Chauncey Billups Postgame Interview | Portland Trail Blazers 134, San Antonio Spurs 128 | Dec. 29

What you can say about like the growth that he’s displayed the last couple of years shoot man he’s he’s come a long way um you know uh we we we spent a lot of time talking about bar this year just based on how far he’s come you know um I

Use him at the four I use him at the five um he just kind of does his job and he does it very well you know but I just thought you know playing small in this game was going to be a big deal you know uh we were so much scrappier you know

When we able to play that way and you don’t lose any rebounding when you put bar out there because he’s such a good rebounder you know that’s the one thing you scared of when you play smaller is the rebounding thing um you lose some sides but you don’t use you don’t lose

The the toughness in rebounding when Bar’s out there so I just thought he gave us a great lift and that was incredible second quarter defense that we played I thought after you know you know trading baskets with him in the first quarter and it was the unit that

He was on out there that I thought was so good and um I just made the change at at halftime felt it was the best lineup for us matis uh Kamar and Walker were out there what do you like about when those three guys are out there well you you know we usually

Switch a lot when we’re doing that um and we’re able to I think speed teams up speed guys up at times when that group is out there VI L they’re all really good Defenders you know but they can get in those passing lanes and um you know

That’s the way that we need to play when you know most of our offense is sitting on the bench in Street closed you know so we we have to try to play that way Chelsea the postgame last night all right the Lo game last night uh baji

Mentioned that uh Zack Collins on a finger roll that he blocked better not come so soft and he gets the block on Zach when he checks back in tonight and and it kind of ignited not just the guys on the floor but the whole bench and you

All of a sudden see scoop get a block and you see Barry come over what does it mean to have a kind of a defensive playmaker at that big spot that can kind of give you that spark well it’s a big deal you know um as you see you know how

Loud those plays become with with big EO down there um one everybody’s just so happy to have them out there and you could just see that you know um so that’s one thing and then not only having them out there but having them play well and make plays um it just it

Ignites us you know but to have a guy back there like that is just it’s it’s a big deal you know when we’ve struggled this year um with keeping people and teams away from the basket you know we struggled in that area so if team if

Guys can get there and then we got you know big big boy back there racing some shots um it makes a big deal for us you going to try to find a way to keep him in the rotation at Le somewhat when Da and W come back we just have to see man

You know you can only play so many guys so we’ll just have to see you know when we get everybody back you know you obviously there’s going to be several guys that don’t play that are not in rotation but I think for me it’s just

Good to know um that I can trust you know going away from the normal rotation at times uh to other guys so that’s the most important part of it is I think in anything you know you have to get the staff and the head coach to trust you

When you’re out there um so games like this are a big deal for that what does it mean for a guy like at least in your mind to see a I like scoot it’s the first game where he gets multiple threes off the bouns to go for him but he also

Gets the show not only as a playmaker just making the right read but showing the passing creativity the the rap skip to T on the Run the you know Corner Pocket being able to find those skip passes showing the the passing versatility as opposed to the A to B

Passing kind of seeing both those things come together in the same game well what you’re seeing is uh you seeing what experience does you know just getting him out there um that pass was incredible I mean the Reed was incredible it was you know you’re getting you’re seeing him now starting

To play free and loose um and let the game kind of just happen out there as opposed to thinking it before it happens just let it happen so you seeing the game um you know kind of slow down for Scoot a little bit and uh it will

Continue to do that but I’m just loving his Ascension man I mean every single game he’s continuing to get better and you know like the last game he had a tough first quarter had a really good three quarters after that I thought he played a complete game the whole night

Today you know he played a great game um I thought defensively he was tough as heck you know he’s going in there getting tough man grown man rebounds um diving on the floor for a little that’s just who he is man you know um so I was

Happy I was happy for him today and today I felt like was a really really good opportunity to learn about my team coming off of that yesterday you know um and it was just a really tough first quarter and we fought and just couldn’t do it and then playing the same

Team um obviously without their best player but doesn’t even matter it’s a basketball game and it’s hard to win in this league so it it it was an opportunity for for us to learn about one another you know and I was just so happy and proud of what we were able to

Do do you think that was scoot’s most polished performance or is that tough to say um probably so probably so but you know he’s had a couple really good wire to wire games but I think that was probably his best um just all around you think is you have any sense

Of whether da and M are going to be good for the road trip sh it’s a long road trip so I’m hoping that we we get some guys back on it but um I’m just not sure when to be honest with you

  1. We need to get a real coach in Portland and let this assistant coach find a role more his skill level, Billups is trash and it shows so much in the 4th when he has no killer instinct to close out games proper as he tries to give it away constantly with his far too early slow down choices. Can’t wait till the team sells and an actual invested in winning owner sets us up for success cause that’s when you’ll see these young bucks really shine. Let’s go RipCity!!
