Utah could get BOTH an MLB & NHL expansion team?

Utah could get BOTH an MLB & NHL expansion team?

Well the state of Utah and Salt Lake City only have one pro sports team right now that is the Utah Jazz playing at the old Delta Center but that might change within the next decade the state of Utah possibly making moves for an MLB expansion franchise as well as an NHL

Expansion franchise also they’re the Front Runners to host the 2034 Winter Olympics a lot could be happening in the state of Utah and a lot could be happening in Salt Lake City this article says the effort to bring an NHL Franchise to Utah just took a huge step forward the Utah

Jaz owner Ryan Smith makes a formal request for NHL league expansion so he’s requesting an expansion team in Utah the article talks about the fact that Utah has already put their name in the ring Salt Lake City has for a potential MLB expansion team although technically that

Proposal the MLB stadium would not be in Salt Lake City it would be in between the airport and Salt Lake City with a great view of all the mountains of Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith’s Entertainment Group announced that it has formally requested the NHL to initiate an expansion process with the ultimate

Purpose of bringing an NHL Franchise to Utah and later in this article they talk about the arena situation the current Delta Center now the Delta Center did receive a renovation in 2016 however it is one of the bottom tier NBA arenas in the thought processes if Utah gets an

NHL team I would expect that to be an incentive to build a new Arena that would be a dual sport NHL NBA arena it would host both the Jazz and also the NHL team because you know it also have the same owner it just makes the most

Sense I already have pondered the idea of the Jazz possibly getting a new Arena even after they got a renovation to their old one and 2016 and it’s kind of interesting right now Utah they only have the Delta Center I mean sure you’ve got you know the

University of Utah you’ve got some other teams in state with with colleges but in terms of professional sports there’s no NFL team there’s no MLB team and there’s no NHL team it is just the Delta Center which is again an old arena they could really step up their game and could you

Imagine we’ve seen you know I was looking up some stuff Salt Lake City is a major favorite to host the 2034 Winter Olympics now that is a ways away Salt Lake City got the 2002 Winter Olympics but apparently they want to go back there and right now they’re a heavy

Favorite so you could be looking at a brand new Salt Lake City that turns into kind of like a Sports Hub if they go forward and possibly get either an NHL expansion team or an MLB expansion team imagine they get both of them and they build a brand new Arena they would have

To build a brand new MLB stadium when it comes to their odds of getting an MLB expansion team I do think they have increased recently slightly it seems like the sediment around MLB expansion is is very likely Nashville in terms of the eastern half of the United States

And then the Western half possibly Salt Lake City being the leader although I would expect a major city in Texas possibly San Antonio or Austin to really throw their name in the ring when it comes to that we’re in the very early process of potential NH or MLB expansion but it is interesting

That Salt Lake City and the owner of the JS has come forward and initiated or is trying to initiate the expansion process he says in the article after seeing the Las Vegas golden knights and the success that they’ve had and just how good they’ve been with the crowds as well

Considering it is crazy how with the tourism there that’s got to be some optimism for the NBA possibly to also go to Las Vegas considering the NBA and the NHL have very similar schedules in terms of how long their season is the amount of home games they have every year the

Playoffs everything like that and that’s just another reason why seems like Ryan Smith the owner of the Jazz wants an expansion team in Salt Lake City Utah do they have the population for it I think they certainly do for an NHL team I mean look at some of the Cities up in Canada

That have NHL professional sports franchises certainly they would have enough and then also I think Salt Lake City and the surrounding area would also work for an MLB team you could say well there’s better places in terms of TV market and I would agree with you even

On the west coast there are better places with more population if that’s all MLB cared about but I don’t think that’s really it I’m guessing MLB like if I’m MLB I I would be very interested in having a team in Salt Lake City and making sure it’s an open Stadium because

We’ve seen such a big emphasis on domes on retractable roofs it just be a great view of the mountain I do wonder what the altitude is like I don’t know for a fact but I would imagine the altitude is a lot less of an well it’s probably still a little bit of

An issue but less of an issue than in Colorado because the altitude is a major problem in terms of having an you know sports franchise especially MLB franchise that’s why Mexico City is basically ruled out for MLB expansion but either way when it comes to Utah we could be talking about them getting

Possibly a new Arena this is what I would say I would say and this is what’s being you know questioned in the article the idea would be to get an NHL expansion team they would play at the Delta Center for a few years as the new

Arena is being built and then both the Jazz and the expansion NHL team in Utah would move into the brand new arena in downtown Salt Lake City and then you would also have possibly an MLB stadium although you do have to wonder is it one or the other maybe Salt Lake City gets

An NHL team that might disqualify them or put them out of the running for for an MLB team because it’s not like the city has a crazy high population would that be a problem like almost too many mouths to feed or I mean maybe it wouldn’t be an issue considering the NHL

And the MLB normally you know happen at different times mainly outside of the playoffs and things like that uh but either way this is something to watch Utah it seems like they’re making moves to at least get one more professional sports franchise and if that happens I

Would expect even if it is just the Jazz like let’s say the expansion NHL team doesn’t happen the original thought was that Arizona was actually going to relocate and that came out that they were going to relocate and apparently now they’re not going to relocate and

They’re trying to fund a new Arena the coyotes are you know they’re playing at that terrible 5,000 seat capacity you know mini Arena right now mullet Arena and they’re trying to put together a renderings and a funding package for a new arena there so if the NHL does

Decide to expand you know I’ve heard Kansas City City I’ve heard Salt Lake City I’ve also heard qubec City so those are some interesting places to watch but definitely it is it does seem like the state of Utah and and Salt Lake City in specific is setting up to at least get

One more professional sports team and possibly a new Arena to go along with it it would make sense especially if you do get a brand new NHL team and you’re already dealing with an older Arena where you’d have to replace it for the Jazz just to go ahead and possibly by

2030 I mean you don’t really you know when it comes to timelines on Arenas if the Delta Center you know got the major renovation in 2016 you would say it’ probably at least last 13 or 14 years but it already is pretty old so you could move out of there theoretically by

2027 or 2028 even though it’s kind of frowned upon when you get a major renovation you want to stay there for at least 10 to 15 years it is a little bit different with Arenas than it is stadiums but either way we will see what happens and then when it comes to

Possibly hosting the Winter Olympics it’s it’s a great spot it is a great spot there was also another article about Park City Utah possibly hosting events for the Winter Olympics in 2034 they also talked about maybe as early as 2030 but it seems more likely that Salt

Lake City would get the 2034 Winter Olympics and they for the Winter Olympics they’re completely different than the Summer Olympics Summer Olympics at this point you need a major city if you do not have a major city for the summer of Olympics you’re going to be building a bunch of temporary stadiums I

Mean look at the FIFA World Cup it it’s just a complete mess in Qatar and it’s kind of the same thing with the Olympics so with Summer Olympics like smaller cities like Salt Lake City they’re off the table you would have to build up too much infrastructure that would be

Completely uh underutilized after the Olympics left you know the Olympics only being a you know a few month event it just doesn’t make much sense that’s why all these Summer Olympic Games are in mega cities now they’re not going to a smaller City but the Winter Olympics are

A little bit smaller you can have them at a place like salt Lake City and it is a very nice environment during the winter uh but either way guys that’s just an update on Utah the situation surrounding it that’s going to do it for this video make sure you’re following me

Discussing Salt Lake City potential expansion

  1. Delta center is one of the best nba arenas. It’s super modern ,has many suits, wide concourses and the bleachers are very intimate and steep

  2. The Angels AAA team just built a new stadium. What are you talking about no professional sports besides the Jazz?? The Bees have been there a long time. Surprised you overlooked this.

  3. Is alcohol permitted in Salt Lake City? Only half joking. Restrictive judgmental culture limits entertainment opportunities.

  4. I don’t think that SLC can pay for 2 expansion teams at once
The Yotes are probably to Houston so they’ll have to pay $1B for an expansion team, and the Ryan Smith could pay most but it’s still $200M that the taxpayers have to pay. The MLB wants $1.5M at least.
I think Portland gets the MLB expansion team in the West

  5. How about giving Nebraska something?!?! We have nothing except our godforsaken football team that attracts 140,000 people per game. We most certainly would show up for any pro sports team…

  6. Salt Lake City population is 1,257,936. 1.2 million. Utah has terrible hockey registration.

The smallest US market in the NHL is Buffalo 1,125,637 million. New York has fantastic hockey registration.

You've got to be kidding me. I couldn't hate the United States anymore if I tried. Go play shoot someone, leave hockey to Canadians.

If you are going to go to a small market, go somewhere where they ACTUALLY follow hockey.

Like, all I ever hear about is CANADIAN MARKETS ARE TOO SMALL – meanwhile Gary Bettman wants to relocate to the second smallest US market in the NHL.

Quebec City would do better than Phoenix.

Know how I know? Winnipeg did better than Atlanta. Winnipeg made more money than Atlanta when they relocated in 2010. Winnipeg soldout every home game (41 games a year) from 2010 to 2020. Ten years straight of sellouts.

And Quebec City (839,311) is larger than Winnipeg (834,678).

Quebec City is the LAST major population center in Canada that doesn't have an NHL team…it's a joke.

I would do ANYTHING for Bettman to go away and leave the game to Canadians again.

Stop ruining the sport I LOVE.

  7. The Athletics should relocate to Utah. This makes way more sense than putting an MLB team in Las Vegas.

  8. I just meant he completely overlooked it. Not commenting on the size of the stadium but yeah you’re right.

  9. It really shouldn’t. Basketball is one thing and BYU football, but baseball and the NHL? That is asking a whole lot of one of the smallest markets in pro sports.
Stop trying to expand into places that are 3rd tier markets and stop giving second tier markets 3 or 4 big league franchises it can’t keep for more than a few years. There is reason places like Cincinnati, Buffalo, Kansas City, Milwaukee, St.Louis, New Orleans, and others have only two franchises or less. They’re not big enough to sustain 3 or 4 leagues.

  10. That potential mlb stadium is in SLC. It’s just outside of downtown. The slc airport is super close to downtown

  11. The Utah Brass or NHL Hockey Club. Since the Jazz are a music themed franchise, Ryan Smith might as well have the NHL team music themed as well.

  12. I thought about it, Salt Lake City makes a great two professional sports area. It is too small, too white, too beautiful, and too boring. Contrast Salt Lake City to multicultural Miami and its baseball team.

  13. 0:00 Utah also already has pro hockey (ECHL Grizzlies), pro baseball (AAA Bees), and pro soccer (MLS Real). Rough start to the video.

  14. NHL might relocate the Coyotes to Utah but won’t do an expansion team since Utah is covered by Colorado and Las Vegas. NHL would go to Houston first being the 4th largest US city and top 10 DMA. If NHL expands which they shouldn’t because the already are at 32 teams and talent is watered down. If they do expand in the future they should expand to Houston and Quebec or another team south of Toronto such as Hamilton. Then Utah and Atlanta 3.0 or Kansas City.

  15. Get NHL if you can. Don't bother with MLB. Salt Lake City would be similar to Denver. The high altitude would prevent you from getting pitchers to come, and you'll be a consistent losing team.

  16. First of all, Mullett Arena is NOT a terrible venue. It is in fact a great place to see a hockey game. Better to state accurately that it is simply not suitable for NHL hockey LONG TERM. That is why it is a temporary solution while the Coyotes finalize an arena plan in Arizona. And to the idiot YouTube trolls that are constantly trashing that franchise, they are not moving. So they can stay mad permanently.

When you mentioned renovations and how long any team stays in an arena after that have had that done, remember that the Pistons renovated the Palace of Auburn Hills in 2012 and only benefits from those improvements for 5 years before they moved into Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit. Let's say the Jazz want to get a deal done to have a new arena built within the next 3 to 5 years, it is still going to be longer from the last Delta Center renovation to when the Jazz could be playing in the new venue. I can see it coinciding with the inaugural season of the NHL expansion team.

  17. So he said the Jazz are the only professional sports team in utah, Real salt lake is a thing.

  18. The A's were in Sacramento visiting the minor league stadium the same day as Utah maybe they plan on splitting the games or just comparing the fields.

  19. putting 4 pro teams in SLC would be the most stupid thing ever. There is 2.8M within 75 miles… much of those being Mormon. Compare this to another city trying to get MLB… Raleigh. Raleigh CSA itself is 2.2M, but there is 4.7M within 75 miles… and Raleigh only has 1 team while SLC already has 2

  20. Utah can probably get an NHL team in 5-10 years. Earlier if the coyotes relocate there

  21. Ryan Smith should talk to David Elmore and Donna Tuttle about acquiring the ECHL franchise Utah Grizzlies and bring them to the National Hockey League to be the new NHL team in 2028 or 2030 at a dual NHL/NBA venue arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Grizzlies would be in the Western Conference of the Central Division or Pacific Division of the NHL. If the Utah Grizzlies go to the Central Division their rivals would be the Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets. Utah Grizzles would replace the Arizona Coyotes as a member of the National Hockey League.

  22. At least the Delta Center can be a temporary home until the new arena opens up for the expansion team. I think NHL happens first before MLB expansion. Salt Lake City is at a population of 200,000 so there won’t be as much in terms of reaching out with a fan base but then again, anything is quite possible.

  23. I love how everybody ignores MLS despite it being more popular than the NHL in America nowadays.

Real Salt Lake also calls the state home, even if it is south of the city in the suburb of Sandy.
