Rozier to the Heat. Doc to the Bucks. Digesting all the Celtics rivals’ moves with Bobby Marks
[Applause] At the a mo [Applause] round take that the Celtics Talk podcast is presented by 24 autogroup.com 11 locations across New England what’s up everybody off day edition of the Celtics Talk podcast boy do we have some stuff to talk about a wild wild 48 hours in the association thought you know we’d be
Digesting that Celtics win over the Dallas Mavericks and all that went well there no like we got 70o games from Joel embiid We have Terry Rosier old friend being traded down to the Rival Miami Heat we have coaching changes in Milwaukee midseason and for the team with the second best record in
Basketball it is wild and uh the Eastern conferences is particularly wild I had to call my buddy Bobby marks front office Insider for ESPN to break down all the moves figure out like who should I be worried about most here in the Eastern Conference but also dive into
The trade deadline coming up will we see any activity from the Celtics bobb’s been in that room he knows what it’s like to to build a championship level team and the tough decisions you have to make thought there was some good insight about how Brad might navigate this
Process but also understanding that uh it’s going to be tough for the team based on the resources they have then later in the program uh later tonight the uh uh depending on when you are listening to this the main Celtics are in action on NBC Sports Boston I got a
Chance to catch up with JD Davidson seconde guard talk about his progress up in Maine uh and the potentials you know like let’s say the Celtics need to downshift one of these guards in the second half of the Year could JD be someone that shows up much like nimi
Isada has filled in as a as a center could could JD get some reps here in Boston what it’s like being around the team when he has been there so jam packed episode let’s get to it let’s start with our talk with Bobby marks all right Bobby I was just telling
You I don’t like to bug people when they’re busy when like there’s a lot going on and I swear I as I prepared to reach out to you there like the NBA we’d had some big scoring nights we’d had some like activity around the league then Terry Rosier gets traded the drama
In Milwaukee and I said oh man he’s going to be the busiest person on Earth but there’s also no one I’d rather I’d rather sort through this with than you so I I appreciate you joining us no I appreciate it I um you know it’s funny
We’re in this kind of this window where like I I travel with my laptop even if I go get gas I uh yesterday I was I was out for a run and Zach low had texted me and says hey you around for a pot I think might something might happen with
Miami today and then and then it comes in and then like you then Adrian Griffin stuff and it’s yeah it’s been you know between and we rarely you know the um the mid mid January trades it’s been a kind of a rarity um I know um ruy
Hachimura got traded a year ago and even Boston made that you know I think they traded Joel Anthony um for like uh cash shavings or you know something like that and um we had seum we have um this recent trade with um with roier we had
Anobi at the end of end end of December and and it’s it’s basically it’s like hey why do we have to wait to the deadline to do a deal if there’s something we like you know let’s go out and and uh and do it now because it
Might get a little bit worse as far as maybe another team kind of jumps in here I I feel like Danny Ang and Brad Stevens both sort of adopted that along the way where they’re like get you worked on early more time to integrate these players remember R didn’t Rondo get
Traded to D was it the Dallas trade yeah I think that was early January yeah it was um it was right around when I December we always say the December 15 The Unofficial deadline or what you know or start of trade season and um I remember because I was with I was still
In U in new I think it was New Jersey then um when he got moved um at that time yeah and then they made like 54 subsequent moves that year that was the year where they just like every time I looked up they made some sort of a deal
Like Austin Rivers was a Celtic for 37 seconds and then he was not uh all right so I looking through this at in in a Celtics lens I mean every every one of their primary Rivals have done something like embiid goes for 70 the Pacers ad seum Nicks adding anobi the uh heat
Adding Rosier I guess which one jumps out at you most like where do where do we start like what is the what I think the the Milwaukee drama is probably the most like crazy part of this but like what which team do you think is most decidedly better based on all these
Recent movings well I I think New York certainly um with an noi just because they get him on um December 30th and they’ve basically have like a six- week window before the deadline gets here so they can maybe go out and maybe make another move here but um certainly fits
As far as what tibs is you know has done there defensively um you know um you know certainly scoring wise you know the ability to make a corner three and can give you 15 16 points again and I think the biggest thing was that they they
Kept all their draft picks um you know they traded a second um which is actually a pretty good second it’s a Detroit second um but they still have eight tradeable first if they want to go out and do a deal they still have that 48 contract um which is around 8 million
It’s got a team option for next year um so I like what New York did the you know the shakum trade it’s changed the goalpost in Indiana so Indiana goes from this like this retooling post sabonis how Burton is Feelgood story and now all
Of a sudden you go out and get a second second to be probably Max guy to with halberton um they haveen they’ve lost um I think three in a row since um halton’s only played one of those games but you lost to Portland Denver the Denver game
On Tuesday night was a good game and it now it changes like that okay now we’re not that you know under the cap Team all our draft picks now there’s like an expectation here and I don’t know about and they’ll figure it out this year but certainly move moving forward when you
Have two players making you know you know 80 million plus um plus dollars and I think it’ll be interesting as far as what they go out and do if there’s something with Buddy hee who didn’t play much um Tuesday night they’ve been kind of rolling out Ben Shepard their rookie
A little bit more here um and so that’s that’s um that’s interesting but of course I mean like the biggest thing was Adrian Griffin right like that’s like and you I mean you know being in Boston and having Joe last year as a rookie coach like the expect and i’ lived it
With and Jason kid in 2013 14 you know post you know we get kg and and Paul and we’re loaded and everyone’s like oh you know we Eastern Conference are bust and we’ve you know you’ve given up and then like and then you look at the standings
And you’re like 14 and 19 you’re like oh my God like we’re in like a free-for-all and it wasn’t the case in Milwaukee where they were 30 and 13 at the time he got let go I think it was the third um third winning highest winning percentage
Of a coach fired um behind David blot in Cleveland and I Billy I got a stat in from our stats guy Billy McKenna and with the Lakers in 7980 which is but when you have Giannis on your roster and you had fire your defensive identity has changed and a lot
Of it is because you swap out Drew you know you take Drew out and you put Lillard in and you take a step back and the um if you looked at the standings you’d be like they’re crazy but I think the eye test because there’s been some
Games even Saturday when I gave up 100 138 to Detroit um there have been some games here but now it’s like you know you’re all in man like you know if it’s going to be Doc or somebody probably doc I guess like there’s like it’s Championship or bus like you got to get
To it at a minimum an Eastern Conference Finals NBA Finals because you have gone all in and there’s really not much more out you can do with with that roster it’s kind of wild we were up there and that was probably Milwaukee’s most dominating game of the season like
Celtics on that second night and it’s still felt weird like Adrian I just listening to Adrien answer questions before that game you could just tell there was this I don’t know there was something going on in terms of of of the team hadn’t quite met full expectations
To that point despite the glossi record there was obvious concern about the defense so much was you know especially on that night with Drew being back up there was being made about that uh I will not say I thought that there that a coaching change was coming but um you
Know you’ve been in those front offices how how much when you feel that pressure like are those do those conversations come up like man we might have to think about something like this and and how do you navigate that yeah I mean I’ve been
Part of it I mean we we uh we go to two NBA finals in um 02 and’ 03 we’re 500 we’re actually playing the Celtics on a Sunday afternoon I remember that game it was like 2004 I can’t remember my my wife’s birthday but I can remember
Playing Boston and firing Byron Scott um and we’re 500 and you just like you’ve you’ve hit like the Li where you hit the point where you’re like I don’t know if things are going to get much better can we make an inseason change where we still have 40 games to salvage the
Season it was I don’t want to say easier for us because we went from Byron to Lawrence Frank who was an assistant already and had a relationship with that group and I think Lawrence ran off like we went off like 14 or 15 in a row this
Is a little bit different because now you’re likely going to hire from the outside as far as a you know like a guy like Doc if it’s Doc Rivers who you know was in Philly last year year certainly has an idea of of the league but wasn’t
On the bench right like the the um the relationships with the other players aren’t there as far as if you had you know Joe prty who’s their inim right now and it’s it’s hard I mean there was so many times during that 13 14 season I
Thought Jason was going to get let go um just because there there’s you know you’re hey you get to a point we can’t change the roster so how do we get a boost here how do we get a how do we get something different here as far as a
Different voice here and it’s usually it’s usually coach I mean it’s the coach who’s the who’s going to be the guy to to do it and You’ rather I guess you’d rather find out in late January than you get to a a first round or a second round
Series you get bounced and then you’re like oh my then we’re gonna have to go through this whole process again y can doc fix it though like I mean I I as much as we as the coach is the obvious Fall Guy in these situations like unless Doc’s not going out there
And playing defense right like how is uh how can he Salvage what they I mean they have so much talent Salvage is a terrible word for this but like can he can he make a difference in terms of what ails them well you know one of the
Big things that stood out and you just talk with people as far as the how many um points they’ve given up in in Fast Break points and a lot of it’s just getting back on defense right it’s like transition defense so is it just a different voice um from from that
Perspective but you know Lillard is still going to be out there Malik Beasley is still going to be out there um Middleton’s played pretty well from giannis’s honest maybe they use Brooke a little bit differently here your bench is your bench you mean they’re going to
Get they’re going to get Crowder back um eventually here from that injury so that could help um but can he fix it it’s going to be um certainly challenging especially with um Doc’s track record right yeah excuse me you know the you know that’s gonna hang over his head
Right can he get a team out of the second round you know certainly he did good things in Boston but you know what happened in with the Clippers and what happened with Philadelphia and you’re up 3 to2 here and that that that will be talked about here and there’s no getting
Away from that yeah it’s it’s gonna be fascinating and it is funny when people bring up that invoke the the whole Doc’s troubles because you know he got to the finish line here but man ever since then it’s it’s been a wild Journey uh quite a
Challenge and the way I also frame this is when people ask me about this is Celtics went through this last year where you know they the coaching change that was at the start of the year and I don’t know if Joe ever felt fully comfortable it’s it’s weird because you don’t get
You know it’s probably not going to get to bring his own staff you know he’s going to have to deal with what’s there and Joe prty he’s a legend man because every time a team needs a coach to step in he just he’s there but you know the
Challenge for Doc is going to be like Midstream is tough and uh eager to see how he how he responds this certainly adds a layer of intrigue I will say the the move in Miami was the one that most sent my antenna up yesterday if there was one player I really didn’t want
Miami to get even as all the signals there it was Terry Roser and one because like Terry was so was such a joy he was on our programming up here and and uh I loved his personality I loved the way he took over in those 2018 playoffs when
Kyrie and Gordon were injured I mean I went so far as to say I think it’s probably a better move because they didn’t give up as much as they would have given up for Lillard and you know Terry can be a two-way guy fits their culture is excited to be there and all
That like is was it the perfect move for them like if if if if sure they would have given up whatever they had to get you know despite the tug-of war this off season but um could this be the move that really thrust them back into this
In this conversation well I mean if you if you watch them the last week they have not played good basketball they probably should have lost in Brooklyn um they get their doors blown off in Toronto against a depleted Raptor team that’s post sakam um they
Lose on the Murray 3 at the dejon Murray 3 against Atlanta and then you get blown out by um Orlando right it’s not been a good uh Kyle L’s coming off the bench now um you know he’s on a big trade contract and I think if you’re Miami
You’re looking up at the standings and all of a sudden you’re you’re the fourth seed and now you’re like a playing right you’re like all of a sudden Here Comes Brooklyn and here comes Cleveland who’s played terrific um I think it’s the right move because you as you said like
You gave up a um you gave up future one which is in 2012 potentially 2027 or two 2028 and you didn’t have to touch any of your other have to touch Caleb Martin or hero or yakz or some of your other players outside of bam and and uh and
Jimmy here and I think he’ll give him a boost um you know can he get him into the top four I don’t know but you know as you know like you get Miami into the playoffs it’s all it’s fair game right like anything can happen if you’re playing Boston Philly Milwaukee or any
Of these teams if they’re um if if they’re healthy here and I like the move um I like the move for Miami because it gets him another it gives him a guard that can score and can defend um the hero combination will be interesting the
Two of them together um out there and I like it for Charlotte I mean Charlotte’s at a point where it’s crazy they’re in the bottom of the standings here and they have no draft Equity from other teams they owe a pick to San Antonio that’s protected in the next two years
And eventually when you have new ownership like you have to like you know it’s like I heard Mitch cup Che said well I don’t think it’s a rebuild and I’m like well yeah it’s not a rebuild when you’re already eight wins you already got eight wins you know but but
There are pieces there but you know now it’s going to be like what happens with Miles Bridges and Gordon Hayward and and um what happens with PJ Washington guys like that um and it’s going to be um it’s going to be fascinating here but I
Like it for both teams I thought it was kind of both teams kind of going in a different direction it’s weird like every trade lately has been good for both sides like you know like this this doesn’t happen like uh it but hey maybe we’re maybe just the the uh the amount
Of you know knowledge we have now like both sides are are getting what they need and it’s some of these trades have been easy to sort of see coming and sort of like you sit there and say yeah that that makes sense from both sides it’s
Weird to see it play out uh so far the one team that hasn’t made a move well I guess they have because they traded James Harden but like I keep waiting for the the next shoe to drop in Philadelphia you know watching them what do you think do they need to make
Another move should they make another move will the all the this this this changes in the East make them motiv ated to make another deal but because I I feel like I still watching them and it’s weird to say when you watch what Maxi is
Doing and and be going for 70 Am I Wrong to think they maybe could still need one more piece to to to sort of get over that their own hump yeah I mean there’s part of you that watches them against Denver the other night um I think a week
Ago and they win a real real nice game and think okay they’re good right like hey just keep embiid healthy right you know let the role players Maxi’s played at a pretty high level here and then there’s other games where where you’re like thinking you know they do need
Another guy now the hard part is you’re you’re facing this Balancing Act here where you know they you know they’ve talked about cap flexibility and stuff like that and cap flexibility is it can kind of go two ways it’s for me sometimes it’s a little bit fool’s gold
Right like I think cap flexibility 10 years ago was like oh great we got cap space You know here are the list of free agents we’re going to go out and try to get Dwayne Wade or J or LeBron or Chris Bosch or and certainly you can use it
For trades but as you know Chris like guys don’t leave teams like fre agents don’t go out and switch teams I think like van v going to um Houston was different and um and Brunson going to New York but jayen wasn’t an wasn’t an aiser at that time um so if you’re
Waiting for Paul George to leave the Clippers or um Drew to leave Boston I think you’re gonna be waiting for a long time I mean that’s the reality but on the other end you want to keep that flexibility but you want to marginally improve at the deadline without giving
Up everything like I always go back to what Denver had done um in two separate trades they go out and get Aaron Gordon in 2021 and then they go get kcp um right before uh free agency started in 2022 cost them one first round pick
Total in that deal and a bunch of you know certainly role players there and I think if you’re Philly like they’ve got three ones to trade how do we keep some of them how do we keep two because once you get to to the draft then that bumps
Up get another two back you know they get their 24 and then 2031 but who’s the team out there that’s willing to make a deal with you can you get um I don’t think Alex Caruso can you know he’s on such a good contract um you know you’re not going to trade seconds
For him and when Chicago willing to go out and for a first round pick what happens in uh Portland Malcolm Brogden for example do you get another ball handler next to um Maxi but he’s got a he’s got $23 million next year um bogdanovic in Detroit like like the guys
That have and I said this on TV the guys that either have on expiring deals or have a team option SL partial are the perfect fits Bruce Brown in Toronto um bog donovic even a guy like miles bridges in Charlotte um who um is on an
Expiring the thing with him is you don’t inherit his bird rights um to to resign but you could do it with cap space so Philly’s in that they’re like in this weird spot because like if they don’t do a deal then and they don’t get out of
Like the second round then it’s be like Daryl M dropped the ball man he’s wasting jaw and be’s prime years like I can already I can already hear the headlines here WR the article so it’s you know so but they are definitely a team and he hey Daryl be outside of Sam
Prey in Oklahoma City Daryl’s been has traded the most made the most trades out of any active um active GMS right now which is like 82 it’s which pretty remarkable here so yeah I would circle circle them as a team to watch but it’s a matter of how much you willing to
Give up right like how much of your draft equity and flexibility next year are you willing to kind of sacrifice all right before all this crazy Miss started I was just gonna make this uh what should the Celtics do and it took who wants to talk about the Celtics man they’re
Rolling even on my trade meter I have at a four and like I could even put that that’s and a 10 is the highest I could even probably bump that to a two or three or yeah I was G to say like I I’m struggling I’m uh you know that’s why I
Need your your brain here to help me like what so first off do do you think Brad Stevens does he feel any more pressure I don’t sense Brad as a sort of like over reactionary type but certainly as you watch the rest of the East improve you maybe your motivation is is
Upped a little bit um as you’ve you know the reason I would suspect they’re low on your your trade meter is because they don’t have a ton of assets to go uh make a deal they have that Grant Williams $6.2 million trade exception they have some contracts at the end of their bench
That are tradeable but they’re all pretty much between 1.8 and2.2 million and unless you’re making what I call the NBA 2K trade where you’re trying to load up five guys and no one wants that they do have a bounty of picks um that’s like what people forget that’s what people
Forget about Boston they’re not like they’re not like some of these other teams they’re not like Milwaukee they’re not like Phoenix yes they pay rolls high but they still have um you know certainly you owe um Portland a pick down the I think 29 yeah um and so
They’re they’re still sitting on these the the draft Equity standpoint and they and what people also forget is that in acquiring christops porzingis they got a first which seems Preposterous at this point um so there there’s there’s options if they want to make a splash I guess how do you balance this having
Been in there right like okay so they’re on the second apron they’re on the hook for way more money than I thought they’d be on the hook for after adding Drew um do you just lean into it if you’re going to pay $40 million in in a penalty do
You just think about adding while it’s at least less prohibitive this year than maybe future Seasons or do you just say you know what we got a good six we’re hoping that pton Pritchard and cornette and Hower can be a seventh or an eighth and like how would you navigate this
Deadline if you’re Brad Stevens yeah I mean it’s basically that 6.2 million trade exception right um that’s kind of what you’re from a let’s just remove the draft equ out of there CU that would come into play if a player becomes available here but I think ownership has
Committed that they’re willing to spend right like they’ve always said like hey if we have a championship roster we can go out and do it because like they made the the trade last year where they saved money and then they went out and G muscala at the deadline where they added
Back money so it’s almost like just rotating the money around here um they’ve got an open roster spot as you said they are topheavy and like you’re not moving your top six right like you’re six guys are your core guys and then when you peel it back like I I
Found it funny and I try to stay off like the rumor mill like oh yeah like Boston would like Kelly oin I’m like yeah great we I’m sure they would like Kelly yeah like you’re trading like seven guys like it’s just that’s just the reality of because how you have to
Look at it is you can only besides the the um the exception you can only take back within 110% of money coming in that’s hard so if you’re trading out of like a you know a $10 million guy or for a $10 million guy you’re like trying to
Send out like nine and change like it’s the old days of getting within five or six million dollars is not there anymore so I think you’re looking at guys who fit into that 6.2 million like I wrote about and I don’t think New Orleans would do it like Naji Marshall would be
Great right kind of a big Wing here but he plays for them and you know can you give you know throw out a bunch of I don’t think you know you would trade a one because he’s on an expiring deal um John Contra and mempis like guys like
That are who’s on a controllable contract um that those are kind of your like your wing guys that you’re you know you’re going out and trying to do because Payton’s uh you know signed this rookie extension here we always say he’s got a poison pill restriction right so
But Payton’s on a good contract and when you’re high with salaries you need those S million doll players or $8 million players just to balance out um balance out the rest of your Rost here so listen they’ll be they will be active like all
30 teams and as far as what you can um what you can fit into that $6.2 million they’ll be active in the buyout Market but with you know certainly with the restrictions as far as they can only sign Players whose salary was below $ 122.4 million from his their pre so like
If Gordon became available Hayward he’s out of the mix Kyle Larry became available he’s out of the mix um you know if there’s a someone out if Alex Burks became available um you know potentially you know like that like down the you know down the road looking at um
You know from a salary standpoint here um so yeah you’re you’re you’re limited here as far as what you can do but listen at the end of the game at the end of the day it comes down to like Tatum and brown making shots yeah right like honestly like I I keep telling
People when they say like what do the Celtics need I said can you promise me christops porzingis is healthy in the playoffs you know that Jaylen and Jason are are ready for that moment that this team is executing down the stretch like that matters way more than whatever they
Do here and yet you know naturally you’re just left I think one of the feelings that people up here came away with after 22 was man they were one player short against the Warriors like you needed that one other Defender that you could have thrown to help Chase
Steph or or Klay Thompson or whatever the case may be and so I think there’s a fear that you don’t want to feel that way again and yet no matter what the name is like it’s just hard when you’re talking about those 6.2 and under guys it’s either it’s not easy on rookie
Deals who run counter to what you’re trying to do it’s like it’s it’s hard like I I I don’t know there’s just here’s the other thing too Chris is like people forget there’s only 437 players in the NBA yeah we’re not lit this is we don’t have NFL rosters here
We don’t have 15 we don’t have a pool of, 1500 to to pull from here and then you basically eliminate like you know all right you look at playoff teams all right I’m gonna eliminate their top eight right so and and how the league is set right now there’s there’s a a
Handful of teams out there that are buried in the bottom when you look at Detroit and you look at Charlotte and you look at um you know who else in the uh you know San Antonio like you know like can you go out and um you know try
To get SE Osman or if he’s bought out or Doug mcder if they’re bought out right like you can just add without um without giving up and that’s that’s the hard part in what I’m when I’m doing these trade guides and they’re like oh one trade you’d like to see for each team
I’m like oh my God like I don’t want to be like to throw stuff out there like you know like you would appreciate this from our ESPN days um our good friend Adam Risinger we’re doing like you know the one trade we’d like to see article and I was
Working on it last night and usually it’s like you know like Zack LaVine to the Lakers and all that stuff and I and I and I and it I did it I did in Oklahoma City one was like Andre Drummond to the to the Thunder for three seconds it wasn’t sexy enough there’s
The GM thinking there and that’s like that’s how you have to think like why is a playoff team gonna trade a a five million dollar player to the Celtics that is part of their Ro rotation here um but listen I think Boston’s in a really good spot I really do I mean but
It comes down to got you know Brown and Tatum porzingis staying healthy um you know um holiday you know CER it comes down to health and just executing you know down the down the stretch yeah well they done a great job they’ve like every it feels like every other game they’re
Resting somebody with hopes of just making sure they’re all upright when you have that much talent you can kind of get away with it and so uh credit to them for seeing the longer Vision it’s not easy going up against Dallas and not having christops porzingis out there but
I think they see the long-term Vision here the the the right trade the trade that I would like to see if ESPN calls me to to write a uh uh bring me back for one article is going to be uh Robert Williams to OKC I know it doesn’t help
This year oh yeah for long term for the long term I thought you were GNA say that Robert Williams to Boston I’m like wait a we well no actually yeah so I I can’t get I can’t get to the number right now I can’t in the offseason when
When I have I already have a trade in mind I’m not gonna I don’t want to slander anybody right now I if Rob is not moved before the offseason I will find a way to trade him back to Boston 100% yeah I mean if you’re to thunder
And you’re sitting on 14 tradeable first and 21 seconds I would take a flyer on him and I know like there’s the injury part and where he is healthwise here but you know I think Oklahoma City where you know they’re 29th in defensive rebounding percentage and they’re 29th
In Second Chance points allowed which is a lot and you’ve got you know holgren and you know and and a bunch of you know the other Jaylen Williams and um Kenrick Williams a bunch of undersized players here and I know I know Robert doesn’t help now but I think he you know
Certainly would you know after this year two more years left um you know on his contract and and all I think about is how good OKC’s rehab like they made they dipped Al Horford in some sort of Fountain of Youth and then sent him before sending him back to Boston so I
Feel like that would be the one spot where Rob and you know he he’s got a place down in Texas now like close to home I’m I’m just looking out for the the best the best interest of my of my guy if I can’t have him here I want him
To because they’re gonna be competing for titles very very quickly and uh I’m it’s it’s a it’s a it’s a remark Oklahoma City I didn’t even realize that I think they their PR people tweeted last night like they’re number they’re sitting at number one today on a on a
Wednesday at the end of uh at the end of of January number one in the Western Conference and um it’s it’s a remarkable situation because like they’re a little bit different than some of these other teams that tried to stay in the middle and then build it up like IND Indiana
Stayed in the middle when and and tried to add here um where they kind of hit you know the bottom right like they you know and they just kind of you know focused on Shay and they and they get him and then you know Giddy and homr gets healthy and Jaylen Williams Santa
CL jayen Williams has been tremendous he’s been like high level here um they’ve just kind of found rotational players and now they’re um it’s funny you’re going to have two teams in Oklahoma City and um in Minnesota who um you know Minnesota’s been through the playoffs before but not
Has not Advanced right like this is going to be new this is New Territory for um these type it’s different than the East where Boston and Milwaukee and Philadelphia and Miami have been there before right they’re battle tested playoff teams here where some of these Western Conference teams
Haven’t what one last thing I want you is there is there any way in your mind Brad doing the Derek white trade a couple years ago like sneaky big like Brad doesn’t typically do the dipy toe in and just like I know mcalla was probably the unsexiest move he’s made
Yeah is there any Pathway to them like doing something is it just the Cobble together contracts do you think about like would you put Al in a deal if you like I I can’t I haven’t gotten to that point where can think of anything do you think there any chance brag gets frisky
Here I just think it’s so hard do when you’re when you’re sitting in the top of the standings and you wanting moving and it’s really not really basketball related it’s like the mentality of your locker room for sure that you just traded I’m Al Horford for maybe you
Think a guy can help right and I look back when Indiana I think Indiana and um Philly was a long time ago they made that Danny remember that Danny Granger um yeah um trade with um Evan Turner Danny Granger Evan Turner and like Indiana went in the tank after that like
And it wasn’t really like what like the trade it was just like you remove a a core piece in a foundation of your locker room where for maybe what you think could be an upgrade and it takes you know you take like two steps back here um and you’re continually searching
For that here and it’s that’s the that’s what you have the balance it’s same with like Indiana like you know buddy heeld is a you know like buddy heeld can help them but can you turn them into a first round pick and but that doesn’t help you
Now like so I think yeah I think it’s a I think it’s a little bit I think it’s a challenge um as far as moving you know you finding another doing another Derek white type deal out there um for a guy that um can help and I think the the
Likelihood is that you maybe find a guy that’s waved you know um you know in in the in the bio mark Market it’s uh I think back to the Kendrick Perkins trade for the Celtics where you know like it made all the sense in the world perk was going to be
A free agent they had to make a decision there but oh my God that that crippled that team like kg was despondent in that locker room I never forget where we we were in den and like they never quite recovered from that and you can’t tell
Me that it didn’t play a part so yeah I like I don’t think that’s going to be what they do I just you know you have to think creatively when you’re in think big and uh I always wonder those are the tough decisions that the all front office people
Have to make uh Bobby uh I hope you get you some rest get that running now before like more podcasts start calling you man I don’t I mean what else could happen on a Wednesday right I mean goodness gra I don’t know but I appreciate as always uh you can email me
Anytime you want it doesn’t you don’t know like you don’t have a a you know a crystal ball saying today is the day that this is gonna happen so you email and I’m happy to happy to come on to peel to peel back the curtain there are
So many times people are like man you’re so smart about the cap and what I actually just do is I email Bobby and I say uh I’m sorry to ask you this like stupid question for the 400th time and kind I appreciate people utilizing like I’m read like Dave McManaman wrote an
Article on the Lakers last night and he was talking like bird RS in the heart and I I sent him a text and I’m like I feel like a proud papa you know like you you because we have to we have to and I
Know the B what goes on to court is the most important thing like it really is but there’s this new CBA Chris there’s such a business element to it and I said this and before we I go I said this on U with when I was talking with mik Andrews
The other day in the past the easy thing would be for Brad Stevens to go to ownership and say we have a trade on the table and it’s going to cost us $10 million extra towards the luxury tax now it’s like okay we have a trade it’s
Going to cost 1010 million all right now how does it impact the apron how does it impact roster building here like like same with you know with Miami just went through here where we have we’re in this little bit of a honeymoon period because the rules don’t start the harsh rules do
Not start until the offseason here and you know um it’s been like I I tease it’s like you know the buffet line right Buffet the buffet lines closes at midnight yeah I get there at 11 like I’m gonna go get Drew holiday I’m gonna get James Harden I’m gonna get Damen Lillard
Here before all these rules come in place and the there’s going to be so much more restrictions and that’s why Boston’s a good spot because you know with where um with the 2js and then you’ve got porzingis on a below Max contract and eventually what will happen
Is you’ve got to figure out with Derek white right like next year like he’ll be extension eligible he’ll be on expiring you know is he a ro I don’t think so a roster casual to be because how you you know how your where your finances are
Here but it just it makes you just you know it instead of just doing a step one now you got to do step two three four and five as far as how um how these this new CBA affects um how you build a team well I I’ll I’ll I’ll plant this SE now
Be prepared for the we’re going to need you whenever Drew signs whatever extension he’ll probably sign March or a March or April I think he’s eligible somewhere around there and and I suspect you got to move quick on that right because like you’re just they must know
They they you know teams can’t talk or we’re not supposed to talk but seum agreement yeah exactly right you know you don’t trade for someone without at least some indication that you’re going to have a long-term future with but winning helps winning helps true exactly but like then the Derek
Thing like I I keep trying to figure out the Derek number and every time he uh has another big game I sit there and think man Wick gck I hope you’re ready to uh I hope you’re ready to write some well he whatever percentage his agents
Get they should give like a 0.002 to JJ reck who’s been the biggest Derek and rightfully so like listen like I mean if if you haven’t watched Derek white in San Antonio like back in the day like you know guy led the league in charges was like you know like like this isn’t
New I mean it’s new because he’s in a the spotlight is on like they’re in a different element here where um they’re on a on a terrific team here and he’s um yeah who knows you get three four All Stars maybe potentially we’ll see you know we’ll see at least two that’s a
Good that’s why you’re the best Bobby just setting me up for a tease next segment I’ll go ahead and dive into that Bobby marks thank you as always thanks Chris appreciate it look no further than the award-winning 24 Auto Group with over 2600 vehicles in stock the brands you
Love backed by the savings and service you can count on visit today or shop online at 24 autogroup.com Good stuff from Bobby I I was really tempted I told him 20 minutes uh that I needed him for we went like almost 40 and uh I still had like 100 questions on the extensions coming up for Drew and then having to navigate it with Derek so
I’m going to let him rest let him get through this crazy part of the NBA schedule and uh maybe we’ll revisit that as we get into to March and when when Drew is finally eligible to to Ink that extension and like I said Derek is going to be a fascinating conversation I think
Both guys will be here deep into the future but uh certainly it’s going to cost the Celtics you know we talked a lot in that segment about uh the craziness in the Eastern Conference and you know with with Miami upgrading and uh Indiana upgrading with the addition
Of sakam and New York surging now with ogan noi uh it feels like the playoffs are going to get a lot more daunting it made me think like you know are the Celtics still just a kind of a prohibitive favorite at top the the league based on how good they’ve been
Our friends over at fanatic Sportsbook crunch the numbers here’s the odds at the top to win the Eastern Conference we got Celtics at plus 130 bucks at plus 190 76ers at Plus plus 550 and the heat down at plus 1300 so kind of surprising to me like one there there’s a little
Bit of a new volatility factor with with the Bucks and yet I think because if they do add a championship level coach like Doc Rivers you’ll see those odds improve and it’s sort of them and the Celtics at the top there and the drop off’s a little bit bigger than I
Expected I mean Joel and be just went for 70 points and the Sixers could still make another move and maybe they’re waiting to see exactly what the Sixers do at the deadline to see if they’ sort of join that tier one of uh Eastern Conference favorites the heat plus 1300
Is just the most heat thing ever we know they’re going to be there in the mix whether that’s the Eastern Conference semi-finals the Eastern Conference Finals perpetually against the Boston Celtics they’re uh they’re the ones that that kind of worry me I think Terry Rosier is a perfect fit for that team I
Think he’s really going to just inject a little bit of what they need offensively we know how good they can be defensively they have one of the best coaches in the NBA and have locked him up long term uh I will perpetually worry about the Miami
Heat and uh I’ll keep saying it I thought I thought them getting larded like that would have scared me but um you know I still would have thought they were could would have some holes defensively which is kind of how I feel about the Bucks uh adding Terry we know
How good he can be on that playoff stage just rewind to 2018 uh I think this adds a whole new level to what they’re capable of and I’m I’m going to keep an eye on that that heat number because I think once we get
See it and maybe we’ll get to see it on Thursday night if Terry’s out there we’ll see how good they can be uh it’s uh it could get real interesting in the East real quick the playoffs for sure are going to be a battle even though you
Think you feel pretty good about where the Celtics are fanatic sports book where you can earn 5% fan cash on your bets all right uh let’s turn the page the uh one of the one of the players uh who we haven’t seen a whole lot of this
Year in Boston has been JD Davidson drafted last year second round pick uh has really toiled up in Maine kind of developing his game it’s easy to forget when they drafted him 19 years old only 21 now and still kind of growing as a player but I’m pretty bullish on what he
Can be he plays at a speed that not a lot of players play at has some great athleticism if he can get that shot going I think uh there’s a real opportunity for him to eventually crack this rotation and uh the Celtics need another point guard eventually especially a lowcost point guard
Down the road to maybe just save the wear and tear on guys like Drew and um they’ve got the luxury now of of Payton and Derek right now but you know they could need at some point along the way a fourth option like JD and especially further down the road in future Seasons
So in advance of Main’s game tonight on our air on NBC Sports Boston got a chance to catch up with JD this morning here’s our chat all right here with JD Davidson jie just let’s just start general like how’s the experience been in Maine this season and and uh what do
You think the uh the greatest opportunity for growth has been up there um just taking this day by day step by step um not looking too far ahead not looking back at all um just enjoying the process of you know my journey right now 21 years old enjoying the journey The
Next Step just enjoying like leading the team being that being that point guard coach on the court and just trying to make my teammates better every day what has that evolution been like you come into the league obviously you know drafted late second round but you’re the
Celtics are loaded at that point guard position you get sent up to main like where do you think you’ve been able to to develop most in that in that point guard mentality um um I say just bringing the energy from the jump like on the defensive end they’ve been talking to me
A lot about pressuring the ball guarding the ball um not getting screened a lot so it’s just come here trying to bring that energy from the jump for the team and trying to be that smart you uh you play at a pace that uh not a lot of
Players play at like what is that like trying to harness that and and turn that into a weapon with your speed and the way that you play on the court uh just know got a lot of shoes around me at all times so it’s it’s not easy to help or
So trying to use my speed and my strength as the advantage against against guard that’s guarding me or whatever um trying to just trying to be me that’s all being me what is it like what what did Joe and Brad tell you before you go up to Maine for these STS
Like what what do they want you working on where do they want to see you develop as a as a point guard um coming in from last season into this summer they wanted me to uh work on defense um just stay staying active uh scoring in the pick
And rooll I me just shooting the ball when never it’s time shooting with confidence tell me about that because that’s a process right like even even even I think back to some of the guys that have come into the league and Avery Bradley when he first got there had to
Go up to main learn and get that confidence and and with shooting the basketball what has that process been like and and how you are you gaining confidence with that shot yeah the confidence is there just just trusting the work you put in every day you know
Sh sh a lot of shots just taking into the game uh just yeah I always say just trust in my work the work I put in this summer now just trusting it and every time I shoot I think it’s going in well I the numbers reflect it and uh seeing
You put up putting up some big numbers up there uh both on the assist and the points you know I know you uh the voting closed last night for that next for that up next game um what would it mean if you uh if you to to to at least be
Considered for that game and and get a chance to show off on the All-Star stage oh mean something for me um uh I guess I see the the work that I’ve been put in coming to reality and um just going on the Allstar Weekend and taking that
Moment is like a surreal moment I never been Allstar Weekend so it’ll be different for me nice tell me about uh you got to come back up with the parent club like what’s it like bouncing between and how much you keeping an eye on what they’re doing every day how much
Are you just locked in on what you’re doing up there what’s the balance like uh you know once you get out of practice you got a a little time time off your hand so I try to watch the game as much as I can but um basically just focusing
Where I’m at um if I’m up or down so just taking it day by day you know know anytime it could be a call up or you it could be a call down back to me so just just staying ready ready for that moment and just you know the big Club is the
Big Club you always want to be there and that’s my goal to get there the the from from when we you know what we’ve seen obviously winning helps but like you get to be in that locker room it feels like there’s some good vibes in there in
Terms of like what this team is doing what’s it like to be a part of that mix on those on those days you are with the parent club man it’s it’s different just just knowing them guys and going just to you know when you go there they always
Checking on you when you up there so it’s always just like the most my big brothers I would say uh just been in locker room with him is it’s still surreal to me like um I don’t think it got to me yet just being Lo room like J
Tatum Jayden Brown It’s kind of different to me what what is it like who’s who’s who’s taking you under their wing who’s the most checking on you who’s who are the guys that are are making sure you’re on that right path uh I say um JB and and Drew as of now um
Those the guys I talked to and like I watched the most just like during the game so those the two guys what’s that like with you know Drew is obviously accomplished so much in his his career and having won a championship what’s it like getting a little advice from him
Now part of the organization um man this I’ve been watching Drew since um I don’t know New Orleans days so it’s kind of different for me so um just taking advice from him because you know he been on the championship team got a ring um
He been leaders of a lot of teams and like you know he the quarterback of the defense now so it’s just watching him is like oh my God it’s so different tell me about that you know you mentioned staying ready and not knowing you know sometimes you’re going to be up there
Sometimes you’re getting called up we’ve seen guys like nimish get thrown into a role when injuries and stuff like that how do you mentally stay ready for that like that you know having forbid if Drew or Payton or someone was to go down you
Know how how ready are you to to jump on to that to that to that spot uh I’m ready I’m ready I think I’ve been showing it during the g g League games where I’ve been trying to trying to play defense as hard as I trying to be the uh
The hardest player playing on the court at all times so I think I’m ready I love it I love that that confidence tell me about uh Jordan Walsh the rookie up there what is what it stood out about getting to play alongside him when he’s been there um his confidence man his
Confidence is high he always he always talking about it he always he never turning down too many shots um and he just he just being hisself I always tell him be be yourself and it gonna take you a long way so he just being him and it
Gonna take him a long way you guys are in action right after our show tonight going up against I believe Wendy City what uh tell me about this the coaching staff and and getting to know this new group uh what have they been able to
Impart on you up there in Maine um just go St been you know everybody kind of in the early years of coaching we in our early years of playing so it’s kind we gonna make mistakes we always tell each other we gonna make mistakes so they
Always just tell me move on to the next play and just just be you and lead the lead the group uh I’m my most important question what was it like to wear those L Bean uniforms from afar the uh the flannel uh jerseys that you guys were
Rocking did you get to uh did you get check those I mean like ons yeah yeah I think the guys I think we like them as like as a collector I think we like to W them I I like that I like that the G League gets to experiment a little bit
You guys have had some some crazy some crazy jerseys up there it’s different uh what is it like uh I don’t know how much time you you like do you do what the natural split is whether you get back to Boston like what’s it like being up there in Maine have you enjoyed
The uh the have you gotten to explore it all beyond the basketball uh not not too much uh we as a team we go out to eat a little bit try different places um but we go bowling a little bit not too much though but uh we just try to
Give each other space you know we always seeing each other every day so uh I just by sometimes H how is JD Davidson’s bowling game uh I think I’m number one on the team right now what are we rolling I just won the other day too not too long ago what were
Your score what was the high score uh 157 okay that’s solid solid I mean you know like like I said we’re gonna have to we’re gonna see it give me the give me the best restaurant in Maine that you guys have been to what’s the go-to um the best one to me is
Probably uh um probably probably longone horns for me oh okay nothing wrong with that you know what you’re getting I like that choice um I get the 8 O um dang I forgot what they call yeah yeah no I know what you’re talking about like it’s the goto
Yeah there we go all right all right JD you got more important things to focus on than than than dinner so good luck tonight we’ll see you back down here in Boston soon all right thank you all right good stuff from we I will say uh
One I want to challenge J to a a bowling match uh I do not have a lot of athletic talents as anyone who’s seen my golf game can attest uh but I somewhere in this basement I have some bowling trophies from childhood whether it’s candle pin or big
Ball uh I am ready to challenge anyone uh if there are any Celtics Talk podcast listeners who would like to uh to take me on on the bowling alley I am all for that I will bring my clown shoes and uh be ready to take on that challenge 150
Something whatever he said that’s not bad not awful you know I’m not saying but probably probably going to be up near the 170 190s to uh to to to to hang in a in a real competitive game uh luckily uh we’re I will not play JD Davidson at basketball because he is
Much much much much much much better at that and uh hopefully we get to see more reps of him here in Boston as the seasons go along Celtic back at it like I said Thursday night could be a big Showdown Terry Rosier maybe in uniform

I mean this respectfully… I think Forsberg should take those glasses, and he should burn them
Dear lady from the 24 auto group ad: you have a microphone, no need to scream
For chrissakes get a real haircut already Forsberg
Well, we all know Milwaukee is a non-threat now, but scary Terry in Miami worries me!
Doc is an upgrade in my opinion for Milwaukee. I wish Boston would’ve fired Muzzula last year. I don’t believe in him as the coach. We will not win he title with him!
Trade Al??? How dare you put such sacrilege into the universe Chris Forsberg 😂😂😂
Go get Andre Drummond
