Is this that the roster is not that good some of the players are struggling and playing below what they’re capable of playing but then the coaching issue just compounds all of that compounds that because when anthon’s struggling you want to try and get him a clean look an open look a look

In Rhythm coming off a screen or maybe being able to give him a lane by having him curl off a pin down and see if he can get into the lane that way and see if he can get into the paint against the defense that’s not entirely set because

You got some motion and off ball Defenders are having to worry about the motion so they aren’t as ready to help the problem is we don’t do anything to make it easier on him all of his shots have to come from a stagnant situation a pick and roll when you’re going up

Against a lot of length it just makes it harder so you know like people probably say I’m just going to make a bunch of excuses for Anthony after he goes over 10 no over 10 is awful but there’s also things that could there’s things that we

Regarding players on this team right now you need to think about what they will be in three to four years not what they are right now because what they are right now when we’re losing game after game by 20 to 60 points doesn’t really matter what matters is we have pieces on

Was pretty bad but it led to good things but just the that being the end of kind of the jail Blazers era and that whole just like a lot of fans had given up on the team and the organization and stuff so I I’d probably say that was worse um what was it

Line the thing is with three-point shooting though is maybe we got lucky at the start of the season when we were holding teams to like the second lowest three-point percentage in the league yeah well how much of that was luck because shooting some of it defensively obviously is luck

Where teams just miss shots right but when you’re not flying around and flying out on three-point Shooters earlier in the season we’re closing out hard on three-point Shooters and running them off the line now we’re not we’re barely even contesting shots we’re closing out so slow so So

Soft no discipline a lot of times we close out we’re not even in a stance so we’re letting teams get up quality three-point looks and they hit a bunch of them so the defense is awful and then offensively I mean literally everyone is struggling lately and the

Whole system looks like a joke right now so once again when a team for the second straight year is playing defense at a top 10 level for the first few weeks of the season and then falls off a cliff and all of a sudden the defense looks

Like one of the worst defenses ever the rest of the season like it has now for two straight Seasons under chony bips that to me is a coaching problem because they’ve shown at times they are capable of playing defense whether that was luck or not it’s even worse if it was luck

Because then there wasn’t even like positives to show about it but chony has gotten off to pretty good starts defensively for two seasons now and hasn’t made a single adjustment the teams regressed on defense both years and with and like Taylor Packers says one roster that was designed to win and

Make the playoffs one roster that’s a rebuilding roster or whatever so in either scenario the defense should be getting better not look like it is just completely fallen off to the point where multiple people aren’t even giving effort on rebounds multiple people aren’t closing out multiple people

Aren’t even getting back on defense let alone playing defense and that is a problem with the Portland Trail leers yep 100% 100% um like th’s def defense has been awful lately man he just he loves Ste steel streak though he loves steel so much he overplays everything and will

General matis liel belongs on a good defensive team where he can gamble for those steals knock down some threes his shot has gotten better in Portland props to him for putting the work in but needs to be on a team that can make up for his mistakes because right now his mistakes

The day they don’t run much offense the effort is abysmal they look like they’ve quit on their coach the roster isn’t good I’m not saying the roster is good because it’s not they’re very young and Chon’s doing a bad job all those things are true yeah anyway go go

On with scoot what are you worried with I am worried about his clock awareness and that is something that’s very important for a point guard in particular um that it seems to happen every game where there’s a light quarter situation like tonight he dribbles down there’s a few seconds left on the clock

And he just dribbles towards the sideline into coverage doesn’t even come close to getting a shot off um dribbles it out of bounds but it was beside the point he wasn’t getting a shot off my question is with that play specifically like was there a better option for him

Like I’m I’m just saying you have to know the time on the clock and you have to get to a shot there’s been a lot of times where he slows the ball up he catches the ball with like 5 seconds on the shot clock and he dribbles it or

There’s 15 seconds left and he waits till like 4 seconds on the clock to go into his move kind of like the Dame wave byby shot where you’re like what are you doing Dave like there’s no you’re running out of time what are you doing

You know but he’s not Dame so you know he’s not going to hit a step back three from 37 feet right um so like almost every game there’s some sort of situation where we get a uh shot clock violation or he gets a kickout pass with

Two seconds on a shot clock and he dribbles in instead of shoots the ball and it’s just it’s happened way too many times for me to not start to get concerned that he’s just not very aware of the clock and to me most good to elite point guards that’s one of the

Things you need to be really good at is managing the clock managing the shot clock knowing when you need to push the ball and get a get a shot up quickly and when to slow it down and all that kind of stuff and there’s still plenty of

Time to learn that stuff I’m not that’s something that’s learnable yeah y so I’m I’m just saying I’m looking at that like man come on you need to be better in those situations even as a rookie so it’s starting to get a little concerning to me not concerning it’s something to

Improve um for sure I agree on that facet of things but that is something that is pretty improvable yeah and maybe he needs to stop wearing goggles like I don’t know you know I don’t know but um what I’m going to say is going to shock you no

Okay if Terry STS was coach I don’t think it’d be as much of a problem clock awareness or just scoot in general his clock awareness cuz Terry would always shout out five four three or someone on the bench yeah yeah or somebody you never hear that nobody on

The bench communicates that the shot clock’s winding down yes you want your players to know the clock in general but also you got people that can help that’s funny I mean that’s not shocking like I know I know what you’re talking about yeah yeah

That the one thing STS did well is he he was just shout out the clock and and players would know players would know I mean that that would help scoot having somebody shout out the clock to him he needs to be more aware but the coaching

Staff could help him be more aware just by communicating we talk about players needing to communicate with each other the coaching staff in that situation somebody should be shouting out the clock somebody should be communicating I never hear it on TV you would hear it with Terry STS

But I think when you have a situation where you’re getting the ball and there’s only a few seconds left in a corner you can’t dribble to the sideline and get trapped 30t from the basket I I think I think certain scenarios some of is like he doesn’t know what to do

Because he’s not shooting a 30-footer you know what I mean and nobody is open and nothing is there Randy pal has an excuse for everything man a 19-year-old point guard struggling with stuff all point guards need to learn what a bold take dude this is his third year of

Playing NBA shot clock NBA Style game it’s it’s something that should be in your third season of playing professional NBA rules basketball you should be getting you should not be having as many problems in my opinion it’s not something that I don’t think can fix I’m not worried that it’s going

To make him a horrible player and a bust or anything like that that’s not what I’m saying but to excuse him being 19 when he has played under these NBA rules with a 24 second shot clock for for three seasons now it’s it is concerning that he still has that lack of awareness

About the the clock situations and it’s happening every game yeah and it’s not like you don’t play with the clock before you get to the NBA either like right yeah I mean there’s there’s only two halves in in B in college though he didn’t play in college but if you did

Play in college there’s only two halves and there’s a 30 second shot clock so it’s a little it’s not as rushed as it is in the NBA uh there’s 10 seconds to get it across instead of eight and all that kind of stuff but um yeah yep um so he’s struggling a little

Bit more than he probably should be with that I don’t know why um but I think some of that is a lot of times he’s like overthought things and when you get caught overthinking things you forget something like the game clock or the shot clock uh so some of it will

Come once he gets more comfortable that’s why I’m not worried also hopefully we’ll have a new coaching staff that’ll let them know that’ll communicate what does what does who he’s playing against have to do with if you catch the ball with two seconds on the shot clock

You need to be aware that you have to let it fly like you can’t dribble and pass again like there’s no time to pass it again if you’re not aware in those situations you can be you could have Rudy goar guarding you or you could have

Tori guarding you not that you’re a bad Defender Tori and I didn’t mean it that way sorry uh but like damn it doesn’t matter who’s guarding you if you catch the ball in a kick out with two seconds on the shot clock and you’re not aware

That you have to shoot the ball and you cannot take two dribbles and pass the ball like that’s that’s not it has nothing to do with who you’re playing against or playing with that is something that is internal with scoot that he needs to learn

Personally and he can do that on his own and it is I once again I am not saying he’s a bust I’m not saying like I’m giving up on him because of this or anything like that because like Tori said this is learnable skills but it does lead me to

Shots and everything else built off of that um like Gary Gary hasn’t been too impressive in really any area other than hitting threes yeah he has a little bit of an off the dribble game on top of that that’s the thing if you can hit threes on volume both off the dribble

And off the catch it gives you a pretty high floor so that if you can do anything else like get steals play a little bit of Defense create a little bit then you’re a role player in the league now the shooting is getting better and better so maybe the bar for

Those types of players becoming role players raises because it’s not as much of a commodity as it was even five years ago but um that was the thing with ant and with Gary those guys were snipers like ant when he first started playing was basically just a three-point spell

Specialist and then the off the drill b game has grown from there uh obviously still work to be done but he’s improved a lot so he just provided something on to of that um so that’s the thing like scouting wise with some of these guys is like okay they’re three-point Shooters

But what else and with three and D guys it’s like okay are they just three and D guys or are they three and d and can do a little bit of something else that’s why I liked um Trey Murphy was cuz he was like 3 and D but he was also

Athletic like 6’8 6’9 good cut so I I like that it was something on top of being a three and D guy herb Jones as well like his three-point shot ain’t great but he can pass and he can handle a little bit so it was like man if he

Can just get that three-point shot decent enough then he’s three and D with something extra on top of that that is definitely going to be a good role player in the league because it was pretty much a given he was going to be a good Defender so as far as scouting this

Year especially with that three and D archetype it’s like three and d and what else is there anything else they can provide on top of that if not I’ll fade them a little bit but if there is then that gives them a leg up on basic three

And D guys in the league that don’t do much else yeah I completely agree with you the shooting is one thing um that can set you apart as a guard but there’s two other factors in particular with Anthony and Gary compared to scoot the first one

Is that both Anthony and Gary had very low expectations first year uh Gary played a little tiny bit Anthony barely played his first year at all um so there was no this is a generational Prospect we have like there wasn’t the criticism like if they came in and did anything

Like it was a bonus um which they didn’t really do at all their rookie years um but yeah they got to sit and watch Dame and CJ and practice against those guys and learn how they they uh you know worked and and did all those things and say what you want about Dame

And CJ but those are two of the most uh or the biggest workers in terms of their game and stuff in the NBA and uh the second point is kind of along those lines but Dame has always been a team guy and never has felt threatened by the Blazers drafting

Another player at his position and all that stuff I mean you can say maybe this summer he was but that was for completely different reasons than scoot just being a point guard it was just the whole commitment to winning thing but for the most part through the first 11 years he

Was here he was not threatened by an infy Simons so instead he wanted anony Simons to be great so he mentored him to be like him and to play like him and so scoot doesn’t have a Damen Lillard he has anthon Simons but anthon’s also trying to learn a new role he’s not

Entrenched as a 10-year starter in the league that knows how to play and knows everything about leading a team and being a good leader and all that he’s trying to figure out even how to be a leader he doesn’t let alone be the great leader that Dame was so um

I I think it really hurts not having that kind of guy and you can say Malcolm’s that all you want but I mean he was just brought in he was new too it’s not like he’s been around the Blazers Organization for a while or anything like that so I think those two

Things but it’s mostly just the expectations of scoot as like a number one pick in most drafts I think it’s it’s just hurting him like his perceived uh value and stuff like that yeah um so in terms of like three and d and something else two guys that I like that

Are both older prospects one is Dylan Jones rebounds the ball really well passes the ball um uses body well and drives uh very physical presence NBA ready body like I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes in as a role player right away I I think he’s a first round

Prospect and then Kevin mcculler from Kansas who has always struggled with his three-point shot but this year is shooting um where’s he at he shooting 38% from three right now he’s always been a good playmaker always been a really good defensive player and been somebody that can drive score a little

Bit but now he’s finally knocking down that three-point shot so role player floor as like a good Defender connector piece passer if he can hit threes uh like he has this year then he has some sneaky upside and you look at some players like that have had sneaky upside

Like late in the lottery to like later in the first round that maybe were a little bit older like Kim hawkz is a good example from this past year’s draft I feel like Kevin mcculler kind of fits into that archetype that people don’t people might not draft him highly

Because they don’t think he has a ton of upside because he’s 23 years old coming into the league but you look at those traits and that could be a very good player in the league if he’s able to knock down threes play lock down defense be a connector piece and passer and then

Be able to drive score that sort of thing so he wasn’t really on draft boards prior to this year because he’s not like an exceptional athlete and he was a poor three-point shooter so it was kind of like what is his role off the

Ball if he’s a 38% or in the league or whatever then he plays on or off the ball and he’s very intriguing I think he was on uh he was like a late second round pick on some boards last year decided to go back which was a great decision and I think

He’s a I think he’s a lottery pick right now yeah um did he did he measure at the combine last year I’m gonna look that up yeah look that up um oh know he he backed out of the combine and didn’t measure dang it I

Don’t think he’s he looks so tiny I I don’t know like that’s the only concern I have is that he’s going to measure like 6’2 63 and I don’t think he’s that short um I think he’s 6’5 but yeah measurements obviously matter but I like I feel that way about so many players

It’s kind of hard to knock any of them down too much because I feel like a bunch of heights are inflated yeah um so we’ll have to wait and see I not for the Blazers but man dillingham’s looking nice as well he he has upside he has I

Think he has star upside Eric like and there’s not many guys like that and that’s where it just kind of sucks like he’s a guard though you know yeah yeah um but that’s where it’s like I wouldn’t be shocked to see him go three you know

Like if if Holland and S off the board I think Dillingham could go as high as three like you’re looking at topit I don’t know I don’t understand why people are higher on topage like I don’t think he’s truly 66 I think he’s 6’4 maybe 6’5 he can pass

The ball and finish with his three-point shot you look at the problems like scoots having right now topish is three-point shot is a major worry for me and how much is he going to be able to to separate if he doesn’t have that threat of the three-point shot yeah I don’t love

Topage like other people do that have him some people think he might go number one I think it’s just the playmaking creation with size I think it’s just that’s all it is is people so Ricky Rubio people see that well I mean like people don’t think Ricky Rubio when they

See that they think more uh donic the next yeah but that’s the thing all these guys that struggle to shoot they’re not donic it’s Josh giddy or like Josh giddy is a fine player but Josh giddy or it’s um Ricky Rubio type of guy it’s a role player

It’s not a guy you draft top three so right now I would probably take Dillingham ahead of topic yeah I mean I’m not arguing that I just I think people just like having size as a playmaker um like that’s intriguing to teams but I do I mean he’s a good free throw shooter

Um he doesn’t take a lot of Threes I I I think he’s his form is okay he short arms it a little bit doesn’t completely follow through with his arm um if he cleans that up I think he could still come around a little bit on his three-point shot he definitely could if

He can shoot threes opens up his game then he has a high level of upside I just think you know Dillingham is shooting 44% from three like he’s for a three point shooter Plus like how Shifty he is and just how creative he is and you know I’m big on like movement

Patterns I mean that guy just moves like a star player does he has change of pace he has a really good feel um and he’s doing it with a bunch of other guards there too which is impressive um but like man it’s frustrating like I have the same problem with the g-league

Andite team it’s just like there’s too many prospects on that team I want one of those guys to be on their own team like I’d love to have Reed Shephard be on his own team right now and and Wagner to be on his own team and Dillingham to

Be on his own team and see how they would do as the main guy not having to share with those other guys yeah I Shephard’s interesting just because it’s like Elite three and D although his D is more like matis thel like than like GNA

Stay in front of you be solid contain D penetration um but like he can pass too so those combinations of traits has a quick shot like is he going to be able to shoot 10 threes a game shoot off screens and then like be able to get

Downhill he has some sneaky upside just because his shot is such a threat um and that there’s been shooters that come into the league that like they’re just looked at as Shooters but then they developed that off the dribble game and become star players like Devon

Booker was kind of that way he had a little bit more off the dribble but Tyler herro was that way as well both those guys went to Kentucky right yeah Booker went to Kentucky so uh that’s another kind of Kentucky shooter guard that might have some off the dribble

Creation upside and does some impressive things defensively is kind of a pest so he’s he is surely going to be a quality role player yeah like he is going to be a starting caliber role player he has maybe as high of a floor as anybody in this draft

Yeah because he’s going to be able to shoot he’s going to be solid defensively and he can make the right pass perfect role player material yeah if if I’m if I my choice of one of the other I’m taking Dillingham just cuz like you said I

Think he’s got more starup side um but yeah I don’t think Shepard’s a bad pick I just wouldn’t take him higher than someone I think is going to potentially be a star even if they don’t turn out to a star I think it’s more I’d rather take

A risk on on the higher up side but yeah Dillingham for me is pushing to five maybe top five and then read shepher top 10 is kind of how I view it right now agree because none of these guys like Tyler Smith has gotten some love but

His his scream just his game just screams basic to me from what I’ve seen of him who are you talking about Tyler Smith Oh Tyler Smith like he’ll knock down some threes he’ll play some solid defense he doesn’t do anything else but so this is where I struggle with guys like

Him um like we the g-league ignite team sucks man I hate watching them they they have no I don’t know it’s just like they play so weird and like I could say that about almost all their players like they don’t there’s too many dudes on that team there’s too many prospects there’s too

Many politics and stuff involved with who plays and who gets minutes and who does what um and I I just find myself wondering if it’s just like a summer league situation where they they’ve got like not they don’t have Antonio blakney but they have like guys like that you

Know that are trying to get theirs and and whatever and The Bigs just get lost in that system so I think that’s part of it but yeah I I agree with you he doesn’t like particularly jump out at you uh like overall in games but he does

Make some plays that are like wow he could be a really good player If he if he’s consistent yeah I the G league is not the best developmental route it’s not I think college is a better developmental route for some of the reasons that you stated uh stuff on

Castles and I now too like why why would you go to the G League now I just don’t understand yeah like live that college lifestyle for year you know and get paid play college basketball like I mean I guess it sucks going to class and stuff instead of just playing basketball those

Dudes don’t go to class I know I know but um Stefon Castle is he was injured and like he was struggling wasn’t getting many minutes but the last three games 30 36 36 in terms of minutes 14 14 and 12 efficient shooting night six and

Seven 5 and N six and N rebound the ball passing the ball he’s somebody that I don’t know how much the injury was bothering him can’t shoot but here’s the thing is like like topit is struggling he can make plays he’s maybe not the same level as topit but he’s I

Feel like he’s a little bigger that’s where it’s going to be interesting to compare the two I I don’t really view Castle and topit all that differently yeah at the end of the day they’re going to need to be able to knock down shots and it opens up but

Like I like the I like the pace that he plays with um and that’s something that I’m looking for even more now after watching scoot yeah so Castle is intriguing his creation’s last playmaking has been impressive yeah s like what did SGA shoot in college I don’t know look it up cuz like

SGA I don’t remember him being regarded as like the best three-point shooter and he wasn’t particularly like quick he just got to his spots so I’m trying to find the next guy and you remember like I don’t think Anthony Edwards like we we debated about him I think at one point during the

Season we were talking about he like like 30% shooting threes but it was like all like really tough guy in your face step back threes and stuff and yeah uh so he he shot 40.4% but it was only one and a half attempts a game he shoot his rookie year

Though he came in and didn’t he struggle that first year with the Clippers like he was solid but just struggled from three yeah um Castle’s a guy where if he starts hitting threes he’s going to rise up boards back into the top 10 yeah I oh

That was wrong thing and if he’s big enough to play the small forward spot he’s kind of intriguing for Portland no he shot 36.7% as rookie year but one 1.7 attempts yeah he didn’t shoot many that’s what it was okay yeah okay and then he struck there’s been a couple

Years in OKC where he struggled 34.7 one year 30% two years ago I I like the idea of kware big that can protect the rim maybe switch out and not get completely obliterated and then knock down threes um I don’t think he’s quite Derek Lively but I think he could be somebody solid at the next level especially if he’s able to hit

Threes on more volume he only shoots 1.3 a game in 31 minutes but he shoots 37% on him um Ryan done I just do not like Eric I just that type of archetype I just do not like yeah like like he would he he would be unplayable late in games and just a

Non-factor on the other end of the floor I feel like yeah well I think with him like if he’s a second round pick you’re talking about what a great impact you got out of a second pick like tamani you know yeah um but yeah taking him like late lottery or

Even in the late teens I I I like done a lot for his motor and his defensive ability but uh just such an offensive liability is going to be tough to make him fit in any any roster but yeah here’s my thing is like he’s 21 and a half on draft night

How old is Ryan rera on draft Knight 20 and a half or something like that he’s Ryan dun’s like a year older than Ryan repair and rupair defensively I think will be a lock down guy I don’t think he’s as good as Ryan Dunn is right now

But he has time to grow into like a really good Defender ruper shows much more in terms of being able to handle the ball than like Ayan Dunn does and he kind like the thing is with ruper he seems to have a feel and moves well and

Is just a smooth guy off the dribble he has to improve his strength he has to improve his ability to read the defense decision like there’s a bunch of things he has to improve but you can kind of see some potential at least I can see

Some potential in him being a guy that can handle a little bit and maybe pass slightly and then the G League is’s shooting 40 some perc from three and he came in in the game hit a three for the Blazers like I would rather just keep developing him than draft oryan D yeah

Yeah uh rapair also had a nice pass from the middle of the key to a cutting Kamar for a jam that was nice yeah yeah so like I I do not want this I I do not want a Ryan Dunn type of prospect I’d rather just keep trying to develop repair
