Detroit Pistons “Sell the Team” chants DIFFERENT than Oakland A’s fans

Here’s Brody Brazil you know whenever I think about professional sports in Detroit one common theme always comes to mind and that is they somehow put together teams that are very difficult to beat and I’m not saying that the Red Wings or the Lions or the tigers or the Pistons that

They always win the championship certainly they don’t I’m not even here to say that they always even have a winning record obviously that doesn’t always happen either it’s just that whenever you the opposition go up against Detroit it always feels like you’re in for a true battle I think that’s a respectable

Thing to say about the pro sports franchises they have except for this season and the Pistons who just set a brand new NBA single season record they just lost 27 in a row in fact here we are with just a couple days left in the calendar year of 2023 they haven’t won a

Game since before Halloween this has been quite the unprecedented run for Pistons fans and like I said they’re not used to this in Detroit and certainly this Pistons team has struggled in recent years and in fact now for more than a decade but not to this degree and it’s got fans now in

This spot where lately at games in fact this has happened twice within the last couple weeks fans have done this at the end of Pistons games [Applause] [Applause] OHA that was going on for quite some time and did you hear at the beginning it was almost like that drum beat sound

Effect I I know whoever was playing that in the arena at Little Caesar’s Arena they didn’t mean to cause that chant I don’t think but it certainly certainly led to that sell the team chant which oh I know you’re watching this channel you’re aware of the Oakland A and the

Summer they just had and that chant that their fans kind of brought to life over a handful of different games in fact even more than that but we’ll we’ll get to the A’s correlation in just a second that’s at the end of the Pistons 27th loss in a row that was against the

Brooklyn Nets there’s certainly a large enough crowd there to be that loud uh make no mistake about it that wasn’t a small group of fans I wanted to show you this video specifically from the Detroit news that I thought reflected the chant that actually happened and now what I’m thinking is at

Least the second time this has happened lately so why are fans why are fans cross right now what what what is the deal with Detroit and the Pistons and what’s been happening we need to take a look at their recent history and you can kind of segment it

Following the 2008 2009 season since then they’ve been in the playoffs three times which is not a lot and they’ve had three first round exits they’ve never won a playoff series since 2008 2009 now if you look at the many years prior to that they were on a tear they were a

Team that would always get to the Eastern finals they’ go multiple rounds in playoffs for multiple straight years so they had a large portion of success it seemed like they paid their price of winning for a handful of years in the late 2000s early 2010s but they just

Never got back on track in that span since 0809 they’ve had six different head coaches and here’s the other thing I’ll say about the Pistons as we just kind of do a a broad Strokes study of their team they’re typically a bottom third spender of NBA payrolls across the

League but in certain years they’ve also been top 10 like seventh in the league I want to say in 2017-8 so they’re not afraid to spend but let me also say this and NBA spending is generally a lot more sandwiched in than any other sport all the team well except for hockey because

There’s a hard salary cap but in the NBA spending between teams usually is only a couple million dollars apart and maybe 20 or $30 million apart for most teams kind of in the middle of the pack the point is to say that the Detroit Pistons it doesn’t seem like they are

Intentionally trying to put themselves in this position now the chant sell the team obviously directed at ownership and if you’re going to start pointing fingers while the Pistons fans they seem to be going right to the top which is crazy right because over the years there have been multiple head coaches there

Have been multiple general managers so they’re now taking their attention towards ownership Tom goris has owned the Pistons since 2011 he’s a Michigan native I believe that’s a michigander if I’m saying that right uh so has you know some very deep connections into Detroit in the Michigan region he brought the

Team downtown you remember they used to play at the Palace of Auburn Hills but since 2011 the late 2010s they made that move to Little Caesar’s Arena alongside the Detroit Red wi so put them right back downtown with all the other sports teams the Tigers over at Comer and the

Lions over at fordfield it’s not that far away it’s just like right across the the highway there right near hockey town and also recently uh Tom goris has instituted a g-league team for the uh for to be the the Pistons affiliate in Detroit so he’s added the g-league of

The NBA’s essentially minor league to Detroit so all things like looked at here at least from what I know and and if I’m wrong here please do let me know in the comments fans are upset mostly not because of maybe what’s entirely been happening with the business side of

The Pistons it’s just that they don’t win games I guess I should have made that point earlier if we’re really trying to break down what Pistons fans are upset about it’s just that their team has not won in a long time and right now they’re on an embarrassing

Losing streak now I want to say these things do happen but not to this degree 27 straight games you would think that that was largely avoidable somehow somewhere along the way to let this streak continue but here we are 27 straight losses another team that’s probably going to flirt with NBA regular

Season history and the amount of losses that they will collect but if it’s just that and they want to sell the team just because they’re not winning or they can’t turn it around or there must be a reason that I don’t understand of why they’re pointing at ownership here other than

Maybe that’s been the constant since he took over in 2011 they’ve never really found sustained success so Tom gorus did a pre Christmas media availability with select media that he did this virtually over one of the platforms you name it and one of the questions was asked from the

Pistons uh beat writers their selected media how does it feel when fans are chanting quote sell the team here was his response quote they can say what they want but that’s ridiculous other than winning and we should win more games we do a lot in the community players the organization we do

A lot in the community if you put aside the winning we’ve made a very big difference in the community that means a lot to me I understand that’s only going to mean a lot to people if we win but the underw workking of what’s happening and with our community over all these

Years is there we’re doing multi-billion dollar things outside of basketball I understand the fans being upset but it is a ridiculous thought okay so here’s the point where I start to put together the Pistons situation and how their fans feel versus what Oak A’s fans have been going

Through and I don’t think Oakland A’s fans ever used that chant until it was obvious that the team was trying to relocate like literally trying to take their slogan of rooted in Oakland and uproot themselves from it I also don’t know in Detroit if there is that direct

Tension between ownership and the front office and the fans of well the blame game you didn’t show up for games so we couldn’t spend on our team and now we’re looking to do something drastic like the Pistons are only literally at the spot where they’re just not winning they just

Don’t have the right people maybe it is surface level as that in Detroit with the Pistons because with the Oakland A’s it is not as surface level as that the blame game and what’s happened over years and decades and all the things that have brought us to this point where

You know relocation has been approved by basball and Public Funding is in place for the A’s to move to Las Vegas the sell the team chant with A’s fans came out of necessity it feels like what Pistons fans are doing here is just simply coming out of frustration now

It’s not to minimize how Pistons fans feel losing that much for that long I get it it makes you crazy a little bit makes you do irrational things I’m also not saying that they are irrational for having those thoughts and feelings but I guess the entire point of this video If

I Could sum it up here for you at the very end the A’s chance and the Pistons chance from their fans they’re about two totally different scenarios from what I can understand here one has a lot more weight to it than the other no disrespect Pistons fans you made it here

At the end of the video you know I appreciate that Thumbs Up Down Below also don’t forget subscribe to the channel so I can definitely see you back here next time

Brooklyn Nets 118, Detroit Pistons 112.

It was Detroit’s 27th straight loss — the Pistons now have the record for most consecutive losses in one season. Detroit is one loss short of tying the NBA’s all-time consecutive loss streak at 28 (the 76ers across the 2014-15 seasons).

Next up for Detroit is the Boston Celtics on Thursday, followed by the Raptors on Saturday. However, there will be no easy games for Detroit now as teams will be focused when facing the Pistons — nobody wants to be the first team to lose to Detroit since Oct. 28.

  1. Why doesn't he sell the team and then use some of the proceeds for the community? (And the new owner can concentrate on building a winner)

  2. Brodie, Bay Area transplant living in Detroit. One of the big issue is that Gores refuses to make changes that need to be made. If this was everyone else, you'd have fired the coach, GM and everyone in between. Gores flew in from Beverly Hills, went to the press and said, in essence, "something is wrong but we won't fix it." did nothing, and then flew out.

And yes, he's a Michigander (from Flint).

  3. Are players in the NBA even coachable these days? I watched Jordan win his last championship in person (salt lake city) but would rather go to a dentist appointment than an NBA game these days…. MLB deserves credit for making the game better…. NBA is a 💩-show.

  4. It's been some years since I lived in Detroit, or even Michigan at all, but I still kind of follow events there. It seems to me that I remember reading that the Ilich family, who own the Tigers and Red Wings, made a play for the Pistons a few years ago. (The Iliches own the Little Ceasars Pizza places, which is why the arena is called that.) Obviously they weren't successful, but it could be that this period makes present ownership reconsider a sale.

  5. As a pistons fan, I'd rather have John Fisher as an owner. Tom Gores is a succession character. Unlike Fisher, he has the money to get things done. He doesn't take winning seriously and doesn't show up to games. He likes the idea of winning but is incompetent. I'm hearing reports that they're going to be buyers. Like wtf. Who are we trading to be able to buy? He'll sacrifice this teams future for players who are UFA's that won't resign here. Mike Valenti on 97.1 the ticket has been destroying him. And how does doing a lot in the community amount to Wins?

  6. This is definitely an apples/oranges comparison but I also believe a misguided and uninformed comparison. Yes, the way A's fans have been treated by ownership is beyond reprehensible, but the Pistons situation is bad for different reasons. The owner is largely absentee, usually only showing himself for charity photo ops. He continues to employ people in the front office that have shown to be bad at their jobs because they are his people. His GM has built a roster that cannot play in today's NBA but he has shown no real desire to actually do something about it. The move downtown was about money and nothing else, just like everything else he does (even though he rents Little Caesar's Arenas and has no ownership of it). And his recent comments to the media show absolute contempt for the fans/customers of the "community" he pretends to care about. He is demonstrating that the people of Detroit should be grateful for his presence and his tax write-offs (er, I mean charitable contributions) and view that the fact that the Pistons have the worst record in all of the NBA during his time as owner as a minor concern. Basically this guy is Donald Sterling and Dean Spanos rolled into one package and he would be doing the fans a favor if he just got his billion for selling and let someone who cares own the team.
And BTW, when someone follows their comments with "no disrespect", they know they just disrespected people. Be better Brodie, and perhaps do some research before assuming you know.

  7. Of course the Piston and A’s sell the team chants are different. As we experienced in Sacramento, the Association doesn’t pander to delinquent ownership, like MLB does. The association forces them out.

  8. Brodie, if you were a betting man, what are the chances that the San Jose Earthquakes become the first MLS team in Las Vegas based upon the current owner?

  9. The real problem with the nba is it needs to contract by 5-10 teams. Contract the pistons, wizards, hornets, hawks, magic, pacers, grizzlies, pelicans, no one will care

  10. I disagree.
I don't think these franchises are too far apart. One major difference– the Pistons play in a relatively new, well regarded building.

Might the A's be in a better position had they been playing in Oracle Park 8 years ago?

  11. I am a fan of the Angels. I’ve been watching your content for about a year now. My Podcast has been banging the drum that Arte Moreno should sell the Angels for years. I would say that the angels have the best argument that ownership needs to sell. Our reasons are almost as valid as Oakland.

  12. You’re going to see more of these “Sell The Team!” Chants throughout many sports fan bases that are fed up with their team’s ownership not investing in putting out a winning roster to compete. Besides not paying for tickets/ merchandise, etc.. the only other way to express frustration to ownership is to start this chant as a rallying cry. Many sports ownership groups don’t really spend their teams’ money to compete or put out a winning type of culture but rather instead invest to making more profit that benefits only themselves.

As a Seattle Mariners fan, we see our owner John Stanton (like the previous owners Nintendo group / Howard Lincoln) were mainly all about profits, not investing on improving the ballclub, especially when they have a roster built to compete for the playoffs.

The A’s fanbase started Sell The Team chants as a way to voice frustration to ownership. While I get it is very different than the Detroit Pistons situation, one thing is clear… fans also have a say regarding Billionaire owners that just collect $$$

  13. Stupid of Pistons giving that crazy contract to coach Williams. They may have to eat it.

  14. I don't think the Detroit Pistons have ever signed a big name free agent.
Btw the Pistons and the Red Wings moved into that little Ceasers arena in 2017, not 2011.

  15. A's fans chanting is definitely more tied to just trying to keep the team. When it comes to winning, that definitely can change within an ownership group. Prime example I can think of: the 49ers. Jed and the Yorks went from reviled when DeBartolo surrendered the team to them to beloved during the Harbaugh years to reviled at the end of the Baalke era to beloved (or at least an afterthought) during the Lynch and Shanahan era. Aside from having a venue that fans want to visit, I think all fans really want from an owner is to hire someone capable of building a contender and just stay out of the way when it comes to on the field stuff. Just sign the checks (spend money) and accept the trophy when the team wins. If an owner can just do that and stay out of trouble, I don't think fans really care who the owner is for the most part

  16. What’s interesting is that Detroit is seen as a ghetto town that has lost a lot of population, yet no one seems to want their teams to relocate. Yet Oakland is seen as this ghetto town that should not have pro teams. Why is that? Is it because if Oakland teams leave, there will still be representation in the Bay Area in SF & or South Bay?

  17. As a lifelong Michigan resident, I can tell you there is actually a somewhat heated debate over whether we should be called "Michiganders" or "Michiganians," and some still argue for "Michiganites." I personally prefer "Michigander" (as I believe most of us do), but I can handle "Michiganite." "Michiganian," on the other hand, just sounds awkward IMO. And yes, the Tigers are my primary MLB team, though I'm paying close attention to the As Vegas developments right now (on this channel and others) because it's a potentially earth-shaking event for all of pro sports.

It seems pretty straightforward to me that the demands for Gores to sell the Pistons are different from the demands for Fisher to sell the As. While both owners are clearly tanking their teams, Gores isn't trying to relocate the Pistons like Fisher is with the As. Whether one is more valid than the other is a matter of opinion, but they still aren't the same.

  18. It's completely different because there's no chance of the Pistons leaving Detroit. The NBA won't allow teams to relocate anymore since Adam Silver became commissioner. Owners can come and go, but teams can't.

  19. Being a Michigander living in Metro Detroit, from what I hear talking to other fans and read locally, a majority of Pistons fans see Gores as a carpetbagger owner. Yeah, he's from Michigan, but he now lives in Los Angeles and just sees the Pistons as another one of his investments and does not care whether they win or lose (although you would think if the Pistons were winning it would mean more fans attending games and better TV ratings for ad revenue). Gores flies in once in a while but is rarely seen in Detroit in person, again adding to perception he just doesn't care. An absentee owner, if you will. There is a very small number of fans who think he wants to move the team to Las Vegas to be closer to him and have the NBA award an expansion to Detroit keeping the Pistons name, etc… (like one theory about the A's and Vegas- with Oakland keeping A's branding and history as an expansion team and Vegas getting the A's franchise) but most fans think that theory is very farfetched in regard to the Pistons. On another note, I think it's a travesty what MLB has allowed Fisher to do to Oakland fans and the A's franchise. I have watched old Tigers at A's games from the late 1980's on YouTube and the Coliseum was packed! Facts are fans support a winner or at least owners who seem to care about their franchises. Right now, that is something the Pistons and A's have in common with the perception of their respective team's competitiveness and ownerships.
