The real reason young players are STRUGGLING more than ever before

NBA rookies are struggling to make a positive impact. While they may occasionally go off for 20-25 points, the overwhelming trend is that young players (rookies and second year players) have struggled immensely to make a positive impact analytically. And teams are noticing, with many teams like the Heat, Nuggets, Pacers opting to draft players who are deemed more NBA ready.

When you consider the analytical impact of players like Cade Cunningham, Scoot Henderson, Jalen Green etc, you simply see the effects of all the rule changes and growth curves that have made their step to the NBA even harder than it used to be.

  1. I have question for you rob what would the Boston's Celtics record be if they replaced Jaylen brown with Scottie Barnes? People always dis credit Barnes because he's on a bad team but if he was doing what he's doing now top 15 in Bpm, vorp, epm on the Celtics people would call him a top 10 player. But people laugh when calling Barnes a top 15-20 player right now

  2. I’m a little confused, was Gradey held back a grade in elementary school or high school? If your birthday is between January and June youd be 18 when you graduate high school…Gradey’s birthday is in November so he should of been 17 at high school grad and should of been 18 at the draft since he was a one and done, but he was 19….or does the US start school one year later than we do? But then Scoot is currently 19 and will be 20 in February which makes him technically a year younger than Gradey and they shouldn’t have been in the same grade going through school. Same thing holds true with Lively, Black, Emoni, Noah Clowny, Bilal, Nick Smith Jr., Wemby, Whitehead, and Whitmore who were all born in 2004 where Gradey was born in 2003.

  3. the reality is, if there is a good offer from detroit for og anunoby you do it. the team is headed for a rebuild and you dont need og anunoby on a rebuilding team. there is no free agents coming to raptors. only way raptors can build is through the draft. its what is best for the organization and the franchise if they want to contend in 3-4 years.

  4. vegas odds put og anunoby at 83 percent of being moved before trade deadline. all we can do is hope raptors lose every game so siakam and og are traded. emotional attachments to players doesnt help in doing the right thing for the franchise when the team is this bad.

  5. Thanks for an excellent and insightful stream. Your analysis and use of advanced stats was extremely informative and often surprising. I agree that we need to have patience. I also think we have little to lose by giving Gradey Dick more playing time. I still have faith that he will be a solid player in time. But I worry about the depth of his struggles and what impact that will have on his confidence. These are some random thoughts. I am perplexed as to how terrible the Pistons are despite their stockpile of talent even if you discount Cunningham's value. The Spurs are light on talent, but they play like a poorly coached team. I know it's Pops, but they seem in such disarray. Wembayama flashes an amazing set of skills, but too often looks lost out on the court. I suppose decent guard play would help. He also needs to get a lot stronger. I have no idea how the Raptors will get better this year or build for next year and beyond. I'm sure there is a way, but there is just a total lack of clarity. We seemed to be stuck in mediocrity which is a terrible place to be.

  6. I'm not sure how accurate that Spotrac listing is. See Coby White listed as a UFA when he extended for 3 years so I'm not sure exactly. I'm sure we'll address free agency at some point more clearly. Tough to say right now before we get through the trade deadline.

  7. I think you're putting way too much emphasis on BPM as a metric seeing as how it has more to do with the team you play on rather than the individual you are trying to analyze.

  8. Team is going through the hardest part of the process: finally admitting defeat and moving to rebuild direction. Stop dragging it out. Time is more valuable than maximizing return on every asset.

  9. Probably should have hit the rebuild two years ago to have a shot. If Scottie's really going to be that guy, the window is small and time is limited.
JimmyHighroller did a vid a few months ago. The number of stars that win a chip on the team that drafted them is miniscule. Almost never happens. Guys don't stick around 7 years anymore. The only redemption is that Scottie wasn't drafted to a a terrible team at the time, except they are now. Arguably worse than just being terrible then in terms of timeline. By the time Raps are ready to contend, nobody we see here today will still be on the team, neither in roster nor coaching.

  10. Rookies struggle often especially in 1st half of season. The lack of consistent structure tends to hurt them.
