CK all right so of course with Dallas in this game there was no Luca donic there was no Kyrie Irving Kyrie’s missed a few games in a row now Luca has played like I don’t know 40 plus minutes a on average throughout the month of January just insane usage talked about that a

Little bit on Wednesday’s show so no Superstars for Dallas and also no Derek Lively no Dante exom no no Derrick Jones Jr I mean that’s five rotation guys they’re two best players and probably like well I mean they’re all rotation guys right and xm’s been really big for

Them with um you know with with Luca and Kyrie in and out of the lineup I think they’ve only missed three total games Dallas has only played three total games this year with neither of them in the lineup but they played a lot of games

With only one of them um and I mean exm has been a big part of them still being competitive and in the playoff race in the Western Conference but without those guys and the wolves are at full strength Mike Conley played for uh he missed four

Out of five games didn’t play on Monday and OKC he was back in the lineup in the starting lineup for Minnesota so um this should have been an easy win for Minnesota it was not easy early the first quarter was sloppy for both teams but it wasn’t sloppy in a in

A typical way it was really weird the Wolves only had one turnover in the first quarter and they only had 10 for the game by the way but only one turnover in the first quarter but they only scored 20 4 Points which is abnormal for this team right we talk

About this all the time they’re the League’s worst in terms of tons and tons of turnovers they’re number one in well number 30 in offensive turnover rate but they’re like top five in effective field goal percentage you know kind of they’ve been kind of between the five and seven

Mark here for the last few weeks when they actually shoot the basketball they make a lot of shots they just turn it over too much well the first quarter was some missed open shots a lot of extra possessions for Dallas actually Dallas had a bunch of of offensive rebounds

Early in this game but Dallas only scored 21 in the first quarter they were missing wide open threes I think Minnesota was maybe two of seven on threes in the first quarter one of six or something like that and Dallas was like one of 10 in the first

Quarter so a lot of bad shooting a lot of uh it was almost like uh the ball was slippery or like there was too much air in the ball like both teams the ball’s just like bouncing around off guys hands offensive rebounds for both teams but

Not really converting just a not a not crisply played first quarter we’ll put it that way so it’s 2 2421 Minnesota after the first and the second quarter things settled down a little bit but actually Midway through the second quarter the temps were losing um and

They were down let’s see I have it here I think they were down one maybe in the second quarter when they went to the three the three Center lineup let’s see it was like at the um ah shoot I lost it is that like the the three um they played like three and

A half minutes together kind of the latter half of the first quarter quar and uh here we go they were down two when the the three Center lineup came into the game they played about three and a half minutes together and when goar left after picking up a couple of

Fouls at the end of the second quarter they were up once they were plus three in about three and a half minutes and it kind of got the Wolves going Dallas is such a small team remember the last time the Wolves played Dallas they lost in Dallas and both Luke and Kyrie played

But the wolves like Dallas was one of the few teams that took advantage of how big the Wolves were and by that I I mean spreading the floor doing what teams did to the Utah you know teams of a couple you know two three four years ago you know beating guys off the

Dribble and the Wolves unable to recover with their size and then offensively you know if Minnesota’s just off then then then you know like Dallas did enough where they scrambled they turned the Wolves over a bunch and then on the other end of the floor the Wolves just allowed straight line drive after

Straight line drive it just a terrible defensive game remember at the time this was what two weeks ago now I said like hey I’m not Ultra worried about this actually like Dallas as a matchup because the wolves do have so many good ISO Defenders they have so many good

Perimeter point of attack Defenders and McDaniels Alexander Walker Edwards Conley these guys aren’t all going to have subpar defensive Knights at the same time very often now only once out of three games did the Wolves actually face both Luca and Kyrie together and of course that’s the one

That they lost I still don’t hate the match up for the Wolves but Dallas used their lack of size against the wolves in a positive way from Dallas’s perspective last time around this time around without Luca and Kyrie it was really only Tim Hardway Jr that the Wolves had

To worry about on that end of the floor and the Wolves did a pretty good job defending him I mean they they had a couple guys make some tough shots in this game I mean Hardaway obviously would be uh number one but um you know

They they had some uh jayen Hardy made a couple tough shots Josh green um I don’t know that he really I feel like he had some easy buckets in this game hit a couple of wide openen threes it was really Hardway and Hardy that that did the damage but even still combined they

Were only 11 of 30 shootings the Wolves did a good job on them it was just you they they hung around because Dallas hung around because they made some tough shots but the Wolves finally dominated the glass against Dallas uh you know who they need to dominate The Glass against

Because they are so small and they did that in this game again early it was a bit of an issue but Dallas finished with only nine offensive rebounds and the Wolves ended up being a plus 14 overall in the glass and it was that kind of that that punishing three or

Four minute stretch in the second quarter where it was like okay Chris Finch finally decided like hey we’ve got a much bigger team than you guys we’re just gonna you know Pound The Rock inside we’re gonna you know uh actually box out this actually to me that flipped

In the third quarter and I’ve talked on the show before like this isn’t a high school basketball like guys aren’t boxing out on every possession they’re using their size and athleticism to just go outwork and out jump people for the ball but the Wolves actually put bodies

On guys espe especially in the third quarter when they started to pull away Nas did a great job with it Kyle Anderson did a great job with it just being physical boxing guys out and allowing teammates to get rebounds cat did a pretty good job with it um and

There weren’t like this wasn’t a Gody numbers game for the Wolves partly because uh like stars didn’t even play in the fourth quarter Minnesota only had actually nobody had double figure rebounds in this game for Minnesota but they were still a plus 14 on the glass and uh again the physicality especially

Kind of breaking through in the third quarter was really really big in this one um I want to focus in on that run that the Wolves went on third to fourth quarter and also Chris Finch did a thing at the start of the fourth quarter that I really never

Uh really mid third quarter is when Minnesota started to get some separation and all told I’m I’m going to like give the Fuller picture and then one of my key takeaways is this lineup thing that I referenced a minute ago but the Wolves were actually they were up uh what was

It 60 let’s see they were up 72 to 67 with just under four minutes left in the third quarter 350 left on the clock they were up by 5 7267 they went on a 49-20 run over the final quarter plus call it uh 15 half

Nearly 16 minutes of this game a 49 to2 run and of course like the last six minutes of that the last half of the fourth quarter were straight garbage time like Subs in for both teams um so the Run was even maybe more impressive before garbage time but overall

49-2 from the 4minute remaining in the third quarter mark on and from that point in the third it was I mean carony towns had a great third quarter he was really good in this game overall we’ll talk more about that here in a minute but cat I mentioned Kyle Anderson those

Guys closed the third quarter really strong he kill Alexander Walker um a was a really had a really quiet game we’ll talk about that too um another single digit scoring out he only attempted five field goals in this game but he was really good at the end of the third quarter just a

Well-rounded um close to the third quarter and because of that close the Wolves went from up five with four minutes left in the third to up 13 points at the end of the third quarter 83 to 70 so up 13 in my mind like what I would have done

If I was Chris Finch is I would have left the starters on the floor I would have just put in basically the starting lineup maybe Alexander Walker instead of Cony you know whatever but basically starters rotation guys and just tried to you know step on them while they’re down

Put him away don’t play around with with this thing you know don’t play with fire don’t don’t put out a lineup that has no stars in it I mean what happened against the Spurs at the end of the fourth quarter on Saturday it wasn’t the same lineup because Conley didn’t play uh but

It was a a punchless lineup no cat no ant the Spurs got life then they got hop from the field and the Wolves ended up losing that game well Finch comes out fourth quarter no no Edwards no cat on the floor Conley was on the floor Gober was

On the floor I believe it was um uh Kyle Anderson and and N Alexander Walker was was the lineup the ball movement was beautiful um I I made a note when it was happening I was like like in the moment I didn’t realize at the start of the fourth

Quarter like I didn’t that neither of these guys are on the floor it’s kind of funny because then like the first or second possession I was like man the ball’s really moving I think it was the second possession because Conley threw the ball out of out of bounds on the

First one or that was the one the Mavs challenged I guess second possession of the fourth quarter the ball’s like whipping around the perimeter guys are driving and kicking um you know they’re they’re uh just like the spacing was Exquisite even with Kyle Anderson on the

Floor I was like what’s going on here and then it clicked with me hey there’s no ant there’s no cat they’re not trying to you know they’re not trying to force anything here they’re not trying to get to a specific spot with a specific play they’re just playing basketball they’re

Playing the way that Chris Finch would like to play which is basically just you know put some bumpers up let’s run some off free- flowing offense let’s get out and transition and it ended up leading to like a weird slow-mo like half hook shot from a few feet out in the middle

Of the paint which like you know that’s what slow-mo does right so like the result worked it wasn’t s that part wasn’t super pretty it never is with slow-mo but like getting to that point was great and then Conley hit a floater the next time down goar got fouled the

Time after that Nas hits a three um I guess he was on the floor too he would have been the fifth guy and so like your offense was gonna have to come from Nas and then some combination of Rudy and Kyle Anderson and they got that and then

Conley hit a three and it was basically over at that point like in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter the wolves real quick went on an 110 run Kat never needed to see the floor again so a couple things there one I think it was

Gutsy I don’t want to say Reckless but inch because obviously it worked but like what if the opposite happens right like what if Dallas pushes back now you got to put those guys back in now you’re battling down this you know down to the final three four minutes before you get

Garbage time but it worked out great that lineup against this Mavs lineup you know obviously Finch didn’t do that against OKC he probably would have done it if Kyrie and Luca were in this game so you know credit Chris Finch for getting those guys some extra rest

Because ultimately both cat and a got to sit the entire fourth quarter and goar and Conley were off the floor by like the six and a half minute Mark or right around six minutes and and then we got to see you know the shake minutes and and Troy

Brown and ultimately then later Luca Garza and uh W Elmore Jr were on the floor too uh but you know credit to Finch for that particular decision when it came to the rotation and for those guys you know the the second line guys for really slamming the

Door I mean it it was Conley and goar plus plus the reserves right and then mlin got into the game as well well and and mofin played really well once again with a bit of an expanded role in this one um so credit to that lineup a great

Ball movement solid defense and Kat an each got to sit the entire fourth quarter um some of my key takeaways from this one I already hit on a couple the um here I’ll throw up the stats if you’re watching on YouTube i’ I’ve got them up on the screen Minnesota shot

Over 56% from the field in this game Dallas was just a shade over 40% they nearly held another team under 40% the pace got away from him a little bit at the end and Dallas only scored 87 I get it no donic no Irving but still I mean

Dallas was stuck below 80 until the final couple minutes when there were some you know cheap fouls and easy buckets that that were allowed Dallas was only six of 29 on three-point attempts in this game that’s 20.7% sub 21% Hardway was two of 10 outside the arc by the way Tim Hardway

Was a minus 32 in this game um didn’t get a whole lot of help so wasn’t it wasn’t necessarily his fault uh by the way the timber was part of their strategy defensively they let Grant Williams just shoot early in the game he ended up 0 for three outside the ark I

Think all three of them were in the first quarter at least two of them were of his attempts it was a little reminiscent of what the Wolves did with Josh giddy like Grant Williams has been a good shooter at times giddy was a better shooter early in the year both of

Them have been in cold streaks lately and the Wolves said hey team’s try to do it to slow-mo well slow-mo is I mean giddy’s a good passer too but slow-mo is a Creator he can do some other stuff Grant Williams isn’t really going to do much else for you offensively sure

Enough he was 0 of three outside the arc one of seven overall from the field in this game that was part of Minnesota strategy was like Hey make this guy shoot open threes instead of let Tim Hardway or Jaden Hardy beat us in this game um turnovers I said on the you know

The preview that I did on Wednesday I said the Wolves needed to have 10 or fewer turnovers they had just 10 turnovers in this game again one in the first quarter um a couple were as they always are because and that’s why you you’re going to have a few cat you know

Just lost his dribble at one point just a few like silly ones but at Rudy threw the ball like third row like just like a weird tried to uh skip pass it to the corner and threw it into the third row just an awful pass that

Slipped out of his hands I mean probably only half of those five or six were like what are you thinking just a bad decision some of those were just they lost the handle right so a really good game from that perspective we talked about the the uh the rebounding

Advantage Plus 14 on the glass and then the free throw Advantage the Wolves ended up with four more free throw attempts but they actually made one less and this is just like a side takeaway here and I I had one of these the other day and I actually maybe I’ll do this

For Friday show go back and look how the wolves are shooting free throws as a team like um like the actual number but anecdotally they’ve struggled a bit lately from the free throw line and you know I I don’t have any real concern about that I think it’s pretty noisy

That stuff can can fluctuate over the course of a season the Wolves had been you know around 10th best in the league in terms of percentage they’re down to 16th now coming into this game they’ll drop because they shot what is that 60% yeah 60% 18 to

30 so um it’s a bit disconcerting now part of that is Rudy’s been getting to the line a bunch lately you know teams are like he’s he’s got a higher percentage of their actual free throw attempts but cat missed two free throws in this game NZ is one of four at the

Line um so it’s something something to keep an eye on to make sure this doesn’t get too contagious is they’re playing some of these closer games um well this wasn’t a close game but you know what I mean the OKC game the other day Etc um last thing just kind of an observation

Before we get to individual STS and Duds um this will actually no we’ll do this we’ll do that next um so my takeaway is we talked about uh free throw shooting we talked about the uh three Center lineup of the second quarter we talked about Chris Finch starting the fourth

With no cat and no ant the Fantastic crisp ball movement in the fourth quarter the exact opposite of what the Wolves did in the first quarter defend defensively yes no Luca no Kyrie still locked down as the Wolves pulled away in the fourth quarter Alexander Walker was phenomenal uh officials again like this

Was whistle happy on both ends in this game Alexander Walker ended up with five fouls and I felt like he had more than that I think like four of them were in the second half there were some Ticky Tac things once again but this is again

Like the style the Wolves play they want to get in your jersey and force the refs to make those calls which is why I worry a little bit about you know are they doing themselves favor any favors I mean the answer is no but by complaining as

Much as they do on that end of the floor def when they’re defending uh because like with the way the Wolves defend you have to expect some Knights officials are going to call things closer remember the game when Zion had a billion free throw attempts and dropped

40 I think back in early December that was one of those nights where like you can’t play physical they’re going to call it the embiid game um you know and there of course there’s certain players like Zion and embiid but but it’s that combination that can kill the Wolves now

In the playoffs they usually let a few more things go which should work to the Wolves Advantage but just just an observation that because of the way the Wolves play because they’re such a good defensive team obviously this calculation has worked out they’re still the number one defense in the league

They actually still do a really good job at not allowing opponent free throws coming into this game they’ve actually dropped a little they were sixth or seventh in the league in opponent free throw rate um now they’re 10th coming into this game of course shakeil just Alexander playing him twice in the last

10 days will send that number in the wrong direction but they’re still top 10 in terms of defensive free throw rate so all that’s positive the calculation working because their defense is so good otherwise but it’s something to keep an eye on here moving forward all right

Much about him earlier the second leading score on the Wolves was Rudy with 17 cat had 29 nobody else on the team had more than 17 and by the way besides Rudy nobody else had more than 12 so the Wolves third leading score had only 12

Points and they dropped 121 as a team every that saw the floor except for Jordan mcclaflin scored in this game and they had I mean everyone that suited Up played it was uh I mean they had what thir 13 guys is that right am i counting

That right yeah 13 guys played in this game for Minnesota um anyway back to cat 29 Points on 11 of 15 shooting it does not get more efficient than 29 Points on 15 shots and he only had five free throw attempts in this game he’s three of five

At the line four of six on threes nine rebounds four assists and a steal in this game he had three turnovers uh but I thought played really well passed the ball very well I think all four of his assists were to Rudy goar he continues

To be the leader in terms of passing to Rudy by the way I should have gotten to this sooner but the big big pick and roll we’re seeing more and more of it between Rudy and Cat there was one in this game uh where I think it was I don’t know if it

Was consecutive plays but Rudy set the screen for cat and rolled to the rim and for whatever reason the Mavs just like Rudy’s gravity they just like went with him and left cat wide open like they forgot who he was of course he drained the three next possession down or two possessions later

In transition that the Mavs lost him and Cat hit a trail three which of course is his favorite shot um but the big big pick and roll with the ability of for cat to pass the way that when he’s going well he’s a very very good passer and

Not just for big just in general is a good passer and obviously when he’s going well or any point in time he’s a fantastic three-point shooter so that continues to be a weapon for the wolves or continues to grow into a more uh consistent weapon for Minnesota another stud Rudy goar he

Controlled this game 17 points on five of nine shooting seven of 12 at the line he only had six rebounds he had a couple of blocks uh that came kind of close together early in this game two turnovers uh really good game for Rudy he only played 20

Minutes by the way and had 17 points on nine shots and got to the line 12 times in this game uh picked up some like off ball fouls actually both both ends of the floor you had consecutive ones where he was called for shoving um who was it

On Dallas like out on the perimeter a couple of different times I think it was ran Holmes and it was uh I don’t know questionable but Rudy of course got upset as Rudy does and um that was that you know had to go take a break after committing those fils besides that like

Rudy was fantastic in this game and it’s just another example of him legitimately controlling a game and it’s so hard to describe like if you dropped into this podcast and you hadn’t watched The Wolves game all year and just knew what the internet says I’m using that term obviously very broadly intentionally

About Rudy goar you’d assume that you know like you wouldn’t understand it and I I I I certainly didn’t fully understand it until Rudy was on the Timberwolves but the way that Rudy goar can legitimately control a game on both ends and gravity is the best word for it

When he rolls you got to roll with him if you’re the defense and if you mix up your coverages Carl th towns Mike Conley Jade mcdel these dudes are all 40% spot up three point shooters they’re going to kill you if if you know and that’s why it’s it’s still mindboggling the Wolves

Offense is only what like 19th an offensive rating but eventually it’s going to continue to climb because they’re going to stop turning it over so much hopefully and they’re the big big stuff and the passing to Rudy it just keeps getting better and Cat you know start of the Year struggling a little

Bit from outside the ark now he’s very comfortable I just I still think this offense has multiple levels that it still can get to this season we saw some glimpses of that in this game so anyway brudy and Cat were both fantastic my third stud in this

Game I’mma go Nas Reed Nas had 12 points eight rebounds in just 26 minutes four of 10 shooting but he was three of five on bre hit a couple of them as the Wolves were trying to pull away I thought he was really good in this game

He always plays well against Dallas um couple assists a steal a block really good game from him um not a stud but Jordan mcclaflin he was 0 of three shooting no points the only Timber rolles player to not score but he had five assists and three steals in just 14

Minutes um and I know he played garbage time but I think all of those steals were before garbage time he also had three rebounds in four minutes excuse me 14 minutes um so a good JM game I don’t have any Duds U JM the the only one that

Didn’t score uh everybody in garbage time played well garik made three buckets of course Troy Brown hit a couple of tough shots slowmo was good and limited usage in this game limited minutes uh ac across the board the Wolves played extremely well I don’t have any Duds from this one all right last

Observation this was this is just kind of like I I thought about this as I was prepping for the Pod it felt like this was the first blowout win in a couple of weeks and it was I mean what the Portland game January 12 which is nearly

Three weeks ago now it’ll be three weeks tomorrow from the Portland game since then they had the close win over the Clippers the two close win over the Pistons the Memphis win that ended up being a 15-point win but remember that was close until the fourth quarter before they pulled away against the

Grizzlies the loss to OKC the lost to Charlotte uh a two- close win over Washington a two-point win over Brooklyn the one-point loss to the Spurs and then the Thunder game Monday this was the first laugher they’ve had and this game even was I mean was 13 points go to the

Fourth so it wasn’t like a blowout blowout but like Portland on the 12th go back to Orlando a couple of games before that Houston a couple before that so there had been a string where there had been some blowouts mixed in this is the first one we’ve had in a while it’s also

Only the second time the timber rols have held a team under 100 points since then um or since that Portland game and the only other one was that 9694 bar burner of a win over the Brooklyn Nets uh last week so good to see the wolves get a relatively easy win

Orlando held on in a close game against the Spurs on Wednesday so they’ll have Orlando coming to town on Friday night another opportunity for a win a you know they should be probably not double digit favorites but you know six seven eight point favorites in that game Houston’s
