Where you can always catch us on your podcast feed every Hornet spox score.com also go check Doug out on his substack and you can listen to me WFNZ every weekday from 12: to 300 p.m. yeah Doug you were showing me the new setup I don’t know if you want to change the
Camera angle so people can see what is I guess a little bit of a new situation really what I want people to see is the microwav looking storage that you have right next to you to heat up some takes later on yeah so I mean it’s not all
That changed um I’ve just uh moved moved a few things around in the office I’m sitting now uh you know look listen you go on a break and you want to come back you want to you feel refreshed and sometimes you need to refresh the look
As well so uh I still got some work to do uh but we’re getting there we’re getting closer all right I just again the microwave right next to you like I can’t wait for us to figure out how to use that with heating up some takes even
Though it’s storage I I like the idea of having that be some type of machine that we’ve gone to in the past and so I’m I I’m scared of what kind of power you could bring with uh some old-fashioned hot takes via the microwave you never know let to see really
Don’t um we’ll see what happens all right let’s go to the Denver Nuggets loss here Doug because it was a surprising first half I thought they might give us a little bit of a Christmas treat in the first half the Denver Nuggets the reigning Champs yes
It was at home but that doesn’t mean anything Denver absolutely could have won this game could have won the first half even if it was in the Spectrum Center and then the Hornets went crazy cold Mike Malone after the game discussed them talk uh them calling
Three stops in a row a kill for Denver so anytime you get that it’s a kill right they had 17 straight stops in the third quarter and so they went on a killing spree in the third quarter Hornets don’t even reach double digits in the third only score nine and
Eventually that’s what leads uh to the Denver Nuggets 102 95 win so I mean only single digits at the end of this and they were ahead Doug in the first 24 minutes of AC but just couldn’t hold it down coming out of the locker room I love it I love Mike Malone getting
Creative there trying to reach his young players a lot of these young guys now they they get done playing their game and they go and play another game like Call of Duty and so you know trying to connect with the young guys getting a way to you know uh for them to acquire
Some kills get a killing streak uh get a drone strike I mean these guys that’s how look you’re trying to connect with them I I appreciate that creativity and yes the Hornets did get killed in that third quarter they missed 20 straight shots they did hit some free throws uh
But only hit two field goals in that third quarter but I want to focus on the positives because in that first half Walker they looked like the defensive team that Steve Clifford has been selling us that they could be that that all they had to do was change the the
The way they approached the game that it didn’t require weeks of practice that it was stuff that they could change in literally one day and they could be a team that could be competitive on the defensive end of the floor and they were and a lot of that credit goes to Nick
Richards who was a block shot machine in that first quarter had a a career tying High three blocks in that first quarter I think he tallied four overall and and he was doing it without fouling which is as uh you could ask Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors it’s tough to do
That with yic it’s tough to guard him without sending him to the line for 18 free throw attempts the Hornets Hornets somehow managed to do it now yes the the Nuggets had played a a lot of games and the Hornets were rested heading into that game it was the perfect kind of
Trap game scenario for the Denver Nuggets and the Hornets were almost able to take advantage of it and I wrote down in my every Hornets box score notes in the third quarter after they had gotten they got like three straight stops on the nuggets and I wrote down hey look
The Hornets aren’t getting blitzed in the third quarter that has happened a lot this season they come out and they let teams score all over them I was like oh it’s fine it’s great and then of course we know what happened in the third quarter they missed every shot and
They end up getting Blitz they go from up four at the half to down 15 could have been worse could have been down 20 down 25 heading into the fourth quarter and then the big story of the game Nick Smith Jr 19 points in the fourth quarter
Dragged them back into the game it wasn’t over and it was it was due to Nick Smith Jr great the the things you like to see colum Nick Smith Jr going five of seven from distance and just the fun shot making that he had because people want to see more Nick Smith Jr
But all the the threes that he made Doug got to the foul line and hit a couple of his free throws there even a couple of assists despite him not being the best passer in the world did get a couple of assists on his way to a 19point performance that’s certainly in the
Something uh you like to see column that nice something nice you like to see column and so we liked Nick Smith junr getting in these uh uh these minutes with we didn’t like you may have liked it I loved it he was he was pepperoni
Hot Pocket hot I mean it was you take the first bite and you go that’s how smoking hot he was and here’s the thing nobody else in the hornage was hot from three and especially after Brandon Miller left the game with an ankle injury after pton
Watson tried to block a shot and fell on top of him and and hurting hurting his ankle there there was no three-point shooting miles Bridges was awful from three in this game PJ Washington could not hit an open three to save his absolute life and I thought down 15
Nobody can hit threes this game is OV R over and then Nick Smith Jr I think we just saw a man start to earn a rotation spot I’m not saying it’s 100% solidified yet but I think you saw the beginnings of a rookie making his Mark to Steve
Clifford and saying look man you gotta you got to find some minutes for me now all right so let’s get some more Nick Smith Jr we’ll get to some other takes I just wanted to dispute your pepperoni Hot Pocket hot take I just the only reason I don’t like it is because yes
You’re right the the first three bites are burning hot but in the middle it’s ice cold like and so Nick Smith Jr there was nothing cold about his performance that’s why I don’t love the Hot Pocket reference but maybe it’s like the first half of your hot pocket no it’s per it’s
Perfect you know why because he sat in the microwave for so long that’s the thing you you put Nick Smith Jr in the microwave for the first three quarters and then you unleash him in the four and that’s what you get you’re just if if your pepperoni Hot Pocket is cold in
The middle then you’re microwaving wrong then you’re not microwaving it long enough no no because then it gets unbelievably I I like I like pizza roll hot just me I think pizza roll hot it explodes in your mouth it’s really hot but you can at least bear it and so hot
Pocket hot that’s just a little too cold in the middle we’ll move on pretty quickly because of that look on your face coming up next in the lockdown Hornets podcast don’t go to sleep on the Hornets just yet want to give a few other details as to what took place in

This Michael Scot report here Doug because here’s what Michael Scot had to say during the time that we had off quote the Hornets are headed for an eighth straight season in the lottery and there’s a strong belief that changes will be coming to Charlotte’s front office by next season at the latest
According to NBA Executives across the league who spoke with Hoops hype during the Mitch cup Che era the Hornets have lost both playin games they’ve appeared in never Advanced to the playoffs and only have one winning record in just one season so let’s just look at that part
First I’m not surprised at all I don’t know how much of this is reporting here Doug but I think we all anticipate some major overhaul as you have new ownership step into that position it’s something you see anytime new ownership steps into that position in any sport but
Especially with a franchise that has not been successful over the last five years at least with this regime at the helm and so I would imagine they’re GNA move on from Steve Clifford just how it’s going to be and I would imagine especially with the reports two years
Ago that Mitch cup not might might not have his contract renewed you know this would be the time for them to just move on yeah I think the most interesting thing are the two names and we’ve heard I think both of these names before but the fact that they’re they are persistent
Through these Scot Scoops love a good Scot drop love a good Scot scoop okay not as much as I love going fishing but Scott of scoop love his work here on on the Charlotte Hornets somebody paying attention to the Hornets franchise that’s always a good thing uh but Jeff
Peterson we we dug into him has some ties with the Spurs and is the so this is for GM just real quickly I didn’t read that part of it and so some names to keep an eye I don’t know if you were listening maybe not that’s okay some
Names to keep an eye on should Charlotte make a change in the front office is that a fine should that should that go in the FL bucket whenever I don’t listen dollar or if Mitch cup Che moves to a different role within the organization some of the names to keep an eye on
Include Net’s assistant GM Jeff Peterson as you were referring to and The Wizard senior vice president of player Personnel Travis schlink that’s what league sources told who type and so you can continue on with your Jeff Peterson and possibly Travis slink well I’m surprised you skipped it cuz that to me
That’s the juiciest part of took a break and then moved on I didn’t skip it I just said let’s I in fact I said let’s stop here before we move on to the names I I maybe not said the names but it doesn’t matter we’re we’re in regular
Season mold here it only takes five days to completely destroy our chemistry but here you go Doug what do you have on Jeff Peterson and Travis schlink well I think Peterson we’ve talked in depth about him for a young guy uh very creative guy I think you know I think
We’re we we could stand to have a younger voice in the front office at this point it would be a reaction to I think Mitch cupak who represents I think a more of an old school mindset uh possibly to possibly to his and his team’s detriment if you believe Lakers
Fans from Mitch Cup’s time there so and and schlink a young girlish I mean relative to cup Che youngish guy too and Travis schlank has a connection to Rick schn from their time together in Atlanta uh you might remember that schlink was an assistant GM for the Warriors he was
Instrumental at least according to reports he was instrumental in the Klay Thompson and Draymond picks he helped train up the eventual general manager and I think a name that a lot of hornets fans would like to hear in association with a possible GM opening Bob Meyers uh
But he did have some interesting stuff happened while he was with Atlanta he of course traded Luca donic for Trey young a lot of people are like maybe didn’t want to do that he didn’t want to trade for dejonte Murray though he did not want that Tandem and ultimately I think
That cost him his job with Atlanta and he was let go from the Hawks about a year ago along with I’m G to throw a name out there with you he was shown the door along with his senior director of talent W Rod Higgins who Bobcats fans
Yeah uh may remember as being a part of this organization so schn Gins schlank I I think these names to me engender a little bit of fear that we have not fully exited the Michael Jordan era if schlink ends up getting the job that there because schn is connected to
Jordan through like camps and know him a while like it just it doesn’t feel like this may be a full transition from the Jordan era right so you have the the Michael Jordan era tie you also have somebody coming from the Wizards organization that are one of a three a
Few teams that are worse than the Charlotte Hornets so not exactly ideal in what you see with a couple of the names listed you see Jeff Peterson and fair or not fair you might think oh yeah he’s coming from the Wizards organization they’ve made a lot of
Shrewd trades recently oh they have a lot of young Talent oh yeah they they’ve made a lot of good draft pick oh wait what have they done oh and then we’re going after somebody there yeah it it we don’t the fact is we really don’t know a
Lot about some of the these assistant GMS and what their input is on some of the decisions that they’ve made sometimes it’s leaked and sometimes it’s not and so who knows if these are a couple of the guys that would actually be in the final running if that day were
To come even though we all expected yeah I wonder too Doug with the whole Atlanta Hawks blueprint how they were able to get to a Conference Finals just a few years ago something that the Hornets have not been able to do and Travis schlank having been there traded Luca
Donic for Trey young really trading back while D Dallas traded up to go select Luca and the Hawks thought we can take all these assets on we don’t think Luca is going to be that much better than TR uh Trey young and so we’ll welcome him
There and you’re able to use Trey young as a star who did have that moment in the postseason and had enough surrounding talent to get to the Conference Finals and so there’s there’s something very similar there’s something that we’ve tried to copy and paste here in Charlotte at least in the content
Zone where we say Okay l is a point guard that’s a really good passer that’s also a really good shooter and this is a team that has not had a ton of success I know the Hawks have but maybe there’s some kind of small Market thing here
That you can copy and paste and say Okay lamelo can bring this team to a Conference Finals right like maybe that’s the thinking behind schlink and I just don’t know if that’s something that would be able to happen because it’s also you know the Hawks flaming out
Quite badly as you’re seeing continue on even post schlink era it’s going to be so interesting who they decide to go with because that that person coming in is going to have an interesting task at hand you’ve got a you know an All-Star potential player in lamelo ball that you
Need to surround with talent and yet the players around him I think there are serious questions about most of those players whether they uh really have a future in Charlotte and so you’ve got to find somebody who can tear down but at the same time build up because I
Don’t see the next couple of years for the Hornets being a full tear down we’re going to get bad and acquire assets I view it more as okay we’ve got to find ways to creatively move some of the young talent that we don’t want to necessarily wait on and and bring in
Some more veteran talents some some players that represent how that general manager and the potential new Coach View winning basketball in the Easter conference but you got to do those things at the same time uh so it’ll be a very interesting uh job for that new general manager when and if they make
That move and just to be clear too like yes there is the Michael Jordan tie but the easier like we we kind of skipped what the main tie is and the fact that Rick schn was a minority owner with the Atlanta Hawks organization during that
Run and so yeah like we can work a little harder to make the Michael Jordan tie in here which probably is true I don’t know what MJ would be saying but the easier stop along the way is just going to Rick schn having worked with schlink during his time with the Hawks
That’s probably the easier one to roll with but it’s not as spicy you got a microwave now we need to heat things up I just I can’t do another Higgins I can’t I’m sorry I cannot do another I can’t do a Cory Higgins I cannot do a
Rod I just cannot do another Higgins please yeah oh yeah Cory too there’s too much Bobcats trauma that we must we must avoid at all costs if they welcome Cory Higgins back then I think we’ll have a big old issue and know that MJ has to be
A part of this some way somehow let’s go to one more segment give you injury updates and more thoughts on the Nuggets loss coming up next on the lockdown Hornets podcast don’t go to sleep on the Hornets just yet what are the updates on Brandon Miller even Terry roier not
Suiting up for this game against uh Denver is he even ready to go against the Clippers the next game on the schedule we’ll get to that in just a moment in the last segment of lockdown Hornets this episode is brought to you by game

Game time app create an account use code locked on NBA for $20 off your first purchase one more segment to go locked on Hornets all right Doug let’s go through the injuries here because as always this is this is just what we have to do watching the Hornets these days so
If you go to Hornets PR Terry roier actually not on the injury report for this game that they have today against the Clippers yeah Brandon Miller is questionable with that right ankle injury he suffered against Denver early on would leave the game would not return which really hurt them of course because
Brandon has been one of their better players this entire season but Brandon is questionable for this one Mark Williams lower back contusion can you guess what designation they gave him Doug just take a wild guess what he is coming into this game well I doubt I’m gonna get this wrong I think it’s
Doubtful uh that is correct he is doubtful once more and Josh Lloyd who we’ve mentioned for a second time now is hot about it he is not happy okay please give him any other designation than doubtful just say this say he’s going to be out and he’ll be a lot happier and I
Can understand his pain Lamela ball also out with that right ankle injury Frank Nina also out with the left tibia injury where do you want to go here Doug what injury do you want to go with because Terry not in the injury report Brandon questionable and lamelo at least making
Progress but not going to suit up against the Clippers no but it seems like he’s getting closer and closer I mean I would not be surprised if in maybe they wait until the end of this road trip they don’t they don’t you know showcase lamelo through this very
Difficult West Coast road trip that they have but when they come back home in uh I think a little over a week you know that I think could be one of those games you watch for lamelo to start coming off of the out and moving into the questionable at that point so that’s
Very encouraging I think if the Hornets had had Terry Rosier in that game against Denver they would have won I don’t think they’re going I don’t think they’re missing their first 20 shots in the third quarter and uh then you get Cody Martin back as well so this team is
Starting to get healthier now will they start to play better that’s that’s a big question because even Clifford was like look we got to get guys back and then once we get all the guys back then we got to find a way to play because you
Haven’t had your you know the main part of your rotation really all season and and going back to last season as well they have not really figured out a way for your top you know nine or 10 guys to to play together and so that that’s
Going to be a process it was encouraging to see Cody Martin back out there he had a couple of nice fakes to get open layups or at least open shots around the rim defensively it seems like he’s still a little step slow kind of getting his rhythm back figuring all that out but
Once he comes online you might get Frank NE Lina back in the next couple of weeks the Hornets will really start we’ll see like hey is this experiment you know because to me the question is not are they going to make the playin are they going to make
The playoffs to me the question is is this experiment with all of these draft assets that they’ve accumulated over the years is that experiment worth extending into next season with or without Steve Clifford with or without Mitch cjack is the experiment with the players worth exploring for another season or should
There be movement in terms of Miles Bridges PJ Washington Gordon Hayward possibly Terry Rosier as well and I’ll tell you man PJ Washington Gordon Hayward and Miles Bridges did not really give me uh much evidence that that that experiment should continue based on that Nuggets game because I thought those
Three players really failed to step up in the third quarter in the fourth you had to have Nick Smith Jr play as well as he did because it wasn’t just the Miss shots it was turnovers bad inbounds they had a 5sec call again with Gordon Hayward taking the ball out it was turn
Turnovers I mean you know you you want to look at your three relatively veteran players and say hey can those guys step up in those moments when we need them two most and in this game at least they failed to do so well and and also it’s
Because it’s it’s just too hard for them given their skill level if you don’t have lamelo ball and you don’t have Terry roier you have ish Smith coming in as your best point guard option who was about to retire this off season and Terry after having made such a leap this
Season not being available either you know he he wasn’t even a great option as that lead guard last year but at least he was good enough but now you don’t have him unexpectedly clearly no lamelo is gonna hurt this team and so Gordon Hayward probably your next best option
As a halfcourt primary distributor outside of ish leading the way but Gordon’s over 30 and it was it was not ideal it almost like maybe that helped give Denver 13 17 kills I’m sorry 17 straight stops and almost six kills if you want to go with Michael Malone uh uh terminology yeah
Nick Smith he can come in and he has to save him by hitting all of the shots from Deep that’s what saved them in this game as you’ve mentioned so many times so if you want to go to what these guys roles are best suited for Miles Bridges
Is the one that maybe you could have expected it’s the it’s the most logical place to go we need offensive takeover from one player when lamelo and Terry goes down the next capable guy of doing that it’s miles he didn’t do it he was two of 11 in the second half didn’t step
Up PJ was hot in the first half he finishes six of 20 because he missed so many shots in the second but in the first half he was hitting those shots he just didn’t have it for four quarters he did give you six stocks four steals the
Second game in last three where he’s had a career high in steals gave you a couple of blocks as well but PJ is not going to be the guy that you want to depend on offensively Gordon’s too old and so this is just another case of the injury bug hurting
The Hornets once more and yeah like I I think if you were to ask okay who’s the guy that isn’t stepping up as much it’s it’s miles that that that’s the logical place to go when your top two players are down to go to your third best player
Which is Miles Bridges it maybe maybe it’s true that it’s still taken them a while to get into the Rhythm because it’s been a long time since he’s played a game because of his own doing but that is what it is right now and it took Nick
Smith Jr coming in red hot in order to even give them a chance in the fourth quarter he was two of 12 from three in this game miles Bridges cleaning the glass has him in the 26 percentile among NBA forwards in three-point shooting his overall points per shot attempt is below
Average he’s still missing a number of shots at The Rim when he goes ISO I he can get to the rim with these but he’s just not not hitting those shots particularly well and PJ Washington also struggling from three he’s in the 27th percentile among players at his position
From three it’s not great and you wonder like can PJ Washington find a rhythm we know he can find a rhythm without lamelo because he did it last season but he did it as a featured offensive piece he did it as a starter can he find a rhythm Off
The Bench I think that’s a still a big question mark and Bridges who is going to be looking for some team whether it be the Hornets or another team to take a a chance on him in the offseason and give him the contract that he wanted the Hornets to
Give him this past off season and the Hornets were unwilling to do that um you know he’s he has a chance here and a few games remaining to say hey I can be that kind of piece without I don’t you know I don’t necessarily need lamelo ball to be
That kind of offensive weapon I mean so so far he has not not really showcased that looks like it looks like he needs lamelo Ball even his like his biggest Defenders online will say well yeah but lamelo ball is not around but it’s like when he goes to get that next contract
Is that what he’s gonna say he like well I need that kind of player no you you want to say I’m that dude I’m that guy yeah it it does it does separate the decision- making going forward because it as much as as much as I think Gordon
Can help this team MoneyWise I don’t want to bring him back at a big figure and and even lump PJ Washington into this category those two guys need lamelo to be at their best PJ even further down than Gordon in a halfcourt set like PJ is just somebody I don’t trust 100% with
The basketball in his hands I want him to be out in the perimeter spotting up if he’s going to take a couple dribbles then take just a couple quite at most and then that’s it Gordon I do trust the basketball in his hands but leading the
Offense I don’t I want him to have it when you throw it and then he can run a pick and with somebody and then create out of that or just get to his spot and then shoot an elbow jumper miles is the one to go to and at at a big figure
Right because that that’s who gets paid the big bucks PJ’s Washington’s contract here it okay it’s fine Gordon is about to come off so it’s not that really big of a deal miles is too but if you wanted to bring miles back from a basketball standpoint then he’s going to be asking
For I would think a lot of money and it’s because you want him to be that lead guy if injuries are a problem and so that that’s the problem right that that’s the logical explanation if if you’re talking about guys that are performing to the level of their
Contract and Miles gets something to the tune of over 20 million then miles would you say that he’s doing that here you know he did have three blocks and two steals that’s nice like I I’ll definitely take that but and and rebounding he is a good rebounder but
Man offense is what we need from him that that’s what you need here when those guys are out and hopefully they can just get healthy and everybody can play their role that’s what you would like to see everybody playing their role as intended and it just hasn’t happened
Enough the last two seasons anywhere any way shape or form well and the problem and here’s where I I will come to miles’s defense a little bit here is that from a from a basketball perspective at least uh that everyone’s role keeps changing that yes yes I mean
All over the place and PJ too like PJ goodness gracious he like what are you going to do with him is schmith now is having to start for this team how Brandon Miller even when he’s in there all right now we got to change the guy
That’s only played 20 games in his NBA career we got to change his role that that’s what’s tough about all of this it’s not easy for anybody it’s not and so that’s that’s true of Miles PJ whoever you want to bring up to the table it’s true for him I’ve got a
Couple of other observations from this game if you’d like them very quickly before we yeah let’s do rapid fire yep uh it looks like Brandon Miller is starting the draw charge Revolution with the charl Hornets haven’t seen a guy draw charges like Brandon Miller has since Kima Walker was on this team uh
This team is just not known for sacrificing the body you need because you need a couple of things to draw a charge right I mean you need awareness you need understanding like how a play is developing when a guy’s going to drive all the way to the rim and then
You know getting your body in position but you also have to have a willingness cuz that that thing hurt when when big guys are driving that quickly and you got to hit the floor like you’ve got to be able to be willing to sacrif rifice your body and we’ve seen Brandon Miller
Do it but in this game Nick Smith Jr uh took a charge ish tried to take a charge they called it a block look I think this happened in the end of the first quarter or early second and Steve Clifford challenged the block charge call it
Didn’t go the Hornets way they lost the challenge there were multiple instances in the end of the fourth quarter that the Hornets really needed a challenge and didn’t have it if you are going to challenge in the first half you must be sure you must be a 100% sure that you
Are going to retain that challenge and if not it’s coaching malpractice you you cannot lose your you could look if you challenge something in the second half if you challenge something in the third quarter and you lose it okay you know whatever fourth quarter certainly first and second quarter uhuh that’s bad you
Cannot lose your challenge then yeah all right I’m with you I’m with you on that and Steve Clifford has been pretty good this year if I’m not mistaken at at the challenging of plays I think so far but yeah that one was one that you need to get right all right
That’ll do it for lockon Hornets thanks for making us your first listen as you do every day we’re free and available anywhere you get your podcast and that includes YouTube we will recap the game tomorrow or the game tonight tomorrow if that makes sense they play the Clippers
Yeah it doesn’t make any sense I understand that they play the Clippers tonight and we’ll be back to recap it hopefully they can navigate through some of the health problems and we’ll see what they’re able to do against La we’ll be back to recap it all have a great rest of your day
Walker and Doug return from break to recap the Charlotte Hornets loss to the Denver Nuggets. Nick Smith Jr. was the standout in the 4th but what in the bleep happened in the 3rd quarter? The guys go over the latest reports on possible front office changes then reheat some Nuggets takes from the first segment. Can you realistically ask these guys to play so many roles?
