Not the prettiest but gotta be one of the best wins so far. This feels like the type of win that contributes to a winning culture even for a rebuilding team. Love seeing the guys have fun.

Pulling that gritty win when we couldn’t hit anything from 3 was huge.

Shoutout to Sexton and Olynyk for keeping us alive in that otherwise woeful 1st half. And also to Tec for the defense. That 4th quarter by Keynote made me excited, looked super confident taking those 3’s.

GAME NOTES:
What a close game for all 48 minutes. I think until the fourth quarter the largest lead was 5 by either team. Our bench was the reason we won the game.
Our defense played really well. We defended the paint, and stopped the Heat from getting open looks from deep. We allowed them the mid range, but that’s modern day NBA analytics for ya.
For the players, Kelly Olynyk is the MVP tonight. He was cooking all game long, 19 points, 8-12 shooting, 6 rebounds (3 offensive), 10 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers all in 28 minutes. He doesn’t necessarily have a gravity when he is driving or backing somebody down, but it feels like the rest of our guys feel comfortable cutting to the rim when he is the ball handler. He is easily the best passer on the team, and it seems like the rest of the team knows that he will find you on your cut or if you’re open. His shotmaking and slow motion way of playing is unique and fun to watch.
Collin Sexton has continued his tear. 20 points, 8-14 shooting, 1-4 from 3, 3-4 from the line, 5 assists, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, 3 turnovers. He was the only starter who was able to score, which made our starting unit kind of a rough watch. Sexton is starting to make the argument that this is also his team, and it isn’t just Markkanen’s. Great play from him recently on both ends of the floor.
Keyonte George also dropped a 20-burger tonight. 21 points, 6-10 shooting, 5-8 from 3, 4-5 from the line, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 turnovers in 27 minutes tonight. Probably the best shooting night he has had this season. I’m hoping he can figure out his playmaking again, as it seems like he can’t have both at the same time; either he has a good scoring/shooting night, or he has a good playmaking night. Regardless, I’m sure it feels great for him to see his shots go down at a great rate tonight.
Lauri Markkanen struggled terribly. 4-13, 1-8 from 3, 3-4 from the line. 12 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals. His defense on Bam was pretty good, although Bam had 20 free throw attempts. He started at the 4 with Collins at the 5 tonight, and struggled scoring with Jimmy Butler guarding him. Credit to Jimmy for stopping Lauri, but ultimately I just don’t think today was Lauri’s day. He missed quite a few wide open 3’s, and even some shots at the rim that he usually hits. I’m not worried though, the rest of the team stepped up.
Walker Kessler had another great game, this time off the bench. 10 points, 5-5 shooting, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks. +10 in 23 minutes tonight for the Sheriff. I don’t know why he isn’t starting, or why he is playing 18-25 minutes a night, and I don’t know if I should be concerned. He plays hard, and seems to be fairly consistent defensively night-to-night, especially since he came back from his injury 10ish games or so ago. I wish I knew why Hardy doesn’t start him every game, and why his minutes are so few considering he is one of the more impactful players on our team.
Jordan Clarkson another bad shooting night. 9 points on 10 shots (3-10, 1-5 from 3), 2 rebounds, 3 assists. 0 turnovers though! Even on bad shooting nights, he has great gravity and was able to find some open men for shots around the perimeter. I like that he is more open to passing instead of going up over 2 guys, but I want to see him being more willing to swing the ball on the perimeter. There was one play that frustrated me in the second quarter where we had a 5 on 4 fastbreak, but Clarkson brought the ball up and made no effort to find the open guy. Instead, he drove inside and put up a bad layup over 2 guys. Hopefully his shooting comes back, but for tonight he was able to take care of the ball despite his poor shooting.
Agbaji didn’t make any offensive impact tonight, but did have a huge block on a Herro dunk attempt. That’s pretty much the only noteworthy thing he did. He still hustles on every play, and is pretty aware of spacing which is good. Just missed his shots, going 0-4, 0-3 from 3, and 0-2 from the line. Still a +1 in 15 minutes.
Kris Dunn started at PG tonight, and in 18 minutes put up 2 points, 1-5 shooting, 6 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. Just 1 turnover tonight. Although he had a poor shooting night, he contrasts really well with Sexton in the starting lineup. I think that Hardy found his guard rotation. Although Dunn & Sexton start, Keyonte & Clarkson are the main guards. Dunn & sexton usually perform really well in the starting lineup together.
Collins struggled up until the fourth quarter, where he hit 2 big 3’s to shift the momentum in our favor. 10 points on 4-11 shooting, 2-6 from 3, 6 rebounds in 21 minutes. I would rather start Kelly & Kessler and bring Collins off the bench, but I’m not the head coach. Collins has struggled recently.
Fontecchio played a solid game. 12 points, 4-9, 1-5 from 3, and 3-6 from the line, but 7 rebounds (3 offensive), 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block tonight. I thought his defense was really good, and his ability to get to the rim was impressive too. He didn’t show fear going into the paint against Bam or Butler.
Terrible shooting night as a team, shooting splits of 46/26/71, but we took care of the ball (10 turnovers vs 16), and we stopped Miami from getting easy buckets. Like I said, no team really pulled away at any point tonight, with it being close all game. The officiating was terrible, 68 combined free throws with Bam getting 20 free throws tonight, but a win is a win. Great victory, Kelly, Sexton, & Keyonte played incredibly well today.
Great team ball. 7 players in double figures, 10 turnovers as a team, 29 assists as a team, and some solid defense all around. Despite some poor shooting from deep that plagued us all game, we were able to figure out how to shift and still get some buckets.
14-19!

Huge win for us! Lauri had a small impact in this game and we still pulled it off. Great job everyone!
KO might really want to get out of Utah with what he was showing tonight, looked great.

Great win tonight! I just hope Haywood Highsmith is alright…that was gnarly to watch him fall to the floor like that….

The Raptors saved us from potentially mega-embarrassing ourselves on January 3 against the Pistons!
We could still get embarrassed, but at least it won’t be of the ending-the-longest-losing-streak-in-history variety.

Where’s everyone who was shitting on Sexton?
I’m so glad he’s figuring it out and playing well. Yeah it did take a minute, but he’s got it. Between that and his seemingly limitless energy, I am *still* high on the kid.

And a Pistons win is a huge relief for a couple games from now!
