Quickley first 20 games last season. 9.4/4.5/3.2 on 52 TS%. If IQ could turn it around I have faith Grimes can do the same.

This is the worst logic. If one player can turn it around then every other player can too? Some players just don’t get better. Not saying it’s one way or the other, but this logic is flawed at best.

Their roles are different though. Iq has more opportunity because he’s one of the main ball handlers on the team.

  3. Not only is Grimes slumping, he also just had a wrist/hand injury. I’ll give him more time to get back to his 2022/2023 form.

IQ is just way more talented. Grimes is a solid 3&D guy when he’s hitting his shots. But his ceiling is limited because of his ball handling and (lack of) shiftiness. He’s similar to Reggie Bullock. This isn’t a slight at all, because those types of players have value. But he’s insanely overrated by a lot of fans.

  5. Not saying Grimes can’t turn it around, but IQ just has more moxy. You can see a clear difference in their demeanors. IQ looks for a challenge, Grimes looks scared

Exactly. IQ struggled for almost two months last year and people are hyperventilating because of a bad five game stretch for QDot. The shots will fall again, just like RJs early season hot shooting was inevitably going to come down to earth.

That said, while I do think he fits with the higher usage starters from a team standpoint, I am wondering whether the limited occasional catch and shoot role he has with the starters is limiting his overall development.

Knicks are committed to Grimes. They like everything about him. He can lose some minutes while he struggles, but he’s NOT coming out of his current role. He’s not hurting us and his role is still important. Even if he just plays 18-20 minutes a game (starting first and third) its worth it because that time is spent chasing their best scorer around,

Part of what make Thibs a good coach (and a frustrating one for fans) is he’s patient with players. He doesn’t yank guys around. He doesn’t like to tinker. He want’s players to PLAY their way back into it and look at this team… we play hard, we never give up, we are getting better. Young guys are getting better under Thibs. Older guys are getting better under Thibs. Guys are playing better together.
