Thoughts on Shumpert? Great rookie year, but did the injury limit his potential or was he always destined to be a role player?

Mix of both? If he was a consistent shooter he could have been a top 50 player in the league for sure, but that was never his game, and without that he was definitely never gunna be one of those top 15-20 guys.

ACL tear definitely slowed his development down but before that he was a defensive nightmare for any elite guard during that era. Still turned out to be a great role player, always respected his hustle & he’s GOATed for inventing #Knickstape

I think he could’ve been more than a good role-play, which he was for Cleveland during their run if:

    a) he didn’t get hurt

    b) was allowed to play more freely under Woodson. Let’s not forget he was a point guard at Georgia Tech. He showed some decent handle with creative drives to the basket during is rookie year. I think Woody’s offense shackled him to be strictly 3 and D. You could say the tea was much better like that, and I wouldn’t argue. But I do feel his offensive game was stunted.

Dude was my favorite at that time. Always will regard him very highly. Although I don’t think he’s a great rapper I think he still has talent. Also he was with teyana Taylor and like DAMN. I think in the end he was always gonna be a role player, if I remember correctly he wasn’t the best shooter but could lock down a teams best player other than bigs. The dude had a nasty motor and was a real threat in transition and going downhill. Much love to shump!

Injury fucked him up. He was super athletic before it and never quite got his bounce back.

Always a role player. Never had a consistent jump shot aside from the ACL tear.

  7. Injuries destroyed Landry fields and Shumps careers. Such a shame because if we had both of them in 2012 instead of relying on 40year olds we probably could have gone to the finals. Both of them were capable double digit scorers, good defenders and solid playmakers.

Shumps best comp is lu dort, and the way lu improved offensively i believe shump could have done the same. Not a star but high level role player who is critical to any championship team.

Cursed once he shaved that Adidas logo onto his hair.

You know what I remember most about Shump?

Stupid hand fouls 25 feet from the basket.

  10. He was a rookie the first year I watched the Knicks.

Loved him. Will always remember that huge put back against the pacers in the playoffs and where I was in life at that moment.

I actually want one of those dark blue cavs jerseys with a Shumpert or JR smith. But can’t bring myself to own a jersey of a rival.

Reminds me of Grimes a little. A great defender with an inconsistent offensive game/shot.

He looked like an athletic freak before the injury. High flying dunker. It was very exciting. He was never that player again after

He had a surprisedly awesome rookie year. I wish he developed further, but he didn’t really seem to improve after his rookie year. He also tore his leg and shoulder apart, so that sucked…

Injuries and the league didn’t know if he was a point guard or an off guard.

  15. Injury fucked him up, he could have been an elite 1-3 defender and still was a good defender in his better years. He also was a solid rebounder for his position. However he never developed a three point shot or any ability to consistently generate offense.

He ended up being a solid role player on a championship team and had good years in New York and Cleveland before bouncing around a lot. Not a bad career even if the injury both cut it short and hampered his potential.

Shump never had a good first step. He never could beat anyone off the dribble because of it. That’s the difference between an ok player and a star. His handle was very average. His jumper off the dribble was also very average. All of that prior to his knee falling apart, so it didn’t really matter

related but unrelated, i still cant believe that we traded shump, jr, chandler, and felton and the best asset we got back was lance thomas. no shade to lance and i get phil wanted a high draft pick, but idk if ive ever seen such a failure to capitalize on selling assets
