Steven Adams TRADED to the Rockets for Victor Oladipo π Bobby Marks on the ‘financial deal’
A happy Thursday night uh hopefully everyone is doing great I figured we would do a um not too long um Memphis Houston trade that broke around 8 o’ sorry for the delay I was at a JV basketball hoops game watching my son play and U just got home and I’m dealing
With a head cold so um I know there’s a bunch of good games on so let’s try to bang this out real quick I mean this is really a financial financially driven trade um certainly by memphis’s side when you can pick up three um three uh
Second round picks and get rid of the Steven Adams money that’s um that’s owed 12.6 this year and 12.6 million next year uh guaranteed for this year and next Adams was out with that injury um Victor Olo now comes in um Olo has been out for this year um he will likely
Become a roster casualty in Memphis unless they flip him um again so let’s kind of go through the particulars and why and we actually wrote about in our in the trade guides that we’re updating right now Memphis was was teetering up against that second apron next uh next
Off season when you look at where they were with um with salary um they are right around $186 million in salary the second apron was at $190 million when you add in their first round pick which was likely going to be in the lottery they go into to the second apron
Certainly can jump back below with that $14.7 million Luke Canard um Team option here but if you’re looking at it from from memphis’s perspective they were pressed up against that second apron they were one of 10 teams that were going to be there um that’s nowhere
That’s that’s not where teams want to be teams do not want to be in the second apron here so you take that Adam’s number off and you wind up getting three seconds and the three seconds um you’re looking at either a three seconds are going to be either a 2024 Oklahoma
City second a 2024 Oklahoma uh Golden State second or a Brooklyn second so two out of those three and then you’re looking at a um a 2025 Oklahoma City second um that’s going to go to Memphis so you basically get three seconds for Houston to take back that Steven Adams
Contract basically that is a play for next year BAS on Adam’s being out for the year so when you look at it from a from a cap perspective here when you had the um you had the johnar um um non um dis non you had the johnar disabled the player exception that was
Created with his injury um Oladipo comes into into that right that in the mount and Adams goes out and what that does is that creates a brand new $12.6 million trade exception here okay so the exception that the disabled player exception that was going to expire in early um early March I’m
Watching the Knicks Pacers game was going to expire on March 11th you’re allowed to acquire a player in the last year of his contract Olo was making um 9.45 he comes into that exception Adams goes out at 126 that creates a new trade exception that um that Memphis is going to have
Available for a full year um the Grizzlies right now are certainly well positioned cap wise um $152 million uh in uh the 152.5 that counts towards tax or 12.5 they’re fine nixer man nixer rolling I know we’re doing a um the Memphis Houston video goodness gracious um as for next
Year okay this is next year now $73.49 in salary the luxury tax is 1714 you over the tax right now the first apron is 178.6 the second apron is 189.5 uh 173 you add another pick you going to be in the second apron that’s why let’s keep an eye on what happens
Maybe with Luke Canard when we get closer to the February 8th deadline or maybe when we get into the off season he’s got a $14.7 million team option for next year okay so for Memphis 3 seconds right we’ll wait till we get to the trade memo here but you look at what um
This is what um pulling up the Rockets uh draft piic so H Houston had they had a Brooklyn second I wouldn’t move that between 31 and 54 they had a a golden state second between 31 and 55 and an Oklahoma City 2 so two of those are
Going out and then they had an Oklahoma City 2 in 2025 that is going to um that is going to um Memphis here so you get uh cap relief or or apron relief next year and then you get three seconds back for um for Stephen Adams here now from
Houston’s perspective right we always we wrote about it in the trade guide why did they hold on to ol Depot here’s a reason why that were able to kind of flip his contract and you this is a play for next year this is a play We we’d
Heard about maybe Robert Williams who is also injured and out for the year but this is a play for next year where you get some backup you get some um veteran backup to alperon sangun um this is not for this year okay so this is a play for
Next year where you’re getting Adams on an um who have one year left at $12.6 million takes away some flexibility if you’re going to go some do some free agent shopping here here for salary-wise you are at let me pull them up here for you Rockets fans um you have
121.71a Jon Tate Jeff Green um so you have certainly uh you have the flexibility to either keep those players you’re still in good shape to go out and use your non- Taxman level exception because you’ve got 140 um $146 million in salary so it cost you 3 seconds to
Get a player that you weren’t be able to you you weren’t going to be able to sign a backup center at at when healthy at Stephen Adams level here so it’s basically this is kind of one of these wait until next year for Houston apron relief for Memphis right
Now so I totally um totally make sense here so for for the Rockets what I would kind of focus in on right now okay we had to do we had to adjust their trade guide um is the the Tate and and um and Jac landal contract when you
Look at it um both players um Tate has a $7 million player option Lando has an $8 million non- guaranteed is there something out there that makes sense with both those players you can take back a $22.5 million player because of the new trade rules basically 15 going um you know uh
14 15 going out you know you know 2122 coming back here so keep an eye on that Houston can’t trade their own first until 28 but they’ve got that Brooklyn 24 and 26 unprotected and then along with swaps in 25 and 27 so8 minute video kind of giving you the kind of the
Logistics as far as why Memphis did the deal it’s all about the second apron next year they they created a 12.6 million trade exception to get three seconds and why Houston did a deal more for for next year keep an eye on them at the deadline here still have that um
That landelle and that Tate contracts that maybe you can move around Here
