76ers Star Joel Embiid To Undergo Surgery, To Miss EXTENDED TIME I CBS Sports

76ers Star Joel Embiid To Undergo Surgery, To Miss EXTENDED TIME I CBS Sports

We’ve got breaking news out of the NBA where 76ers star Joel embiid is set to undergo a procedure on his left knee the procedure will reportedly repair a torn left meniscus which em beats suffered during Tuesday’s loss to the Warriors there is currently no timetable for the reigning MVP’s return but he’s expected

To miss an extended period of time as a result of the surgery embiid will not play a minimum of 65 games this season rendering him ineligible for postseason Awards and all NBA teams we welcome in CBS Sports NBA Insider Bill Ryder on the heels of the news surrounding embiid’s injury and

Bill I just want to start with the overarching topic what was your initial reaction to the news because we saw the fall on the knee during that game against the Warriors we knew surgery was on the table but is this how you expected things to go considering the nature of this

Injury yeah I I think Keana this was the expectation unfortunately once we got news that there was some sort of miniscus injury tear whatever it is the team is being very strange about communicating exactly what’s going on but it seemed like a procedure is what they’re calling it a surgery is almost

Certainly more likely what we’re facing this this was going to be the outcome and to answer your question my initial reaction is there potentially maybe even probably goes one of the great Seasons we’ve seen individually in NBA history I I don’t think it’s exaggeration just say that embiid had been doing was

Extraordinary and with his absence for however long it’s going to be and there is a sense within the team that it’s going to be a while however long it’s going to be rest of the season or a big chunk of the Season it certainly endangers a Sixers team that I think had

A real chance past T to be a real Contender I want to jump into that for just a moment but I want to go back to what you said just looking at what embiid was able to do this season I mean we it’s been a spectacular season for

Him but now he’s not making that cut off for that 65 game threshold what’s your thoughts on the do you still feel like it’s an adequate rule cuz considering the the Monumental efforts we have seen especially as of late where do you lean with how this rule kind of dictates what

He’s possibly aborted for yeah I’m a contrarian here a couple things I I think the rule is fine look I had mbid played 65 games and been the MVP it would have been the third fewest games played in the history of the war award now I’m a voter so if they want to

Go back to just letting us decide we can certainly weigh that up I I actually K don’t think Joel play this game because he want to be the MVP you look at the number of games he had left left left to miss that that Mark he wasn’t going to

Get there they were going to rest him I think he played because they lost a few games because it was an NBA game on National Television because they’re trying to keep Pace with uh the teams at the top of the Eastern Conference I I take MB Den’s word when he said he

Wasn’t chased in an MVP he was chasing an NBA championship and again I I don’t think he was going to play every game but five of them had he play that game so I’m okay with the the rule itself but it is certainly putting under a Stark

Light given the fact there are people who believe he played for that reason and it just reminds us that load management or whatever you want to call it you have to use it in balance with trying to stay healthy because ID’s a guy that has had a history of not being

Able to stay on the court he played maybe when he shouldn’t have I mean he was limping out there also a freak injury with Kingo falling on his leg and now we’re discussing when he’s going to be back if he’s going to be back in what

It means not just for his season but for the Sixers season okay well looking at kind of the big picture in beats career I mean I know I’ve talked to some people in who played in the NBA and they told me about similar injuries that they have suffered and that long-term effect but

How concerned do you think the Sixers are with mid’s long-term Health well I I think right now they’re focused really on the short-term in my my conversations with them but the good news is I don’t know if it’s good news I mean he has had injuries before and he

Has a a a history of of serious injuries and I I guess on the flip side of that or if you want to be a glass half full kind of person he has returned from those injuries he’s had remarkable Seasons he won the MVP last year as we’ve discussed he had an incredible

Season last year remember this is a guy when he came out of Kansas fell all the way to number three should have been the top pick in the draft because people were worried whether he’d ever be healthy so I think if the procedure goes well if the surgery goes well if it’s

Successful despite his age I’m sure there’s some optimism that he’ll be able to get back out on the floor and be successful it just I think reinforces the concerns we’ve always had which is his inability to stay healthy over the course of a long and grueling NBA season

Well you said that you didn’t really see embiid being able to kind of hit that 65 game Threshold at where he was as we said in the beginning of February but now looking at the MVP race now nicolea yage is now the heavy favorite what’s your thoughts on who might be the MVP

Front runner or what might transpire over the next couple of months yeah yic is it would be the person if I were putting money down that I that I would bet on I mean this is a guy who’s obiously world class I I think shil just alander somebody to to maybe not quite

Cross off your list depends how the Thunder play down the stretch and where they finish and I’ll say this too I mean I I know it was a little bit a little bit further ago but last year in December now I know we’re we’re in the early part of February but in December

Embiid was something like 15 to one or 18 to1 the folks have kind of written them off so teams can make surges and narratives can change are the Knicks going to win the Eastern Conference probably not but if they do keep an eye on Jaylen Brunson are the Bucks going to

Figure it out and go on an incredible tear at the end of the season maybe look like the best in the NBA maybe not but if they do keep an eye on jiannis so I still think this award’s very much in play but right now front runner the most

Likely candidate as you said is Nick leic in Denver all right well one last thing bill just looking at where the Sixers sit right now they entered Sunday sitting fifth in the East how do they stay afloat without embiid for the foreseeable future and I’m talking whether that’s what they have on the

Roster now we look ahead trade deadline literally a few days away what are your thoughts on what the 76ers can do or if you think they’re sustainable to be able to be without embiid for who knows how long at this point yeah let’s say that it’s an extended period of time that

That you don’t have Joel embiid whatever that looks like I I think the answer Keana is that is that Tyrese Maxi has to be the star of this team and by the way he’s put up some numbers in the games and even recent last few days that that

Embi has been out that’s number one Nick nurse obviously not the head coach with with Philadelphia they’re going to have to play extraordinary defense to make up for what’s going to be a lack of offensive Excellence without Joel embiid and I also know that embiid’s a defensive machine the the real answer is

There’s no easy answer you take Giannis off the Bucks you take joic off the Nuggets you take LeBron or r d off the Lakers Lakers aren’t even good right now you take you dig jic off of that MCH team you dig any of the top 10 15

Players in the game the best players on any team off of that team and they’re not going to be as good so maybe there’s a Band-Aid you reference the trade deadline that the Sixers decide to to go out and and add for their for their front Court somebody with some size but

The reality is there’s nothing they can get there’s no other Jo lmbi they’re going to have to trudge along and they really I think the answer is you try to be as good as you can be you built up a little bit of a safety net in terms of

Falling out of the playoffs at least you try to get into the playoffs you try to avoid the play and you try to play as well as you can and you hope and we’re waiting on this news that embiid’s return is at some point in the

Postseason and when if it’s an if he comes back you can reclaim the form that he had before he got this injury like you said there is no Band-Aid to be able to replace a talent like Joel andb but the Sixers certainly going to try to

Continue to kind of dominate the east in some way form or fashion trade deadline for Set for February 8th so coming up soon so we’ll be on standby to see what the Sixers do in the meantime Bill Ryder I appreciate the Insight thank you so much and taking a look at the Sixers

With and without embiid in the lineup to season well it’s pretty St changes right here when you’re looking at their win and loss record 26 and 8 with him in the lineup without 4 and 10 averaging over 121 points per game down to 113 just

Over 113 A5 when he’s not in the lineup the field goal percentage taking a slight dip to 45% from 49 and 3point percentage 38 going down to 34 but nonetheless we’ve seen some outrageous performances from Joel indeed it’s going to be tough for the 76ers to be able to

Bounce back with such a talent like that on the roster but as of now out for the foreseeable future with that surgery it’ll be interesting to watch as we will be following along to see how they recoup with in beid on the Sideline

  1. Sixers need to punt on this season and SELL, SELL, SELL. Get a protected 1st for Tobi and Melton. A second for Batum. Let’s grab assets for 2024/25 with our 50Mil of cap space. These assets and space can be used to make a trade in the off-season with teams who are in cap hell because of the New CBA. Teams will be trying to purge salaries to get under the apron.

  2. He'll probably be out the rest of the season. Even if the rule wasn't there, you can't give someone an MVP if they miss half the season. Embiid is Bill Walton. He's Yao Ming. He simply will not be able to stay healthy. He'll probably only have 1-3 years of dominant play left before the injuries and surgeries pile up. This is exactly what happen with star crossed players like Walton and Ming. It's a shame. He's one of the most skilled offensive players we've ever seen. He's one of the all-time great bigs when healthy, but, unfortunately, being healthy is as important as the other things.

  3. This is the best thing for him and his health! Sixers do better to rebuild this team and get b8gger and quality players!
