If I’m remembering correctly, it’s been over 30 years since I read it, but in Jordan Rules, Sam Smith basically said they had to trade Charles Oakley to keep him away from Jordan. Oakley had become a terrible influence on Jordan and the organization was afraid it would ruin his career.

Bill Cartwright was integral to that first 3 peat. While Jordan was the obvious leader when it came to the game, Cartwright was the approachable leader who many players went to for things outside of the game.
Oakley was cut from the same cloth as Jordan. The team needed a more emotional balance.

Cartwright was so important to those teams. They needed a center, a pivot point for the triangle. And they got two out of the trade. Oakley could rebound but he wasn’t big enough or athletic enough to anchor the inside.

Not sure why you think this was bad. We got Cartwright and Perdue in return. Both played big roles in the championships.

Strickland was a ball dominant pg who would have taken the ball out of Jordan and Pippen’s hands. Pax and BJ were the perfect complements to MJ.
As others have mentioned the Bulls needed a locker room leader which Cartwright provided.
I know Jerry Krause gets a lot of shit but everything he did before 98 worked out really well for the team.

Was worth it just for Cartwrights bows, he was a tough SOB that was also a leader and someone not intimidated by MJ.
