NBA Trade Deadline Instant Reaction | Why did the Raptors trade for Kelly Olynyk?
Remember when we were talking about uh fonio going to the Pistons we said that might open up the some room that might uh clear the runway for abaji on the Jazz well so much for that because uh right before we went to break wo tweeting that the Jazz are finalizing a
Trade to send Kelly Ock and oaj to the Raptors for kir Lewis auto porter and a 2024 first round pick yeah we got the Jazz and Raptors making a deal here Trader Danny’s doing things today and that first round pick we are learning will be the least favorable of the
Thunder Clippers Rockets jazz in 24 that’s the one the least favorable of those four teams Clippers right now I guess Clippers and Thunder yeah right there neck and neck so round late first round let’s call it that um we got another Canadian playing for Toronto how
Do you feel Kelly Captain Canada I feel like they might move him immediately I think there are a lot of teams that are looking for Center that can shoot the three ball that are actually contending for a championship he would fit on the Lakers as a backup so that’s possible
Otherwise there’s a Canadian oai iagi it felt like yeah there might be a little bit of a runway in Utah well he got on the runway and he’s going to Toronto they cleared the yeah come on up he is the guy who got traded for Donovan Mitchell as a as
A draft pick just last year this his second year in the league he is nearing 24 years of age and he hasn’t hasn’t been incredible in Utah actually Will Hardy has kind of put him at the back of the rotation he’s obviously a ridiculously athletic guy uh but that is
What the RS are giving up a late first-rounder for no disrespect to Kelly o lenck who can who can do things but that’s who they’re trading for I guess to see to see the relationship you think this is more about aaji yeah I think so
I don’t think he has a huge future in the league he’s very handsome though one of the most handsome guys in the league if you ask me uh I feel like this is just a get a Lin play yeah I guess and I don’t think they’ll ship him because I
Don’t think so either if there was a like a better first round pick that’s available wouldn’t Utah just do that trade I don’t know why I honestly don’t know why the Raptors are doing this I don’t think they should be trading a pick right now Kelly olick he’s been
Around uh he’s going to be 33 soon the Reps ain’t winning anything immediately I mean he’s nice to have on the on the bench but he’s getting a little bit older he’s got to go help a really good team it’s just kind of confusing from
The WAP side he’s I I assume asai is thinking oai baji we can try him out I’m guessing I’m guessing and the the Kyo Lewis Ron that was quick that was that was very quick yeah that that hasn’t worked out for Kyo Lewis another ridiculously athletic guy
For New Orleans for years but late first rounder has not I mean he wasn’t that late at all what was he 15 14 yeah somewhere uh yeah he hasn’t worked out for for any team yeah uh alen is an expiring deal he making 12.1 million this year but that’s uh you know
Obviously coming uh off the books uh at the end of the year he’s at the end of the year he’s been playing really well and that’s why his name had been linked to all these like good teams the Raptors are not but uh as a possible sort of Guy
Where you could maybe convince yourself oh yeah he could be a Difference Maker in a in a potential uh playoff series but yeah right now going to the Raptors this one is surprising very surprising yeah what what’s Messiah going to do next we going to get Andrew Wiggins we
Going to go make an aggressive move for Brooks we just literally going let’s get Team Canada up there in Toronto this is wild with RJ Barrett and and Kelly it is wild he’s got to be on the horn with Rob Pena saying Lakers take him he’ll help
Anthony Davis he’ll give him Ram within the three-point line because this guy can hit the center spot he can help a championship team that’s for the Reps yeah so you really think that Messi here is making this move because he could he sees maybe a better like return
For o linic here immediately that makes the most sense to me I guess from a size perspective our team’s going to be good Kelly ol’s going to help that’s that’s uh debatable at this point it ain’t going to be for this year he’s going to help but yeah what is it
Doesn’t move the needle they ain’t making the play in tournament this year so you can help a team not making a play in tournament unfortunately yeah yeah and then the pick yeah which is surprising again it’s a first round pick at the end but still I know it’s a
Crappy draft but that’s uh that’s capital that most of these teams want strange this this is a weird move a weird a pretty weird move I mean the Raptors need three-point shooting and that’s what a Lin brings and that’s if you’re if you squint and you look through rose-colored glasses that’s what
Aaji brings as well I suppose though he’s shooting 33% this year and 35 last year he’s supposed to be a shooter yeah yeah this doesn’t make sense for the Raptors to be yeah they’re they’re maybe maybe you’re right Tas that oaji is actually the play here that they see
Something that you know he’s stagnated here in his second year in Utah he’s been buried of course got a lot of talent there and that that they think there’s a little bit of diamond in the rough there that’s maybe maybe um hopefully I guess as a RT otherwise it’s
Perplexing um any other deals that we need to uh address here any other Canadians headed home no okay a lot of Canadians yeah this is got to be the most Canadians ever to play for this team we got three of them right now yeah bu is still there he might be traded
Should be traded today maybe they got to keep the quota up can con yeah a lot of people don’t know this the Raptors actually have to have one or two Canadians on The rosters at all time

Absolutely brutal from Rpas perspective. Im kind of done with this front office.
Just checked and noted that Agbaji's father is Nigerian, very kool and good on you Masai.
Maybe Masai just wants to put a better quality product on the floor considering how much tickets cost to attend a game in Toronto. Look at how many tight games the raptors have been involved in during the first half of the season.
Will not be surprised to see Coach Adrian Griffin returning as well, who knows.
pretty critical analysis, Agbaji was supposed to be a 3 and D guy and still has two years left on a cheap contract, he's no more of a wild card than what could be coming in at 29th in a weak draft. Optimistically, Raptors are getting a guy who could be a role player, plays D (all of a sudden they need D), and has a history of being a solid threat from 3. Olynyk, well he's one of a few vets who will be pumped to play in Canada, shoots, passes, sort of a poor mans Gasol at this stage. He might be willing to resign at maybe $5-$6 million and provide bench leadership to a young team as none of the current vets will be back. Also strong chance Boucher and Brown get moved in the next couple of hours…..
This helps San Antonio they now have 7th or 8th pick
We have needed another big for a while, especially with Koloko's unfortunate health issue causing us to lose him. When Poeltl was injured recently the team was really vulnerable, and with Kelly Olynyk they don't get "just" a back-up but a skilled 7ft rotation player who is, moreover, a good floor-space and passer. Having him and Poeltl will be fantastic for shoring up the Raptors' ability to play big while adding a bit of offence from Olynnyk. Imagine also upon occasion when Olynyk and Poeltl play together (!), giving the team a way to dominate around the basket when they need to. We haven't had two quality centres since Ibaka-Gasol.
Olynyk is respected as a high-character player who will likely re-sign to play in Canada for, I presume, a 2 (maybe 3?) year team-friendly contract.
Agbaji is also the right age and might have the talent to develop alongside the young core. The Raptors currently need talent and if he does have the talent he is presumed to have then let the Raptors development-oriented coach and system have a crack to make Agbaji a solid NBA rotation player.
Giving up one of our "superfluous" 1st-round picks for 2024 is not a bad thing, not just because the draft class isn't supposed to be that deep, but how practically in any case could the Raptors develop 3 first-rounders plus the first 2nd rounder – Detroit's – simultaneously next year anyway? There would have been a log-jam for minutes, frustrations, etc.
Love this trade for the Raptors as it increases the team's floor at centre where we have been too thin and doesn't cost us much in relevant value, and while also adding hometown character of Olynyk, the ability to play really big, as well as the potential "undeveloped talent upside" of Agabji.
The raptors must a CANADIANS ON THEIR TEAM, I didn't know they had a quota.
Kelly Olynyk is the kind of player who can help a team in more ways than just winning right now. He plays the right way with strong fundamentals that the young players on the Raptors and coming into the league can learn from that. Boxing out, making smart passes which don't lead to turnovers, and setting good screens is what he does best and is what the Raptors are weakest at. He will help create a culture of good habits.
And you have to realize that Otto Porter Jr is not a positive asset. He's been injured for most of his time here and is very rusty. To make the number of contracts and salary work without including other players they are shopping like Boucher, Brown, and maybe Trent Jr they had to include him and sweeten the deal with a better draft pick.
They're making a play for shai during an Olympic year. These are his good friends
terrible analysis. We already have 3-4 picks in this draft that's a weak draft. We were never going to add that many rookies onto our roster. To use a pick to get a better player than who we would've drafted that also cheap is just good business. Also getting KO, resigning him and flipping for more assets in the future, surprised these guys can't figure such basics out.
I’ve warmed to it, regardless if they trade or keep and try to resign Kelly.
Masai deserves some room to move
Expiring contract is all that needs to be said. Masai playing chess here not checkers. Lots of freed up room
bobby has no idea what he's doing. usually when the gm fumbles the bag like this, he gets fired.
The Raptor and Jazz trade make a lot of sense for Raptors. Raptors receive two good player will be on rotation than one hardly seen on court and another never played. Also, Raptors may keep 2024 1st round pick, and it's okay to trade the worst 1st round pick.
Jazz are dumb asf
You guys are salty cus Kelly didn't land in LA or Boston. lol….Masai is fleecing the NBA.
Overreaction
Sorry guys, your analysis needs some analyzing…
Kelly Olynick brings veteran presence and a dependable big off the bench. He’s a great passer as well as an outside shooter. He sets good screens and he has a high IQ. Smart big men that know the game, they make the right plays and provide great leadership on the floor. He’s play great this year and I’m sure he’ll be happy to play in Canada. Olynick and Barret have a successful history together. A late first round pick in the draft this year is not a huge asset.
As a Raptors fan and Toronto native, I'm happy with the trade. Glad to have Kelly in Canada and hopefully we can develop Ochai into a reliable rotational piece.
How do you know Raptors won’t make the play in..? You got a crystal ball? They’re 4 games back of a play in spot with 30 games left. 🤡
KO is a great pick up … a cheap contract big who can stretch the floor …exactly what we needed for our bench …sign him to a 2 year 22 million dollar contract
Cory Joseph got waived… We're looking for Canadians + a backup PG?
