Team was lost to the Pelicans team with four essentially starters out for them yesterday they’re they’re three best players and Trey Murphy they lost them yesterday we called it an in excuse the other day we called it an inexcusable loss trying to explain how the Maverick

Lose a game like that trying to make sense of it couldn’t really put the blame on Jason kid and then they come back in this game MAV still don’t have Luca they don’t have Derrick Jones Jr they don’t have XM essentially Luca and two starters for the Mavericks and then

The Pelicans get all their guys back they they’re basically fully healthy and then they they lose the Mavericks get this win where they played incredible in the first quarter the middle two quarters I thought oh God here we go here comes this Mavericks team team back again they can’t defend this team they

They can’t get the right offense going and then the fourth quarter came back and the first quarter Maps just came back in this one and like wow what a what a weird like Whiplash uh the Whiplash in this game was almost as big as the Whiplash I’m having with the

Dallas weather this week we literally had a 65 degree day on when like Thursday Friday something like that and then this morning I woke up to 13 degrees and it was snowing outside I braved the elements and made it to the AAC and I’m still here on this Martin

Luther King Jr day and uh man what a whiplash moment for the Mavericks another one where the first time the Mavs played the Pelicans they played the two games in a row they destroyed them in the first one and got destroyed in the second one and now another Whiplash

Little series here I just make it make sense slightly I can’t make it make sense none of it makes sense it’s a hilarious like well they went 5 and two on the road on the home stand and if you told everyone that before it’ be like okay good perfect like probably lost to

The Knicks probably lost to the Timberwolves or like split one against the Pelicans but a good job nonetheless but uh it is games like these weal this is exactly we talked about a few days ago it’s games like these that make the losses so frustrating because it’s like

We see it with our own two eyes what this team can do it’s why I don’t like the record comparisons to this team like last year’s team it’s like they’re such different teams they are such different teams in such different places but uh man what an incredible their most

Improbable win of the season I think hands down just with how that how the flow of the game was going in the second and third quarter where you led by 16 at the end of the first quarter you were down by I think seven going into the

Fourth it was just a huge swing over the the second and third quarter and to pull out a win where it just didn’t like in the third quarter it didn’t even feel possible for them to tighten up and go on a run big enough their biggest

Deficit in this game was 10 and it felt at points like there’s no way this team could make up a 10-point deficit with how they’re playing and they pull it out at the end I mean incredible stuff it did feel like and the Pelicans have been good the Pelicans went on a

Five-game losing streak basically to start the season it ended with the that Mavs loss when they played those those two games um not back-to-back nights but back toback and then they’ve been 20 and 10 since then now now 20 and 11 which is a good number but they they’ve been

Really good like this te this Pelicans team has been very very good recently they’ve been you know like they should be up there with some without that five-game losing streak at the beginning of the Season they’d be up there with some of the best teams in the west right

Now and so this is a really I think you’re right this is probably the M’s most improbable win they got and they got it on the back of Kyrie Irving and Tim Hardway Jr just making ridiculous shots over and over again I mean there was a video I think Grant ASF posted it

Before uh that Kyrie was playing horse before before this game with some guys like playing with Sham God and some of the coaches then he was playing with some kids like hours before the game started and like it felt like that horse game just continued into this game where

Him and Tim were just playing horse with everybody else yeah no Timmy Timmy’s shooting in this game this is why we talk about on here like it’s it’s not it’s not a guy who just you can just throw in any trade you want and replace him for like a clink capella like that’s

That was a trade in the offseason that was something but now it’s just kind of clear and obvious that well you really kind of need Tim shooting and without his crazy shot making in this game and some of the threes he was making were crazy some of some of those crazy shots

I mean you probably get blown out in the third the lead probably becomes way too insurmountable and what kept the Mavericks in it even though the Pelicans scored 82 points in the second and third quarter combined is uh Kyrie and Timmy going off just keeping you connected

Enough that you could pull together in aable run in the fourth quarter and you know rely on the Pelicans just completely soiling their trousers which Willie Green made a move that I had not seen very much in the NBA with like three minutes and 53 seconds left he changed like almost the

Whole line yeah on the floor it felt like a hockey sub where he put in four he put in like legit four guys came onto the floor and they switched the whole lineup with like three minutes and 50 seconds left I was like wait what he just not even just an offense defense

Sub like literally almost the whole lineup got changed right in the middle of crunch time and I thought that that was very odd um but yeah this Pelicans team they uh Zion also got one rebound well they’re they’re 0 and seven now in three-point games that was a stat I saw

Floating around oh yeah after this one that’s kind of crazy a little bit some of that’s bad luck but they either blow teams out or they get blown out um because they’re good in transition and they don’t really it doesn’t really seem like they have that go-to scorer in

Crunch time situations should be Ingram should be Zion should be CJ McCollin that it just kind of hasn’t been they also don’t really have one single point guard besides Jose Alvarado who didn’t even play in this game after after having a a big impact in the first one

He got relegated for Jordan Hawkins I guess because Jordan Hawkins hasn’t played that much before the game the other night but yeah just Tim and Kyrie making shots keeping them in this game Tim makes some some really loud mistakes he had some really bad turnovers in this

One he had some really bad defensive possessions but you’re right like his his shooting kept them close in this game and just improbable shots I mean just hitting ridiculous stuff and it’s h him literally him as a player is one of the reasons why the Mavs have such a

High variance in terms of they can beat teams at any given night and they can lose to teams at any given night and it’s because of him and so when you do talk about a trade for Tim like you’ve got to get something back that’s guaranteed to me you’ve got to like

Improve in one area a lot so that you don’t have such a high variance right like maybe you won’t uh maybe you won’t beat some of these teams like this if you get somebody else but maybe you don’t lose to teams like the Grizzlies or like this pelan team the other night

Uh without some of his shooting too but I mean just insane stuff by the way Tim also 10 of 10 for the free throw line Kyrie 133 of 15 for the free throw line I’m sure we’ll discuss here and there some of the the calls tonight it was

Just one of the tightest weirdest games I’ve seen so far this season a horrible game to watch just from a basketball Fan’s perspective just so many free throws so many whistles I mean just Swallow at a certain point free throws I want to say this real quick about Tim

Too because I know his some of his turnovers are bad but he is being asked to do something he probably should not be being asked to do which is be the point guard essentially in some of these non- Kyrie minutes because out and Luc is out um and like Seth Curry just

Hasn’t been good this year so he he hasn’t he he hasn’t fit that role that you were kind of hoping for and Hardy’s just not ready to do that yet so yeah some of the turnovers are very bad but it’s also like Timmy shouldn’t be doing this it’s like how I feel sometimes

About some of like the Dwight pal stuff it’s like yes yes I get it but like Dwight pal shouldn’t even be in some of these positions he honestly shouldn’t even be playing very much if Lively and Maxi and Grant like and uh uh uh Derrik Jones Jr were all healthy

Right like he should even be playing too much like like he did tonight basically yeah he was good this play 16 minutes it’s fine it’s great 16 minutes five fouls you know part for the course in this game God everyone had five fouls it felt like you mentioned Tim you

Mentioned Tim playing point guard and that’s one of the things that started the second quarter where the Mavericks really started to give away the lead and really started to go down how did the Mavericks recover from that how did they win this game we’ll talk about all that more coming up

Will not be used I’ll tell you that [Laughter] much uh Mavs get the win in this one the first quarter was like it felt like the Mavs had just such a bounceback win or had such a bounceback as uh effort as far as their intentionality as far as

Their defense U the Pelicans were only in the game because of the free throws they shot 11 of 12 from the free throw line in the first quarter after the first quarter they had a 76% foul rate which the foul rate is how many free throws you uh free throws you you make

Per 100 field goal attempts so like they were on Bas to take like a million free throws in this game that was the only thing really keeping them in this game and I think some of it was the Pelicans just hadn’t woken up yet it was an early

Game was a 130 start yeah cold outside you know you’re coming in it’s just every everybody’s off their game and the Mavs coming off a bad loss so but the Mavs took advantage of it in the first quarter yeah and a lot of it too was just having size and Lively so they

Couldn’t do all the stuff out of valunas that they did a couple nights ago and then also having Maxi too to just sort of sty some of those Zion you know um drives and sort of help Build That Wall when it’s Maxi and Lively there it’s a

Lot more intimidating than some of the smaller Mavs units which they went to later in this game that were complete in total Fiasco but um yeah it was a really good start I mean obviously like you said the Pelicans just weren’t really playing that great early on and then

They did turn it on significantly in the second and third quarters but yeah was it was a good start um lots of fouling that didn’t really go away throughout the rest of the game and the Pelicans started making shots to go along with the fouling so then the the the defense

Really collapsed after that but yeah I think I don’t know how much of it to be honest with you is the Mavericks were really good defensively early on and how much of it was the Pelicans were just really rough offensively it’s a mixture of both I wanted to maybe save this for

A little later but it it you’re right to bring it them now Lively and Maxi like made a big impact they played them together at some time yeah sometimes in in this game and Lively just starting he had three offensive rebounds in the first quarter he had two defensive

Rebounds he altered a couple of shots jonis valunas postup a CJ McCollum drive just the ones that I’m remembering off the top of my head and like just having him and just having some size there makes it like changes the game for what the Mavericks do yeah he’s such an imp I

Saw Tim KO tweet like I don’t think it’s hyperbolic to say that Derrick Lively literally saved this era of Mavs basketball because he came in and brought exactly exactly what they needed and he’s a rookie a 19-year-old rookie still yeah if they didn’t draft Lively or if Lively wasn’t ready or something I

Don’t I honest to God do not know what this season looks like like it’s probably a disaster you got like if you’re kind of a Doomer about this season I can’t even imagine how it would look if if they did not draft this 19-year-old kid out of Duke who’s just

Like Tim KO said probably saved the Luca era honest to God and was supposed to be a project too but he comes in and like he’s so poised and all the great things we’ve said about Lively like bring bring them all back for this one because he

Was that good and he was just they didn’t have the pick and roll stuff going as well because Luca wasn’t playing obviously that that didn’t pop as well but still the rebounding the altering shots at The Rim just being a big body like they just needed him so

Badly and he was so evident in that first quarter running the floor too he had that one where that one play in the first quarter where he was running the floor and got fouled and went to the free throw line hit both of his free throws just a huge impact yeah and uh

You saw the 19-year-old body on display twisted his ankle you would you you know what I’m talking about cuz uh I’m not 19 years old if I twist my ankle no no no put that thing back put that thing away what the put that thing away I

Twist my ankle it’s like maybe a three to four year recovery period before I’m like feeling like oh my ankle kind of feels fine now he’s like back out there like nothing ever happened no running around made of titanium and he’s only going to get stronger too I keep

Remembering that like I I watched him I see him next to Jonas Val chunis I’m like oh yeah this is probably the smallest livel is ever going to be as far as like putting on weight and all that he’s only going to add more and like he’s just gonna be a big problem

Well Jonas is also one of the biggest beefy boys in the league so just a huge beef boy he’s a massive Beef Boy what went wrong in the second and third quarters for you um the Pelicans just decided oh wait I can just walk right

Into the rim it was the classic like the Mavericks have all these Defenders where they’re either too small the like the guys who can keep guys in front of him are sometimes just too small and get bullied and the guys who are big enough to not get bullied have a really hard

Time keeping guys in front of them so it was like this tough match up I thought the help defense Deon Harris was pointing this out on the on the broadcast too like the help defense was really bad where the guys in the gaps who should be there to help close off

Lanes were either way too late and it led to a lot of fouls or either just not there at all which led to a lot of layups um and the Pelicans just relentlessly I mean it was a Relentless attack on the rim in the second and

Third quarter I don’t even know how many threes they made it felt like Next To None yeah three of seven in the second quarter and then in the third quarter they were four of five in in the quarter so they hit they hit a good amount of

Them but yeah didn’t didn’t take a ton because they didn’t have to no yeah and then the free throw barrage I mean just a horrible game to watch a lot of them were fouls to be fair but it’s just oh we should mention I I I teased

This before the start of the second quarter was really where the the lead just started eroding away so quickly yeah kids started with a curry Tim Hardway Jr AJ Lawson Maxi and Derrik Lively uh lineup which is literally five finishers on offense like five guys that

Finish plays as far as catch and shoot and uh like pick and roll like the just five finishers and I was just like where are you expecting this offense to come from with Tim and Curry Tim and Curry just haven’t been good enough like Tim Curry is a great actor and like an

Amazing person but Tim and Curry just not getting it done for you I have to Google search Tim Curry on offense he’s he was the Nigel Thornberry voice he was um he was he was hook and and hook you know just a legend Tim all right yeah I

I I I see I know who he is now I’m I’m bad with names that’s it show me a face and I’m good but that was brutal 14-2 start in that second quarter because I think they just the offense they’re making terrible mistakes they couldn’t

Get any real shots up and that was some of the complaints that that Reggie and I were making yesterday on the show about kid not having that second gear on offense to turn to but coming up the Mavs did figure out some way to turn it

Uh and Tim I mean it’s just really the Tim Hardway Jr Kyrie Irving show and Josh Green hit a couple of big shots down the stretch Grant Williams had a couple really nice plays but it was Kyrie Irving just going out and getting a bucket when you needed a bucket and

That’s that’s against a great defender like herb Jones who is playing really aggressively on him especially off ball to just prevent Kyrie even getting the ball uh Kyrie just made a lot out of nothing which is just what he does and why you need a guy like that on your

Team huge he he checked back in in the fourth quarter I was tracking the uh the non Kyrie minutes the Mavs got outscored 17 to 23 which is not terrible got outscored by six without Kyrie on the floor but still something to watch and he comes back into the game at about

Like the 9:30 Mark they were down by eight at that point and you’re just like all right how are they going to create enough offense and how are they gonna get enough stops to get the to get the win or to even come back at all and then

A couple minutes go by it’s kind of like the same thing Mavs are down 104 to 111 they get in the bonus Josh misses two free throws so bad bad taking advantage of that situation and kid puts in Kyrie Tim Josh Green Maxi and Lively I’m like

All right here we go this is it this turn this like next couple minutes right here will turn the tide for the Mavericks either they’re going to get beat in these minutes and they’re going to lose this game or they’re going to Kickstart a comeback and they’ll keep it

Close and maybe win maybe not the next couple of minutes there they have some of the best plays that they they had all all game and it came off of a Tim Hardway three off of two Derek Lively offensive rebounds that was huge and then another Lively offensive rebound

Where he just ripped the ball away from yonas valent Tunis I I just wrote in my notes Lively huge big man rebound yeah in that play and they kicked out another Tim Hardway junor 3 and the Mavs took the lead back in that spot at about the

415 Mark and like that stretch right there from like 6:30 to 4:15 was just such a big run it was uh not a big run as far as points it was an 80 run but they just needed an 880 run like that they just needed something to like

Kickart them and uh that carried them basically through the end of the game yeah some of those I mean the Derek the offensive rebounds like won the game for the Mavericks because they like you said they got two threes off of those off of offensive rebounds from Derrick livley

Down the stretch in a game they won by five so obviously really big but those rebounds a lot of Derrick Livy’s rebounds come from him being a smart rebounder but also just being a freak athlete and being really big and just going up and getting them these were

Like grown man like you said just going up against one of the stronger Sitters in the league in Valen chunis and just literally RI like forcing his will and ripping the ball out of his hands was incredible and then he that one Tim three off that Lively rebound the ball’s

Flying around and Tim gets a little sidestep dribble off of a wild close out I mean it was when Tim hit that shot I was like oh my God they might win this game like it hadn’t sunk in then that that three made it a two-point game with

Four minutes left 44 left I was like oh my God they actually might do this and then uh from then on out it was Tim and Kyrie just making tough shots and that’s what they needed down the stretch I thought are you gon talk about this they

Knew that they couldn’t get stops okay well yeah grant grant had they plays and they elected with 17 seconds left in a two-point game to intentionally foul Zion instead of playing defense what an interesting decision it was a decision based on Personnel I think yeah because yeah 17

Seconds left Mavs are up by they’re up by two and there’s a bunch of people on the on Twitter like oh my god did they know did Maxi know that they didn’t have a foul to give did they know that they’re only up by two and I was like I

Think he just did that on purpose because I think I think that they didn’t think and he missed one of the free throws so it worked out yeah it it ended up being the right thing and then Kyrie’s going to make his free throws on

The other end so um but yeah I also do want to mention in clutch Grant Williams He kid stuck with Grant Williams and he finally made a three with like three minutes 30 seconds left and it was like I was just cracking up and there was some Pelicans media people here and I

Just looked over at them they’re like oh my god really the one time he’s going to make a play is like in the in crunch time when they desperately need it did it after he had like air balled that other three where he he held the ball

The whole time well well that that three from Grant is like what you kind of see from Maxi when he’s struggling when he’s like really indecisive or Josh Green where he got the ball and there was one second on the shot clock and he had to shoot yeah like there was no thinking

About it was all right just shoot that thing like you have no choice and it went in and then he did airball another one but everyone was making fun of grant for that one I don’t know if that was his fault got a Grenade yeah he got a

Grenade and and a pretty good close out but kids sticking with Grant though you’ve got to give him credit because I thought he made some good plays down the stretch yeah he’s not like his his game is not going to stand out to you in the

Box Score seven points one of four from three he had that other layup and then he had another shot too uh but he had seven assists in this game he had that he had that huge pass um to Josh uh yeah it was a minute 30 left

Kyrie gets doubled Mavs are used to getting doubled Luka gets doubled all the time and then Grant was the the guy that got the ball out of the double team team and just Chuck that ball from the left basically the left side of the court all the way to the right side of

The court right to Josh Green in the corner and Josh Green made another clutch three got to give him credit because now that’s two clutch threes for Josh in the last like three games that he’s made uh but Grant Williams kid sticking with Grant Williams worked in

This one yeah it it really is a very encouraging sign how comfortable this Mavericks team is playing in the short role in those four on three situations when a guy gets doubled like it it kind of does feel like no matter who it is no matter who the guy in the middle is

Whether it’s Lively who’s really good at it pal who’s also good at it or Grant like feels like they make the right play almost every time and that is going to be very big especially in postseason settings where you’re probably going to see that coverage a pretty fair amount

Down the stretch of games to have guys who are very comfortable in that situation is really important and yeah you gotta give a ton of credit to Grant I just can’t I still can’t believe that coaching decision to intentially foul I honestly I I don’t think this is

Me saying this in hindsight I think it was genius it’s one of what was there’s a play last last year where we go did kid do that on purpose and then he comes in the post game and he’s like yeah we did that on purpose like he might be a

Genius there I can’t remember what game it was I have to go back and listen to some of the shows but like he might be a genius if he made that and like I’m leaning I’m leaning in for all the audio listeners like he is a basketball genius like for as much as

We’re gonna like talk about Jason kid oh he’s so stupid how could he not play this guy and how could he this so obvious he is a basketball genius like literally one of the smartest basketball Minds we’ve ever seen as a player right and like some of it apparently hasn’t hasn’t

Translated as a coach because that’s not all the same stuff but like he what he is one of the smartest basketball mins yeah he forgets more about basketball in a single day than we’ll probably ever know about the sport there’s so many jokes I could take with but like because you know you’re

Probably not getting a stop in the 17 seconds you probably know you’re not getting a stop intentionally fouling if he makes both we’ll get the last shot and then he does does miss one and and the Mavs were in the bonus too so they knew they were getting free throws
