Shams Charania just said this on “[Run It Back](https://x.com/runitbackfdtv?s=21)” on FanDuel TV. I’ll upload the clip once it’s uploaded to their Twitter.
He said that Joel Embiid and his camp have decided to undergo surgery for his torn meniscus. The hopeful expectation is that Joel Embiid will miss a minimum of 1-2 months, but it could be longer depending on how the surgery goes. Embiid will no longer be eligible to win MVP if he returns from the surgery this season.

“No longer eligible to win MVP” – bro like if that was ever even in doubt or consideration.
Playoffs in 11 weeks. Not crazy to think he’s back right?
They aren’t taking into account ramping up right?
Just in time for the playoffs. Maybe even will have some regular season games to ramp up. Sixers just gotta avoid the play in during his absence
Everyone’s freaking out like the season’s over and I honestly don’t quite get it? I’m not a doctor obviously but I’ve been reading up on the procedure and it feels fairly straightforward with a clear timeline.
This is a way better move than the “rest and see how he feels” approach, and a full repair is way dicier than people assume (despite it sounding like the more responsible option).
We’ll know how the team feels about his likelihood to come back based on how they handle the deadline, but to me it shouldn’t change too much (other than emphasizing the need for another offensive creator).
We’ll drop in the standings for sure, but it shouldn’t matter that much. We gotta go through the same teams to win a championship.
The playoffs start in about 11 weeks. If the likely timeline for return is 6-8 weeks, I’m not seeing a huge conflict unless we’re assuming complications.
Heal up big fella and don’t rush it
Best case is he returns by early April and has 5-6 games to get back into shape before the playoffs start.
Man is still my MVP. What a season!
from whats been posted, if the surgery is to remove the flap in the meniscus, he’ll need 4-6 weeks to actually heal, and then he’ll probably need 2 weeks to ramp back up physically and get back into shape to play.
so 2 months. regular season ends april 14th. unless he has a setback or something goes wrong, he should be ready to play when the playoffs start. it would be foolish to not try to improve the team, especially if the players you are acquiring will be players you want to bring back next season around embiid.

He is the best player in the league and anyone with eyes and integrity knows that.
He will be back for playoffs and hopefully the most cinematic climax to the process.
In the meantime the boys can hold it together, this is the opportunity for Reed to develop, Maxey to take the next step, and maybe a new star to emerge.
I am just happy they are taking definitive action on it instead of going with the “wait-and-see” approach.
Get as healthy as possible and don’t rush back. If he gets back for the playoffs, great!.. If not, lets see what Morey’s plan is in the offseason and come out next season healthy and hungry.
Even if he comes back mid first round we should be able to squeak through unless we get matched with a bad matchup (which tbh could be likely).
Not getting my hopes up lol
please don’t rush shit back.
If I was running a 2K franchise, I would hold him out for the rest of the season unless there’s optimism he can fully heal and be in game for the playoffs.
sell off Melton and Harris. get some draft capital. and go all in for next season.
I think part of the problem is we rely on Embiid too much during the regular season where if he had another running mate, who could score off the dribble or just surround him with a bunch of three-point assassins, then it might be a little bit different.
either way, I’m still holding out hope and I wish him the best
What’s the expected time out? I don’t think we should get our hopes up. If he is back for the playoffs there’s a high chance he’ll not be 100% / rusty.
TAKE YOUR TIME. Even coming back at 9-10 weeks is fine. If it comes to Joel missing the play in, and we play Boston round 1 (it would be peak hilarity we get a well rested Joel beating the best Celtics team in a decade)
Bro this is a six month recovery stop the cap
