Hopefully uh many more to come through throughout the season and hopefully a playoff run we get to witness but um you know I’m doing well but you know last night it felt like the suns were not doing well for would you say 46 and a

Half minutes it is about what it was man it was it was brutal I remember I remember looking at you at the end the third and said how’s this going to go man like you know is it going to be blowout city or are we gonna

Get you’re right you said every time you expect you know it to be a blah they they show some some signs of Life they don’t want to get blown out and embarrassed and that was the case I think Pride really did kick in there um especially you know vogle kind of I

Would I guess you could say swallowing his pride a little bit because he loves you know big men he loves big lineups that’s his traditional Mo really as as a coach but to go small to lean offense is just so unlike Frank Bogle but you know

We saw some early early results and I say early but we’re at game 40 or so you know it’s it should it shouldn’t have took this long but it did for for many VAR for various reasons but kind of glad that we got to see what that lineup was capable

Of that’s Theory the game right um I think is that that small ball lineup and it’s hard to like you know we could do the thing of giving them you know you know what for how the first part of it went out went on but the NBA season’s kind of like that

And you know I don’t honestly think it’s fair to pile on on that stuff cuz if we had just just seen a 20-point loss again I do think last night’s game was kind of its own variety of weird and so the fact that they got out of their own

Heads and and were able to answer I do think that’s the story even though like you said 46 and A2 minutes of Sacramento leading and really Two And A Half full quarters of ugly I do think it’s one of those games where the ending and the way

They answered it matters much more than how they got themselves in that hole in the first place but I’m interested in this pelic yeah yeah go ahead it is funny you mention that because you know we always talk about you know as analysts and and and writers like process matters in the

NBA more than more than anything especially through a long season but at the same time especially for a coach that could have might might have been on the hot seat and some you know in some circles results matter just as much if not more at this point of the season

So I think he was asked some version of a question like that and was like I I could care less uh we won eight of 11 right like and I I think that’s kind of how everybody feels right now but so let’s talk about the small ball lineup

Because I think you had the data you tweeted it out I think they were like plus 18 or something with those five guys on the court the part of me that thinks it’s not sustainable mostly results in from the size of the other four guys outside of Durant not being

Big enough like I saw people or heard people like they were talking about it on the radio today and obviously some chatter online and everything of it’s the sun’s death lineup it’s like you can’t compare it to other similar lineups because one ktie didn’t even play the five in the death lineup

Draymond Green did and two that lineup also had Klay Thompson and Andre galz so you’re talking about you’re actually big at almost every position the Suns in that lineup were pretty much small at every single position with Gordon and Booker and Beal and Allen so how much do

You think how much more of that do you think we’ll see how’s sustainable is that particular unit or do we maybe see a different version of KD at Center lineups to close games I thought you brought up a really great Point uh towards the end of your show

Today or yesterday whichever what you want to call it after after the Kings game right um where you mentioned you know you don’t want to look ahead too far ahead to New Orleans yet so trying to digest this game and the results that we saw but at the same time you kind of

Do hope that vogle doesn’t just ditch it for another emergency situation and I would call it being down 22 emergency situation in the NBA right uh although KD said that you can come back um but you know I think I would love to see it sprinkled in even in matchups that might

Be deemed unfavorable even against teams that could abuse you just to see how it works and and to get data points I I think Gerald Gerald Borg even mentioned like it had only that lineup had only played just a few minutes just a few like single digigit minutes heading into

Um and heading to the game against Sacramento now a lot of that is injury base we know know you know bill was out for a good chunk of the time that everyone else was available um so I think you know if you just get some data

And see how it how it defends because you know the offense is really um taking the storylines you know they scored 23 points on 11 possessions you’ll take that every day of the week I mean that’s just incredible stuff um but the defense should get recognized I think you know

Their switch everything scheme in within that lineup really flattened out the offense for Sacramento took them out of a lot of actions made them go to their second third fourth options and burn a lot of shot clock in the process so you know I I think to if vogle wants to I

Wouldn’t even call it gutsy but just experiment man I understand like this is probably not the time that suns suns fans want to hear experimentation being halfway through the season and you’re in what six seven that 678 range still um but it’s like you know I think that’s

Necessary to see what the this lineup can do because we don’t know I mean all we have to go off of running is just this last game and it could be a screaming success into the playoffs or it can take some bumps some ruses and I

I think we need to see if they can uh if they can withstand against some other lineups that might make them suffer a little bit more because let’s be honest Sacramento High pick and Ral offense dple handoff offense uh led by Deen Fox and sabonis orchestrating at the top

They didn’t really have that KD like score that can just Trump uh switches you know you want to switch against us okay well we’ll we’ll make you pay for this like a kawhai PG type type score that can just rise over the top I think if you experiment that lineup in other

Matchups you can see where it does well and where it doesn’t and we might you know two weeks from now we might be talking about it as don’t ever try that again but we don’t know until we see a little bit more I mean I think the thing

Is right your point about reps is is the right one I think it’ll work I think it will work in some matchups like there’s not really a doubt in my mind and people have been weird about the Kad Center stuff I know I’ve been joking about it

On Twitter on the show throughout the year people are like all right you were right it’s like I didn’t come up with that he’s been playing Center like people think of it as my thing I don’t understand it’s it’s just one of the things he’s done and especially since uh

You know really like his last season in in Golden State he was he was playing a lot of Rim protection kind of role and then obviously in Brooklyn he did it a ton you know they had Bruce Brown was like their their big man in certain lineups because of KD’s ability to do

That stuff so I think it will work it’s just a matter of getting comfortable with it and having an answer for different types of units and that to me is the other part of it where I think ideally it’s probably not such a The Big

Three are going to be in there but if you can get even one of these other wings and forwards to hit or you can get somebody at the deadline who can fit into some of those lineups I think that’s kind of the next step for this thing some another switchable Defender maybe

Somebody who even has a little more size who can actually provide some secondary Rim protection if KD is out on the perimeter um or even just help defense in the way of you know drawing charges getting in the way swiping at at drivers whatever those are the types of things I

Think you’re still just never going to get when you’re playing that small um but yeah I think the thing is if it becomes a weapon you can even throw it at teams that you don’t think of it being a good matchup right like Denver or uh the Lakers or

Whatever and you can throw them off you can go to a Zone and with that group and you can H if you have answers I think that’s part of how you start to actually form an identity and those types of things we’ve been talking about all year

So uh let me just throw this at you real quick uh 30 seconds or so mentality wise you’ve been around this team all all season long did it feel like something that would kind of galvanize them and and be a little bit of a sigh of relief for this group to you me

Psychologically I do believe that and I’m not typically someone that believes in like you know turning points or you know this game mattered more than the other 41 home games they have but or 40 home games they have but I do believe you know this this is something that

They found some stuff that can work and it’s all about trying it more and more more and being healthy but I to your point like I do believe that it’s something that um you know especially you know all all the motivational tactics your tactics that you know Vogal

Was doing uh apparently doing in the Huddle and stuff you know and and getting on as guys and holding people accountable and I think you know you and I have seen Katie’s body language holding people accountable and getting frustrated and I I just think that Triumph is something that they can build

On I now they might come out and lose a few games here and we all look like idiots but you know I I think as long as they’re healthy this was only a step forward absolutely all right let’s get to these Grayson Allen I don’t even want to call them

May look like so Jake fiser had this quote in his latest piece at Yahoo sports with some rumors and gossip around the NBA he said Phoenix continues to be mentioned as one of the more active teams on the tradem market hoping to find rotational upgrades behind its

Big three the Suns have explored with the combination of Grayson Allen and SE little could bring back to the valley though the Suns have only have their four second round picks and Allen has been arguably Phoenix’s most important player behind Devin Booker and Kevin Durant how crazy would they be to trade this

Guy I think pretty crazy to actually pull the trigger uh and do it I don’t think crazy to just canvas the league and see what’s going on um but it it’s hard that’s a hard line to walk whenever you’re you you don’t want Grayson to feel slighted or feel like he’s just

Being used as trade bait or you know or that they don’t value him I think that’s I I’d be shocked if he actually did believe that you know they’re just trying to get rid of me um but he has to know it’s a business and I you know I

Understand the the whole you know transactional side of it you want to see what you can possibly get in return doesn’t mean they’re going to pull the trigger doesn’t mean they’re going to do it so I think to to to answer you like it would be crazy to get rid of your of

The best shooter the NBA right now um percentage wise efficiency wise um unless it yielded some just insanely talented defensive star that you know could could come out there and and and be your Swiss army knife and be what you know what KD kind of was last

Night yeah that’s how I see it unless you’re getting a clear-cut legitimate starting caliber like Wing Defender 3 and D type player I I don’t see how you could trade him and I don’t think they’re getting that for him you know for him little in seconds I I don’t I

It’s not that those guys may be value-wise like you couldn’t find somebody it’s just they’re not out bidding anybody with that package right so I think that’s where they’re going to run into some trouble and that’s why I’ve kind of assumed that nurkic and Allen both are going to stay put we’ll

Talk about nurkic to close the show in the next segment um are there any have you spent any time thinking about with the two trade ceptions the Suns have I do think little is somebody that I I would expect to see I doubt James Jones is maybe thrilled

That he’s not in the rotation right now because he’s not getting to uh get reps and show teams what he can do if he were to be traded I think most teams are probably wondering is he still healthy he’s technically active in these games he’s not playing but I think he could be

Traded have you thought of any sort of targets or anybody that they could realistically get that would improve this team or are you just looking at it as kind of this is their group the latter because I’m not you know I guess my brain just doesn’t go into

Trade mode until like February 1st which is C it should you know you should be thinking about it all the time but I just care more about the uncor product instead of the hypotheticals but you know it’s just it is what it is I think I think this is their group um any

Upgrade is going to be very Mar like it’s going to be minimal I don’t think it’s gonna uh I don’t think it’s gon to move the needle for this team either way like I If they make a trade and it doesn’t work out I don’t think it’s G to

Make them worse than what they are because they still have in supremely talented Superstar scorers that can get them to let’s just say 46 47 wins minimum I don’t know what they’re on Pace for now but um you know it’s but then again I don’t think you

Bring in someone using Grayson Allen and the SE little salary and that’s not going to yield you something that is a game changer it’s going to vaun you into the top four in the west so I think they’re going to be stuck in this in this kind of

Range where they are in the west based on what they have um but that’s that’s assuming full health too so you know you if you’re James Jones are you exploring the trade market because you anticipate or not anticipate but you know that there’s a slim chance that this team

Stays healthy like so it’s a ticking Time Bomb It feels like with these guys right so do you try to go get you more insurance by getting some better players um because you know you and I at least I believe like I don’t think the bench is

Good I don’t think the rotation I don’t think the rotation is uh Championship caliber definitely not so um you know I I I just think that you know they’re going to need their Shooters to keep to stay hot they’re going to need Gordon to be more um more consistent with with his

Production as well that’s for sure but you know and Gordon would be the guy right Brenan that that you could trade because he’s older but I mean the minimum salary like what are you getting back for minimum salary nothing so he doesn’t there’s nothing there there’s nothing tangible there to to dangle on

The trade market if you’re the Rockets you’re getting cam Whitmore for trading Eric Gordon that’s what they got uh last last deadline that that worked out pretty well for them but look are still are still talking about that came it’s a it’s a rough one in hindsight but okay

So yeah I agree I don’t think they’re going to be able to make a huge move I’ve talked plenty about what those options could be so I won’t uh belabor that point but you have also on the Grayson side of things obviously the other thing looming

Over all this is he’s a a free agent after this season so I don’t think it’ll be terribly hard to give him a pretty decent raise and retain him if they really want to especially if they were to move on from Little or some of these

Minimum guys you know uh his cap hold is is pretty big I I don’t even know if he’ll make that much money we’ll see I I would expect them to make a pretty good effort to keep him so I’m not super worried about trade him so you don’t

Lose him for nothing like you got to win now you got to improve the roster and you can’t pretend like you’re going to lose him if you think there’s a chance you keep him but on the court you wrote an article about him recently at Forbes uh detailing a lot of

The different things that he does and I thought you had a lot of good numbers besides just three-point shooting which gets the most attention but also his floater shooting his at Rim shooting his transition game his passing it just feels like he’s really blossomed overall as a player and that’s the thing Frank

Vogle has been harping on with him all season long is just how how versatile and how balance he is and and that he’s not just a shooter not just a you know three in D guard type of player what stood out to you most digging into the

Numbers in the film about what we’re seeing from Grayson that maybe doesn’t get a lot of shine yeah I appreciate you mentioning that I think you know what stuck out immediately on tape but also just looking at the numbers because numbers despite people not being you know analytic you know big analytic fans

Like they can tell you a lot about the the players play style and how often they’re being used in what situations what context um I think simplifying I think what Phoenix has done maybe it’s just the the product of being around those three scores and this is kind of

How you have to operate if you’re going to be in those lineups and do well um is that his game is Just simplified now it’s either I’m spotting up or if if that situation doesn’t call for me to spot up if if there’s a lot of movement

Or or maybe a pick and roll is Shifting the defense to one side um and people are helping off of me then maybe the maybe the correct play or correct read in that moment is not to just spot it maybe it’s to cut to the rim so I think

You know you mentioned and I agree with this like he’s not just a shooter and I think vogel’s even said he’s not just a shooter he’s a dynamic offensive role player for us um yes that is true but he is spotting up the most he’s ever had in

His career 50% of his possessions have ended in spot UPS before that his average was about 32 33% in Memphis and Milwaukee so 17 percentage points uptick in proportion of of spotting up means that it is a lot of just him standing there waiting being a spacer which is

Just as valuable as like being a spacer Brenan I know you know this like it’s just it’s just as valuable as being like a lock down Defender because of what that does to your offense what that does to the other guys around you and the space it gives them the freedom it gives

Them on the court in the half court um but if it’s not if it’s not spotting up he’s doing an excellent job of of knowing when to cut um and and coming off dple handoffs making the read out of those um I I just think that he’s intellectually what they need in in

Those roles like it’s just something they didn’t really have maybe it’s because it’s you know the the guys they had in the previous iterations of this team when you know Monty and CP like their role players were just too young or too raw at the time I think Grayson

Allen’s at the point point of his career with 27 28 years old I believe where it’s like he has seen everything he playing in that offense in Milwaukee which you know deep playoff they didn’t go on a deep playoff run last year because they just fell apart in the

Miami series but I I just think he has he has found a a a Groove and found a sweet spot of of playing in different offensive systems especially that you know Memphis they were running gun up and down they were so fast now he’s playing in more of a slow methodical off

Defense uh I just think it’s all clicking for him and and this is he’s being used in the in the perfect way yeah I think he’s invaluable to this team it’s it’s part of the reason I mean it’s the whole reason that he’s starting I don’t think they would have expected

That early on that when Beal was back he would still be in the starting lineup because they probably would have expected well one of the Wings will step up and Grayson can be sort of a six-man maybe we’ll close with him sometimes but you know he’s probably going to be more

Of a role player more of a small minutes guy guy and he’s just made himself too important you know they off their identity right now is is outscoring people and and he’s a big reason why they’re able to do that and he just seems to have a it’s not even chemistry

It’s just I mean it is but it just feels natural it’s not even like oh this specific action and these two guys it it works really well for this reason it’s like he just seems to blend perfectly into kind of the read and react flow

That they want to build and so he’s as big of a part of I think their identity and kind of off offensive style as any of the the the star players are right now just because he’s been so involved in such a seamless fit into it but let’s

Recently one I feel like I’ve notice his impact a little less but I also feel like I haven’t been as keyed into him because the big three has been coming back and he hasn’t had to be as involved and everything else obviously some of the small ball stuff bu bow he hasn’t

Been so prominent but he’s still the starting center for this team and some of the numbers would tell you he’s having a pretty darn good season season so how would you kind of I don’t know if you want to do like an an a to F type of

Thing but how would you sort of like raer evaluate nerk season halfway through uh his first year in Phoenix here yeah I think you know it would just rate as fine I think I think he is a fine serviceable starting center um you know I’ve seen people say he’s like the

You know one of the worst starting centers in basketball and I again I have not listed out all 30 starting centers or start caliber guys because I know some guys come off the bench that probably should start um but you know I think that if you’re asking or when the

Season started if you were to ask what was the best outcome or the I guess the the outcome you would expect the the most or most frequently out of houon Mage this had to have been it man like you couldn’t have expected him to just

Come and be a constant like 20 and 10 guy like that’s just not who he was at this stage of his career and honestly I think the reason reason I was inspired to kind of write about him and and and take a deep dive on him is because I

Feel like a lot of suns fans have have turned and said like you know they they need a well they they were probably on this train from the get-go but it’s like you know they need someone that’s more defensive minded or um they need someone

Some more of a low post score and it’s like no you you don’t need you don’t need a low post score you do need someone that’s more defensive minded but that that came with the flaws that that was inherent in his game I don’t know who watched the Portland tril Blazers

During his career and and the system that Terry Scots and chony bips was implementing and thought that he was going to come in and be some Dynamic like different player I mean he’s 29 he’s not a finished product I I think you know as you get into your 30s you

Can still add different elements to your game Brook Lopez is a great example of that offensive Center to begin his career in Brooklyn now or he was I don’t know about this year but defensive stalwart for Milwaukee in that drop coverage scheme but again like I just I

Don’t think that’s in the cards for nerk it’s just what stuck out to me on tape and at least you know watch him play just in the arena every night he’s consistently showing effort I don’t think effort’s ever a thing for him he’s slow but I think people get that

Confused like he’s not trying hard he’s just he’s just slow compared to at least what we’ve seen but again I think I would rather have the effort piece and the fact that he’s been probably the best teammate on this on this team I mean you know you hear nothing but great

Things from Booker from Bill from Duran about ner nothing but great things I know they’re not going to talk anything negative about their teammates but it just it just jumps off the screen uh his contributions to this team screen setting rolling all that good stuff I mean and he’s available too right that’s

One of the other things if you were to go back to the beginning of the season and say what are you expecting from nkit you would have looked at the games played column probably first and foremost and that’s been a real issue for him now obviously knock on wood and

And that that only is true until it’s not not true but I think that’s been really big and is a big part of the teammate stuff is he just he’s he’s out there every night right the only games he missed was because of the death of a family member and that was obviously

Something he had to deal with but that wasn’t even an injury so uh he I think he’s missed maybe one or two games with injury but that was the longest stretch that the Suns had to survive without him was was not even health related I think big

Picture what you said about what he could be or what they Suns fans or any of us watching the Suns might ideally want is to me highlights a thing that’s just true about the NBA right now which is it’s really hard to find the perfect Center because obviously like there’s these

Behemoth who are winning MVP every year who you have to have somebody for but then does that fit your scheme is that how you want to play how much are you paying those players what do they do on offense if they’re more defensively inclined how many centers can you reasonably roster if you’re

Trying to check all the so I think it’s just you know maybe the luxury of having the Durant stuff we talked about early on maybe a little bit of just the nature of who was available but I think he’s been better this season in almost every category right he’s been

Uh I think offensive rebounding shot blocking passing his uh his assist rate is up and his turnover rate is down and I think all those things are are are solid you brought up the rebound rebound rate Brendan and that is something that you don’t really think about it’s like
