Joe Mazzulla on BENCHING Celtics Starters in Bucks Blowout Win | Postgame Interview 1/11/24

What went into the decision to rest the starters for the second half and leave them on the bench that whole time uh I just thought it was in the best interest of our team uh just the way the game was going um yeah it’s kind of thought that was what’s best for

Everybody you want more I I mean I don’t have a I can’t give you a more elaborate answer on that I just thought that was what was best for our team just considering it you know so I’m not trying to be any type of way you uh didn’t have it tonight it’s

Happening from time to time I thought the intentions were great they our guys gave it all they had uh for as long as they could just didn’t go away you know on either end of the floor but that was my decision that you know I wasn’t there

So think Bas last um I don’t know you know you uh I think just over the course of a of a season you have those from time to time um I don’t can’t point to one particular thing um all I know is um guys gave it a

Shot and uh just didn’t go how would you have treated that maybe differently last season um before getting that experience as a coach and uh I don’t think you probably would have handled it the same way sitting guys for the second half so how is that informed how you kind of

Approach the pace of the season the whatever else yeah I everything’s about the players and so as you to look at life from a player’s perspective and you look at the intentions and the character of your team uh in a year of experience for myself and so I trust our character

I trust our team um you have to look at this and say okay is this a one-off is this a trend is this something that you have to be concerned about and when you look at stuff like that the answer is no no and uh things like this happen and

You can actually use them as opportunities because it gives you perspective you’re able to take a deep breath and uh you know as I said we’re very we’re not on that the side of that very often and so when when you are it’s good to learn from it so um I think just

You know as you develop as you’ve been in the league a little bit and you start to see that you develop your identity and and uh you know you have to always do what’s best for the players and I felt like that was what’s best for the players in our team

Joe you know nice like this is going to happen but you don’t ever want to get this bad where they take a 45 point lead is there something that uh you can do this the NBA can do to prevent nights like this where I mean they literally

Switch to another game G in the second half on TNT because with the lack of competition because you guys are coming off you guys are tired like is there’s something that the league could do or that you could do to prevent it from getting this bad uh I have no idea I’m

Not on the league committee yet I don’t run the league I don’t do the scheduling I coach the team and my only job is to do what’s best for the players and it goes back to when you’re in uh moments throughout the season the way you handle

Winning and losing it goes back to your intentions it goes back to your character and so uh our guys bring it every single night uh every single night every single day and it’s not always going to go your way and um it’s more about just how you respond to it and

Stuff like that happened so I can’t speak on things that I’m not experienced in it’s just it’s about the players it’s about the locker room and uh we gave it a shot didn’t go our away and to me I’d rather focus on the second half our goal

Was to win a quarter we won one in the fourth quarter and I love the uh intentionality that our second unit brought so O’Shea Sam pton Luke’s fee Lamar Delano and neimi like they played hard executed and that to me is is what’s more important from tonight’s

Game when halime when you tell Jason jayen they’re resting was there any push back or they looking at you like man yeah we’re we’re we’re fry it’s tough right like they want to play they’re competitive again it was my decision it wasn’t theirs at the end of the day it’s

My responsibility to do what’s best for them and the team and so they obviously if I said hey you want to go out there they’re going to do it and uh so it was me I just I told him and I felt like that was my responsibility to do it just

You kind of like the trainer thrown in the tow for his boxer like you see I love you guys yeah I’m just saying you kind of you got do what best for your c yeah you do and like as I you just it’s hard um you know like

You said it was my decision it wasn’t theirs they’re going to always want to play uh we do talk minutes and hey do you want to stay in here but I think at the end of the day I got to do the the best thing possible so um I mean I guess

I don’t want to use the phrase throw in the towel it’s more about the perspective of your team and the where your team is at right and uh you look at our team over the course of these where we played 38 39 games uh We’ve developed

A a you know a toughness a mindset we’ve done a lot of great things on back Tob backs we’ve done a lot of great things underhanded and tonight just wasn’t our night and I think you have to have the humility to know that from time to time

It it be more important how we respond on Saturday because um these aren’t excuses this is just the way life is this is the way it goes and as I said to the team after I don’t this doesn’t I’ve said it before it’s more about who are

We going to be on Saturday you know who are we going to be in other tough situations last question do you not allow it to extend be how do you when you have throw it away uh I think it’s a really good question I think you have to look at it

From the standpoint of you’re going if we let’s just say we lose the next game against Houston you guys are going to be like that’s two in a row now you’ve lost two did any of the habits from last game bleed into this game and like those are

The questions that you’re going to ask and the answer is no just because whether we win or lose a game uh is not going to be contingent upon what happened tonight uh it could be a two-point loss at overtime it could be a 20-point game and what you have to look

At is the trends that we’re developing and the habits that we’re de developing over a long period of time and over a long period of time we’ve developed really good habits and so regardless of how the result of the next game goes it doesn’t it’s not contingent upon what

Happened today and so I just don’t look at it that way and uh it’s more about the habits where you know we’re develop it and so you take a look at last game uh 80% 20% we played Celtic basketball and so can we do that over the course of long

Stretches Joe got to ask this you e is coming back Saturday and can you kind of capsulize that year that you coached under him what was it like what did you learn and what did you take from him that that one yeah that’s uh I probably I’m not probably I definitely wouldn’t

Be like you look at guys and coaches around the league who don’t get experiences working uh from multiple head coaches and so that I could sit here today it’s I’m grateful that I got to work for him I’m grateful that I got to see another way to do things because

I was with Brad for three years I think and that was the only experience I had had in the NBA and so if they don’t get that opportunity to work for another coach who’s worked for multiple coaches who’s been on benches for championships who’s been uh San Antonio Philly uh

Other stops and I don’t get to see how the the league is how the league works and looking at it from a different perspective and so I’m grateful for that year because I got to see uh different approach and I kind of compare it to the

Year I played for beine and in the couple years that I played for Huggins they were two like really good coaches and on the outside they seem to have very contrasting Styles but they’re similar in the way they uh coach the game or you know defense how they look

At defense how they look at offense and so I kind of compare it to that is where I got to see two really good coaches do it different ways and and uh combine My Philosophy with theirs and and try to make something in my own thank you Joe thank you

MILWAUKEE — Bobby Portis and Giannis Antetokounmpo orchestrated a powerful run for the Bucks, scoring 20 straight points in a first-half 25-0 surge, leading to a 135-102 win over the NBA-leading Boston Celtics on Thursday night. Celtics Head Coach Mazzulla reflected on the game, stating, “You can actually use it as opportunities… perspective when you take a deep breath.” He recognized that such off nights happen during the season and emphasized that this particular loss doesn’t signify a recurring issue.

  1. If the Celtics would have won none of you Celtics fanboys would have not cried like a bunch of women about back to back so I don’t want to hear that garbage now

  2. The bucks got wooped by the rockets a few days ago. . . We’ll be fine, this is our first blowout loss all season. Series is tied with buck. And they are still like 3 games behind us.

  3. If one of our starters got injured in the third quarter, this wouldn't even be a discussion. Good on Joe for seeing the bigger picture

  4. Bucks whooped that azz and both Celtics coaching staff and these soft azz Celtics fans have settled on excuses..smh

  5. I gained another level of respect for this guy from this interview. It was so obvious they were gassed. Well done Joe. On to the next one.

  6. Bucks fan here . Meaningless game . The Celtics were obviously tired from the back to back . If we could win Like this with a rested Celtics team . That would matter .

  7. Another emotional game on Saturday with Udoka’s return. Smart move to sit the first string so they will be ready for the next game.

  8. Bucks came back from down 33 at halftime against the Jazz and clawed back to a 7 point deficit at one point. That was two days before this game.

When your starters make their bed, they should lie in it. Build some freaking character. Face adversity instead of humiliating your bench players.

This coach doesn’t believe in consequences for your actions. He felt sorry for his starters, so they rested for the rest of the game.

This team will go nowhere if this is what the coach expects from them. Better hit those threes, because you don’t have the character and grit to win any other way.

Also, I love how he looks like he’s gonna cry the whole time.

    Not championship caliber.

  9. If the league switch the game off on halftime maybe they should not scheduel teams back to back on a national televise game expecially when you know coming into the season it's gonna be the two top teams from the conference…. just saying.

  10. I dont hate the move. I know the Celtics were tired and the Bucks knew it too. I dont think anyone thinks all things being equal the Bucks would win a 7 game series against us.

  11. This dude forreal didnt even bother putting in the starters for the second half cuz yall were getting your asses handed to you from the tip off. Thats wack as hell and weak. Waving the white flag when yall had a full half to try and turn things around. Minnesota played a back to back on Wed. and took the Celtics to overtime. Im just saying thats wack. And in a nationally televised game. It was so bad they switched to a different game…LMAO!!!! anyone who supports Joes decision to do that is just as wack as he is.

  12. 1 for 17 from 3 point range will bring a huge deficit 😂 good move sitting the starters down 🎉

  13. Exactly he’s smart he benched the players. So he was focusing more on how bucks play I bet you, he was studing then the whole game. Without getting caught up worrying much with his star players he was reading the bucks game , watch next game
