Don’t Compare Rudy Gobert’s Timberwolves To The Utah Jazz …
Welcome to another hows and grows breakdown today we’re talking about Minnesota’s best in the league defense again but more importantly we’re talking about how their roster construction makes Rudy goar’s impact something totally different to what he had in Utah and ultimately what made him exposable in Utah now the Jazz were obviously a
Fantastic team when goar was paired up with Donovan Mitchell but we saw how their lack of perimeter defense ERS left go unprotected on so many occasions the most famous being the Clippers series when his reputation as an exposable Defender was cemented that’s why it was so intriguing to watch The Wolves
Suffocate this new and improved version of the Clippers with go at the middle of it all go is clearly going to do his thing every night defensively but without his teammates providing him help he’s not going to be able to do everything that’s where this wolves team
From the Jazz they have Elite Defenders scattered through their roster and they enhance goar’s strengths and limit his weaknesses we saw it all in this game against a really good Clippers team but I think the second half was the best defense we’ve seen all season so we see
Here to begin with if McDaniels doesn’t cut off this original cut from Paul George go is stuck here in drop having to get out and contest a potential three so that’s the first Danger shut down so the Clippers are going to cycle through their offense and they obviously have a
Ton of threats to go to it gets back to harden and now it’s go getting up here and making his rotation to shut down a drive so it swings to Kawaii and Edwards is here closing out to stop that shot and staying with him to stop him from
Getting downhill and forcing goar to deal with that Superstar at The Rim go is going to do a ton every night just like he did in Utah but having McDaniel and Edwards prevent some of those actions by doing their own work is a godsend and something he hasn’t really
Had before again Edwards is going to stick with PG on this curling Ivers and cut through here to stop the first option on the play but when George goes into the post and then pops off this down screen Edwards is going to do enough to allow go bear a simple
Rotation here while Edwards helps him again by veering back into the body of T and getting a defensive rebound it’s a symbiotic relationship the Wolves help prevent do from being overworked and Dober helps the defense by being the League’s best rim protector so Conley gets screened here and McDaniels is so
Alert on this quick show out to allow Conley to recover if he isn’t then Harden has this Lane into Rudy waiting down here and that’s tough to stop so McDaniels gets himself back to Kawai before he can gain an advantage he and Anthony Edwards contain the Kawaii PG Corner action and stop
Anything perilous from happening there eventually it’s pick and roll Edwards digs in here to tag the roll man but he switched on to get out to PG up the top here as well because if he blows by the defense go is in trouble trying to get
Down here to stop that drive so ant stays in front forces George to kick it out and towns is doing the helping on the perimeter here to get a hand up in Harden’s face and help Force the miss this is high high level defense and the entire team is there helping insulate go
And when you get stops like that it helps Kickstart offense and all of a sudden Minnesota is turning that defensive Brilliance into run out points at the other end again McDaniels is out on the perimeter in a place where nobody wants to be with kawhai Leonard but the
Way he hassles him it extends The Possession allows towns to come up here and trap him and now it’s Go’s turn to come up and force Westbrook to pass out of fear and then get back and force T into a tough follow away look and for good measure he blocks Westbrook’s shot
At The Rim after the offensive rebound sometimes it’s just as simple as getting through screens and forcing scorers away from the paint to help go bear Kyle Anderson gets through this screen if he doesn’t George is curling around it and he’s AF Freight train rumbling at a stationary go bear in the
Paint instead it’s a bricked jumper because Anderson stays on his hip throughout the entire possession and when Minnesota do make a mistake teams need to capitalize on it an calls this switch here and they blow it that’s the kind of thing that leaves goar exposed trying to get back here and cover Harden
On that back cut but Ali missed that opportunity so now it’s Edwards locking up Leonard that means go can come here here and help with the double team McDaniel stops him from being punished for that double team by digging in here and then the Wolves complete the
Possession with a hard and fast close out Anderson comes up here to harden and then McDaniels is sprinting back out to the corner to get a really strong contest up on PG’s three-point attempt go might be the League’s best defender but defense only works if you have Five
Guys on a string like this everybody is helping each other and even a team with the Firepower that the Clippers have are going to have to make tough shots if that’s the case and this is another perfect example of that Anthony Edwards is the first helper stopping the pal
Drive here then McDaniels is here Fanning out to help the corner when Kawai gets past that close out go is helping on the drive he has to pass it out so Kyle Anderson has to come up here and stunt between two players at the top there’s no shot there so go bear digs
Back down into the middle to stop Harden’s Drive they force the pass again and McDaniels is back out here on kaai there’s still no shot available so goar steps up again to take Leonard on the drive and eventually finish off a ridiculous possession with a ridiculous Block it’s helpers helping helpers
Helping helpers that’s why the Timberwolves are the best defense in the league and that’s why they can’t be compared to the defenses of go Utah Jazz days and even when go is out where he doesn’t want to be on a perimeter Island it’s a different team around him Harden
Has him in a pickle here but Anderson steps over in gap help to stop this drive that forces the offense away from that go bear mismatch and he has never ever had someone who can make 20 foot Closeouts the way Jaden McDaniels can with his length and his foot speed in
The past that’s a wide open look but Daniels makes it a contested three and it ends up in a miss and look anything can happen between now and the end of the season and anything can happen in the playoffs as well but it’s unfair to paint Rudy Gober with the same brush
That he’s been painted with for all these years in Utah because he simply isn’t playing with the same level of defensive Talent this version of the Timberwolves isn’t just relying on him to clean up mistakes all night long their for misses themselves and covering for go when he happens to make a mistake
Or be pulled out of position by the offense that’s the difference and that’s why I think the wolves have a chance to break some playoff curses if they are able to stay healthy thanks again for watching another how and grows breakdown Please Subscribe for more Timberwolves content
This is a whole new ball game with a whole new set of defenders.

Ant doesn’t get enough credit for his defense
I was really anticipating Kawhi and PG to walk all over the drop coverage but they weren't able to do so comfortably due to the defense of Jaden, NAW, Ant, Slo mo and even KAT. It was such a treat to watch a whole team trying to prevent the other team's game plan and tried taking away the mid range as best as they could. Hopefully this game reminds ppl that going small isn't always gonna work when the team is locked in on D.
How much improvement has the defense made since early season? Feels like we still have so much to get better at and could be a historical level defense at this rate if we keep the focus and dedication.
Well said defense takes all 5 guys buying in!
I watched this twice.
The scramble close outs are fun to watch.
Jazz fan here. Stoked to see Rudy thriving in Minnesota. Been a fan of his since his rookie year. Losing him and Donovan wasn't easy for the fan base in Utah. I've always rooted for small market teams and the Timberwolves have a lot to like and root for beyond just Rudy. After the Jazz are out of the playoffs, and they are going to make the playoffs (unless Trader Dan blows it up again), I'm rooting for the Timberwolves to win it all!
Where is he now??? Only d?? Admit it or not jazz big man now is more flexible than Rudy..
One of best basketball videos what iv ever seen. Very good job, thank you.
As a Jazz fan my most fond memory of Rudy will always be how he did some time on the G-League team then bumped Enes Kanter right onto the trade block. We'd drafted Kanter (Freedom, whatevs) a couple years before and Gobert gave us something to cheer for and showed us just what level of hell we were in with feet-in-concrete Kanter as our big man in the middle.
Rudy HOF is a lock and he's worked hard for it.
I don't know why Gobert gets so much hate. He impacts the game immensely without the ball on both sides. He shrinks the floor on the defensive and he spreads the floor on the offensive end because if you leave him it's an easy dunk. One of the best defenders with one of the highest EFG% in the league. Efficiency matters. Allowing your teammates to shine by not dominating the ball matters. I can't believe people constantly try to put his game down. It is nonsense
Heck yea!
Awoooo
Best channel for wolves content this season
Some of the squads post-Hayward with Crowder, Ingles, Hood, Rubio, and Mitchell had great defense – but limited offense. Those squads were stymied by the Harden Rockets in the playoffs.
Didn't see it as much last year, but does Rudy run the floor both ways! For a big man, he gets up and down the court pretty quickly.
Gobert can guard any position at an elite level. Just imagine having five Goberts out there on defense. What he can't do is guard the perimeter and the interior at the same time. Nobody can. Against the Jazz, the Clippers played five out drawing Gobert out to the perimeter and because the rest of the team couldn't stay in front of their man the Jazz struggled hard. The situation didn't expose Gobert. It exposed the rest of the team. This is all coming from a Jazz fan.
Years back Twolves blow that game this team is different they rallied n finished the job 🐺
Another big Jazz fan here. Great to see Gobert thriving. Couldn't be happier for him and Mountain Mike.
I want Rudy Gobert to win a championship, not only because he deserves it. But i want to destroy the feelings of the people bullying him.
Jake, great job with these breakdowns.
Ain’t no godesend, bible bange4. Cmon now. Leve the superstition at your house.
I'm a Jazz fan and I agree. The Jazz always failed to get Rudy adequate perimeter defense help. Now that Rudy has perimeter Defenders to help him instead of bums who just let their man beat them because "Rudy will get it", he's really able to shine and do what he does best.
Thank you for your outstanding work ! As a French ex-player and coach, I've always found the criticisms unfair about him, these last years. And you nail it so right, when you talk about how defense has to be a collective thing.
I’m a lifelong Jazz fan who truly believes that Rudy Gobert might be second best defender of all time after Bill Russell. I got physically angry when the media and fans said “The Jazz fleeced the Wolves” with that trade. Um, no, the Wolves got one of the best defenders ever and they paid appropriately. I hope Rudy gets his 4th DPoY this season and if the Jazz can’t win it all— they can’t this year, obviously, despite getting hot as of late— then I hope the Wolves do.
You’re absolutely right that my Jazz didn’t have the defensive talent of guys like Ant and McDaniels. We had a bunch of lazy guys who funneled everything to Rudy and that’s why it didn’t work here.
Rudy is what made the Jazz good. Jazz fans are still in mourning because I believe he was the third most popular player in our history behind Stockton and Malone……(Of course you could throw in Pistol Pete in Jazz history) Rudy tried to hold Mitchell accountable for his non-existant defense. As you can see Mitchell can score, but cannot lead any team out of the First Round. Rudy is a legend in Utah.
The T-Wolves are in 1st place in the West right now, but don't forget that the 2021 Jazz with Gobert and Conley were the #1 seed and struggled in the playoffs.
Yep. I keep seeing clowns commenting on the nba channels clippers vs wolves highlight video from last might that Gobert gets played off the court. And while he technically got played off the court that was only due to the other poor defenders around him. Clarkson, mitchell, bojan, etc, etc. All sivs on defense.
The wolves dont have any weak defenders now. Also Gobert is not playong a drop coverage only scheme. He is playing a 50/50 drop/fly around aggressive scheme. He even often guards wings out on the perimeter and does really good doing so.
It's an apples to oranges comparison attempting to be used by casuals. Even todaymultiple pro channels came out and basically said the same thing about that game as i did. They were saying they came back against us while playing small ball 5 out but that is false. We actually killed them when they went small. Lol.
The idea here is to win the whole thing. If they win 1 series so what? Win the whole thing T Wolves!
