He is having a hell of a season but Dame sacrifices way too much for Giannis to play the way he wants. As great as Giannis is, he doesn’t have to get 30 a game to be effective. Dame on the other hand is most effective when he’s scoring and he gets it going.
Dame last year was averaging 35 a game after New Year’s Eve. He was averaging just under 22 shots a game and over 11 3s. He is a high volume high-effect player. Last 5 games, he is averaging under 16 shots a game. Devin Booker, and Tyrese Maxey, who are also number 2 options, are still averaging nearly 20 shots a game. Paul George as the 3rd option ball handler is attempting more than 17 shots a game. Giannis is literally only averaging one less shot per game than last year, and he is attempting one less 3 per game than last year so he is taking the same number of shots inside the 3-point line as last year.
Efficiency is out of this world but Dame wasn’t brought to be a playmaker. That pick-and-roll action is supposed to be lethal because Dame can shoot from anywhere the same way it is between Jamal and Jokic. And the potential of that pick-and-roll action is miles ahead of what it is with Jokic and Jamal because of Dame’s range.
Not saying Dame should take more shots than Giannis but he should be close to that 19-20 shot range every game which isn’t a blowout you gotta make sure he takes 7-8 3s a game at least and if he catches fire, you should aim to have him take between 12-15. Limiting him to a playmaker this much is disgusting to see. The stats literally say Dame averaging more than 25 gives the team the best chance to win. They’re 23-3 when Dame scores over 25, 88.46% win percentage with a very decent sample size. This is the most lethal offensive player on this team and a great game by Dame is far more effective than a great game by Giannis because Dame does it from the perimeter which makes you count by 3s, not 2s. He is far more effective in leading comebacks offensively and also having shooting stretches in the game where a single-digit lead turns into a blowout in a matter of 2-3 minutes.
Great season and Giannis should be 2nd in the MVP race right now but he has to sacrifice a little of his game for this team to reach its offensive peak.
