Keegan Murray’s Offensive Evolution for Sacramento Kings

Keegan Murray’s Offensive Evolution for Sacramento Kings

Hates juice and Mo and yes the Kings may be off today but I just wanted to watch some Keegan Murray and so I said Morgan can we please watch some Keegan Murray he begged I mean he had 28 points 12 rebounds and a double OT win it was a

Lot of good stuff from that game do showed me one highlight and I said fine let’s go to the film room his Evolution this year has been pretty wild now he’s got to do it consistently but last night you kind of saw what he’s been able to put together this year for the

Sacramento Kings last year more of a catch and shoot guy right mhm that’s all he was doing but his usage is up this year and the most dramatic change is he’s scoring at different levels of the floor this year yeah I I mean you look at it whether it’s inside the paint or

If it’s on the baseline or if it’s behind the three but it’s not just those spots on the floor it’s how he’s getting to those spots that has really evolved with his game well let’s dive in and the first thing we’re going to look at is a couple of sequences where he’s showing

Off that floater Morgan all right so look at how domas gets Duarte to cut all the way through in that action and I love that you see how it’s fron Vagner that is following dwarte on that right and you’re seeing all the help collapse there well they have to recover get on

Keegan Keegan recognizes that right away rips through goes Baseline and gets this little floater now my favorite thing about this floater is that it’s not a jump shot it is a FL you know how hard it is to get that perfect type of finesse and he has truly brought that to

His game at a different level this year he’s been much different in the mid-range last year he had 114 mid-range shots this year he’s already at 110 attempts through the first 33 games of the king season all right this is another example Morgan of that floater

You were talking about it he just has really incredible touch with this oh wow see that again domas sabonis the way that he creates gets into the paint you see Keegan right there he recognized relocates again now you think that he’s going to relocate and cut all

The way through but then he sees the help come over from the magic and what does he do takes the quick shot quick decision I just I love his decision making and his efficiency this year one thing the Kings love to do is push the ball especially off misses this is a

Nice defense by sabonis and Keegan just gets out and runs the floor which is great but how about him avoiding that block look at the way he controls his body we always talk about Dean Fox and his ability to control his body I mean it’s something that he is worked on he seems

Like a lighter guy but Keegan Murray is so athletic in this way and this is something actually we talked about during the draft too is his athleticism some people see that as speed and um and other features of someone’s game but with Keegan it’s his ability to really

Control himself in the air and you’re seeing it right right here as he has Pao just kind of run by him in transition this next play Morgan this is why we’re in the film room this might be my favorite play of Keegan Murray’s career

Oh my God is that a hot take I mean a little bit this was with fron Vagner on him and you know the monks aonis action is going to cost so much attention but Keegan’s a threat from the outside vogner knows that and he’s coming out hard on Keegan Murray but Keegan like

I’m not just a catch and shoot guy anymore I can put on the floor what do you think of how Keegan handled this situation well I thought fron Vagner did a good job right there at first staying with Keegan and really cutting him off and what we saw last year is Keegan

Would pass that ball away right what you’re seeing this year he goes oh cut me off once you can’t cut me off twice double crossover in and out goes to the middle down the left side high off the glass are you kidding me that’s just a move he’s not making last year you’re

Right that first this is the first part where he gets stopped by Vagner he’s pulling it back out and he’s passing the rock no he’s like I’ve worked on my handles I’m going to attack and he’s patient with it like look at him really survey the entire floor here and see

What he wants to do and he sees okay I got this Lane he’s aggressive with it and I love just the high arcing shot off the glass now you’re probably wondering well you don’t want him to go away from catch and shoot threes because he’s

Really good at it last year he took five .8 catch and shoot threes per game okay any ideas what he’s taking this year what is he taking 5.8 exactly the same it’s just everything else has gone up the mid-range game is something that he’s really added to his game with that

Floater and of course some of these mid-range looks let’s look at more of this and this is a good example of the mid-range look for kingan Murray and you know what I love about that he’s being strong with it he’s coming off of sabona shoulder perfectly right like if you’re big and you’re

Setting that screen in the in the first place you want to make sure that you’re coming off strong and I said perfectly he could come off even a little bit tighter but he said okay maybe I didn’t come off tight enough let me push my guy off with my strength with this power

Step back nice beautiful midi you know I said earlier my favorite play was that fron Vagner take this one may be up there too you said of his career already I know but this might be up to because we’re seeing him grow before our eyes

And this is the type of things these are the type of things you want to see from Young Players right or in this situation I’m telling you last year when he has the ball he’s shooting this instead he puts it on the floor and attacks it oo I

Love that I mean one of my favorite things is him throwing it down right going to the rim with authority too that was something else we saw last year where it was like hey he needs to be more aggressive at The Rim you know not finish softly don’t just take every shot

Uh in the key as a floater as a jumper he’s throwing it down at The Rim love the dunk but you’re exactly right he recognizes I think it’s Palo banero again running him off the line so he says okay do that cuz I’m going to go all the way impressive stuff there from

Keegan and this last play we’re going to look at he has switched on to The Talented rookie Anthony black who’s got good size at the guard spot I thought Keegan played some good defense and then he did what he’s supposed to do run the floor look at how he defended that good

Contest get out and go oh my goodness I mean you’re running with the person that’s pushing up the floor and let me just say this the person that is pushing up the floor with that dribble is domasa bonus it’s your big so yeah you better run your lane you

Better run that floor and that’s exactly what he did the def Defender committed to domos trying to stop him not even recognizing that Keegan was all the way down on the right side and then when you’re big is going to throw you in alleyoop like how how many times are you

Seeing that in a game I know this is this is about Keegan’s breakdown here but just so much love on domas on this play and Keegan executing it I just think there’s a lot to be excited about with Keegan Murray there’s going to be ups and downs with any young player and

He just had a few games stretch where he struggling a bit but when you see these type of glimpses against by the way a team that has pretty good defense though they were short-handed it gets me excited about what he can be in the future absolutely and and I think you’re

Going to see it go up and down because he’s young and he’s still trying to figure out how can I be a great two-way player and not just an offensive Force so um there will be many more Keegan Murray breakdowns in the future what do

You guys think of how he played what do you think his ceiling is in the NBA let us know in the comments below hit the thumbs up and make sure you subscribe we go live after every single Kings game de de they tell you what they know de and mo de and

Well, the Kings were off on Thursday after a wild double OT win over Orlando. I was still buzzing from some of the performances we witnessed and convinced Morgan to take a look at Keegan Murray’s night against the Magic.

Keegan finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds on 13-21 FG and 2-6 from 3.

His game has shown tremendous growth this season and he’s showing that the offseason workouts with De’Aaron Fox have paid off in a big way.

  1. His game has shown tremendous growth this season and he's showing that the offseason workouts with De'Aaron Fox have paid off in a big way.

The numbers back up what we're seeing, too. Keegan was mainly a catch-and-shoot three point shooter last season and 62% of his shot attempts came from 3 (according to CleaningTheGlass.com).

That number has dropped during his sophomore campaign with 50% of his attempts coming from beyond the arc.

This year his usage is up and he's taking different type of shots. He's showing he can put the ball on the floor to attack, he's added a nice floater with soft touch, he's starting to execute some high-window finishes over rim protection and his handles have greatly improved.

The floaters and mid-range looks have increased and he's far more efficient in those areas.

Last season: 114 attempts in the midrange in 80 games (37 FG% from midrange)

This season: 110 attempts in the midrange in 29 games (51 FG% from midrange).

You don't want him to forget the catch-and-shoot threes because it's a great shot for him. The good news? He's not.

Last season he took 5.8 catch-and-shoot attempts per game and that number is exactly the same this season.

Keegan's taken major strides defensively and we're seeing the growth on offense as well. I think the Kings found a future two-way star in the NBA.

  2. I get frustrated when keegan hot potatoes the ball to domas or fox if the 3 isnt there. Ive noticed a few times domas passing him the ball and getting out the way. They are pushing that development. Nothing gets me more giddy than watching keegan develop. He is truly the key to the kings reaching their ceiling.

  3. Thank you for doing breakdowns! It's always hard to find videos of ppl breaking down how Kings players play.
