Displaced definitely sounds better than a tear.

Reddit doctors tell us what this means

  2. SkyGh0st

All of this seems like it could be worse than they are making it sound, but they don’t want to rule him out for a lengthy period quite yet.

Shams is on fraud watch, afraid to say how much time he’ll miss

  4. realudonishaslem

Ok r/NBA doctors, how long is this gon take

  5. iamMaus_fr0m_Jupiter

He’s the only guy this has ever happened to

  6. TheScaleTipper

So it’s a tear, this is just a fancy way of saying it

  7. jorgelongo2

imma need reddit doctors to tell me wtf that is

Well, this season is over for the Sixers. Should just let Embiid recover and shut him down for the season. It was going to be tough anyway with New York powering up, and Boston amd Milwaukee looking strong. Just focus on getting a third guy in the off season and focus on next season. That was the plan anyway, when harden got traded.

With Embiid gone, Maxey can probably make an All NBA push.

Not a doctor but very familiar with knee injuries as a former victim of quite a few. Here are the timelines for the 3 possible solutions.

If they opt to repair the tear, stitching it back together, it’s a 3-6 month recovery time. Pros are this is probably the best long term solution for a torn meniscus, cons is he is done for fantasy season and maybe even regular season.

If they opt to remove the area of the meniscus where the tear is located altogether(picture having an apple with a speck of mold, and scooping out the area with mold on it) it’s 3-6 weeks. Pros are this is the quickest solution but cons are this can have more negative long term implications such as arthritis.

If they opt to rest and rehabilitate, it’s 6-8 weeks. Pros are an intermediate recovery time and no major intrusive surgery work such as removing the meniscus, cons are it might not heal or improve and he might ultimately need surgery anyways. This is also only an option if the tear is in an area that will heal (meniscuses have areas that receive blood flow and areas that don’t). If it’s in an area that doesn’t he’s definitely needing surgery or else the flap will continue to get stuck in the joint, causing it to lock and swell.

Former doctor here. This isn’t good. You’re looking at a lonzo recovery time.

    >This is a terrible way to describe the injury to the public and doesn’t help to clarify anything.

    > 1. A displaced flap is a tear. Not an ‘injury’. The meniscus is torn

    >2. If you tell a sports doc someone has a ‘displaced flap’, those are words we often use to describe something that needs surgery

    >3. If rest/rehab is still an option then they really aren’t communicating this in a good way

    > 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

As a Sixers fan, NBA should intervene on the Sixers being shady as fuck

    >The displaced flap of the meniscus can get lodged in the knee joint causing it to lock.

Reading the article (the portion it allows me to read without a subscription) it appears they are weighing rest/rehab vs a full repair and that a trim is not being considered at this time

Surgical repair is a 4-6 month rehab (though Jalen Ramsey just knocked a few months off of that timeline) and would likely end the season.

Rest/rehab does work just fine in many cases but it is truly case by case.

I would think they would at least trial rehab first for a few weeks, it’s it’s going well stick with that, if it’s not, than do surgery.

I read MRIs. Displaced tear is worse because it means the torn area is flipped or located away from its original position and can cause abnormal stress on another region of the knee joint space. Here’s an analogy. Imagine you chipped a tooth. Tooth gets trapped between two other normal teeth elsewhere in your mouth. Over time and use you’ll chip away at those teeth from getting jammed all the time by the chipped tooth.

  15. drewtheblueduck

I really don’t like the word “flap” in this context

  16. bucknola

Don’t understand why they’re doing everything in their power to not call it a tear

  17. eternali17

Could be worse. Could be his butthole flaps

  18. Anim8nFool

Don’t do the procedure — they killed Brandon Roy’s career.

  19. Key-Ad1311

Something about his vagina, that’s all I understood

  20. Will_Explode8

You happy you fucks here on r/nba? Dude got injured because the media and fans were fucking heckling him for actually trying to follow the procedures for dealing with an injury

  21. retroracer33

he’ had a good run dealing with mostly little stuff, but I think everyone knew this was coming eventually. just hope he can bounce back and this isnt gonna hinder him too mch int he future.

  22. Domermac

Gunna need a procedure eventually. Probably smarter just to do it now
